~ Arete to the generation 2 cast. |
Arete is a major character in the 2015 tactical role-playing video game Fire Emblem Fates. She is the major antagonist of the Revelation route.
She is the mother and nemesis of Azura, one of the two main characters, and the aunt of Corrin, the other main character. She is also the wife of Garon, and by extension the step-mother of Xander, Camilla, Leo and Elise.
She used to be the benevolent queen of Valla and later Nohr before she was killed by Anankos and turned into his minion. She now blindly follows the usurper's orders and fights his foes, including her own family.
She is voiced by Yuka Keicho in the Japanese version. In the English version, she is voiced by Kris Zimmerman in Fates and Sara Cravens (who also voices Frost in Mortal Kombat: 11) in Heroes.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Arete was the queen of Valla and the older sister of Mikoto. One day, the insane half of Anankos, Mikoto's lover and Valla's god, attacked the country and killed Arete's husband. She and her daughter Azura were forced to escape from Valla and arrived in Nohr, where Arete married its king Garon after he fell in love with her singing voice.
However, Garon's servants disliked how Arete was replacing Katerina (the king's late previous wife) and mistreated both Arete and Azura. Despite knowing that Anankos made a curse that would kill anyone who would talk about Valla outside of its borders, Arete decided to warn Azura against the mad god and shared with her all she knew about their birthplace, though it unfortunately led to her death.
Years later, Anankos revived Arete as his minion, wiping out her memories in the process, and sent her to attack warriors from another world sent by his good half in order to protect his child Corrin, only for said warriors to defeat her and force her to withdraw.
Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation[]
Arete first appears after the prologue of the Revelation route. She encounters Corrin, their retainers and Azura after they jumped into the bottomless canyon (inside of which is located Valla) while guarding her country's borders. She identifies Corrin's group as intruders and sends her troops to kill them, but they defeat them and escape.
She returns much later 2/3 of the way through the game, after Corrin's faction gained the help of the Hoshidan and Nohrian armies and decided to finally take the fight to Valla. Arete stages a surprise attack against Corrin's army as soon as they reach Valla's borders and challenges them personally this time around. However, she's defeated and escapes before anyone can identify her. She then goes to Castle Cyges, Valla's palace and Anakos's lair, and warns her fellow generals Sumeragi and Mikoto against Corrin and Azura.
She comes back several chapters later where she fully introduces herself as Arete and the mad god's minion and has yet another fight with her daughter Azura and her allies, only to lose to them yet again and flee. She appears one last time in the next chapter, where she confronts the heroes along with Scarlett, a former member of their army who died right before Arete's second attack but was revived by Anankos. After they are both defeated, Scarlett and Arete revert back to their original personalities and die surrounded by their loved ones. Arete, whose memories have finally been restored, apologies to Azura for not being a better mother and leaving her alone, only for her child to tell her that she wasn't alone since her step-siblings and cousins where at her side. Arete then passes away peacefully while telling her daughter that she loves her.
Fire Emblem Heroes[]
Arete returns as the boss of chapter 10 of Fire Emblem Heroes's Book V. She has been summoned to the World of Zenith, the world where Fire Emblem Heroes takes place, after her defeat in Fire Emblem Fates and now acts as an officer of Nidavellir, the main antagonists of this book. She faces the Order of Heroes alongside other characters from Fire Emblem Fates. At the end of the battle, she is defeated once more but the rest of the army of Nidavellir manages to hunt down and nearly defeat the heroes. They are saved at the last minute by Bruno, one of their allies and manage to stop the army of Nidavellir.
Arete reappears afterward as a recruitable boss during the Grand Hero Battle Event.

Quotes[]
“ | Arete: Why is it that looking at you gives me such an incredible headache? Azura: I... Could it be... Arete: No matter—killing you will make the pain go away. Prepare yourself for the next world. Azura: After our last encounter, I readied myself for this moment. I knew that, if we met again, I might have to be the one to take you down. |

“ | Arete: It was good of you to come and meet your death firsthand. You've been quite the thorn in our side. You and your mother both. Not to mention a pain in my skull. Every time I lay eyes on you... Every time... Shigure: If you don't understand why that is, then you are truly lost to me. I had hopes...daydreams...about what might happen if you could be saved. What joy we might have shared. What songs we might have sung! Arete: You flatter yourself. Why would I deign to do these things with you? Shigure: Do you feel nothing when you look at me? At this pendant? It doesn't stir anything at all within you? Arete: What does the great King Anankos's loyal servant care for such things? Perhaps this pain will stop when I silence you once and for all. But first, let me hear your voice. Sing once more before fading into nothing. Shigure: If I sing, it will be your funeral dirge. For I see there can be no mercy for you. Farewell, Grandmother... |

Trivia[]
- Despite only appearing in one route of the game, Arete's death is what (partially) caused Garon to become evil, kickstarting several events of the games.
