Earl Argleton, also known as the Chavi Slasher, is a minor antagonist of the 2021 anime series Moriarty the Patriot, adapting from the manga of the same name. He serves as the main antagonist of the series' first episode, "The Earl's Crimes". He is a British Earl living in London who in secret secretly preys on young boys for him to kill, with all his victims being the sons of commoners he interact with.

He was voiced by Masaki Terasoma in Japanese, and by Barry Yandell int he English dub.

Appearance[]

Argleton is a man of imposing height, oblong shaped head, blue eyes and sports black combed hair. Due to his status as a nobleman, Argleton has a sophisticated fashion sense with a custom designed suit and a ring that bears his family crest.

Personality[]

Argleton is a man devoid of humanity. The reason he specifically eyes children to kill in secret is because they are not as fully developed, so he takes eager satisfaction in the fear and suffering they display when he cuts their lives short. In public he does keep a calm and regal exterior, but is noticeably struggling to hide his depraved obsession, clearly losing composure when William deduces his connections to the recent murders. Ultimately he is revealed to be a mere coward that targets people who can't defend themselves and can only squirm when the same fate that came to the children he murdered awaits him at the hands of a vengeful Eden.

Biography[]

Argleton is an Earl of nobility and one of the founding members of the Gastros Club. In secret however, he was the gruesome serial killer that preys on children, specifically young boys. Argleton's usual targets are the sons of all the owners of the commoner business he interacts with, from Eden's Tailors, Goldstein Jewellers, R. Masters Clock Smith, Morgan Bros. Company, and Shannon Racing Club.

Using his connections as an Earl, he hires a corrupt Constable to abduct the boys at night and take them to an abandoned building, where Argleton will slowly torture the boys to death. Upon finishing he disposes of the bodies on the middle of the streets to be found by the public. One of his victims wasn't even connected to the commoner businesses and was simply an orphaned street performer named Cass who would play his concertina across the Gastros Club. Angleton would watch the boy from his sual seat by the window, and then eventually subjected Cass to the same brutal fate.

His most recent victim was Eden's son, to which Argleton spends the rest of his time on the Gastros Club where he will meet William James Moriarty. Moriarty offers his guesses on where Argleton gets everything from. While initially surprised, as the guesses continue he realizes that WIlliam may know his dark secret. William deduces his motive for targeting young boys are simply because they are not fully developed. Knowing that his worries are true, he excuses himself and orders the constable to follow and silence Moriarty. However, Moriarty is able corner the constable to confession and reveals Argleton's identity to Eden as his son's killer. Argleton is eventually abducted, bound and gaged in the same abandoned building he tortured all the boys to death. Desperately trying to break free, it comes to no avail as William leaves Eden alone with Argleton who butchers him, to which William closes the door to leave Argleton's corpse to rot and be forgotten.

Trivia[]

  • The events of "The Earl's Crimes" were all created specifically for the anime adaptation of the series, so Argleton is an anime-only villain.
  • His title as the Chavi Slasher comes from his modus operandi of killing boys. It's derived from the word chav, a derogative British term for boys of low social status.
