The Argos are a hostile race of extra-planar entities from Dungeons & Dragons, specifically the more science-fantasy setting of Spelljammers. They are a neutral evil species who outwardly resemble a gigantic amoeba with many eyes and mouths, they are related to the more known Beholders and are classed as large monsters, ranging from ten to twenty feet and being governed by an unending hunger, as well as personal conquest.

Biography[]

Argos inhabit the same regions of Wildspace as Beholders and while usually solitary creatures may sometimes be found aboard Behold vessels, acting as guards or other aid. When they encounter most other life they are prone to try and devour them on sight, continuing this pattern of ravenous eating until it has grown full, at which point it will retreat for a rest before resuming the cycle again.

Argos are not stupid creatures despite this hunger, and often scavenge the remains of their victims to acquire stolen weapons or gear by which to add to their already formidable array of powers.

Like true amoeba, Argos can engulf victims and digest them with powerful acid. They can also control their ooze-like form and cling to sheer surfaces or fire out tendrils by which to attack or ensnare enemies. They have up to a hundred eyes and just like Beholders, each eye has a unique power, despite this only twenty known effects have been seen from Argos, suggesting many of their eyes emit the same effect.

Finally if an Argos fails to find enough food to sustain itself it may enter a state of hibernation, crystallizing itself for up to a year. Due to their fearsome appetites, it takes no more than a week from their last meal to induce this state of near-starvation.
