Arjay is a Supporting Character later One of The Two Secondary Antagonists (Alongside Callis) of Borderlands 4.
He was a Former Crimson Resistance Recruit who broke free The Protagonists from Order's Custody which after he gave the Echo-4 Transfer ship to them to escape from The Timekeeper's Mind Control, he ends up stabbed by The Tyrant once he got possessed instead.
After The Protagonists killed Vile Lictor, he revealed that he had survived only to become an experiment for Vile Lictor, which through these experiments Arjay was given powers similar to that of a siren, however the experiments took a grave mental toll on him, driving him completely insane and began his resentment towards The Vault Hunters and Lilith (Which blamed her for causing Kairos' Chaos in the first place).
Biography[]
Arjay was Born on Kairos and lived in the slums of Dominion City for a majority of his life. While in the slums he dreamed of escaping Dominion City and becoming a Vault Hunter as a means of rebelling against The Timekeeper, believing it to be true freedom. Arjay had been working at a sorting station for some time whenever Elpis crashed into Kairos and in the confusion of the event Arjay stole his foreman's ECHO-4 unit and escaped Dominion City. In the escape he discovered that ECHO-4 was capable of jamming his bolts signal to The Timekeeper, preventing him from taking control of his mind. At some point Arjay became acquainted with Claptrap, and became the first member of his Crimson Resistance. Arjay also started leaving audio logs through out Kairos on his travels, informing those who wish to be Vault Hunters about the people, sights and dangers of the planet.
After the vault hunters have their bolts installed by The Timekeeper, Arjay and his companion ECHO-4 break into the prison they were trapped in. Arjay informs the vault hunters they are with the Crimson Resistance and helps them stage a Mass Breakout. While escaping the prison, Arjay informs the vault hunters that it is unlikely the prisoners they help escape will stay free for long citing The Timekeepers ability to possess anyone who has been given a bolt, and that the real purpose of the mass breakout was to draw attention away from themselves so they will have time to get to the Crimson Resistance Headquarters to jam the vault hunters bolt, which is the only way they can be free of the time keepers control while retaining their sanity.
Despite Arjay having preemptively secured transport to escape to the Crimson Resistance Headquarters, once they arrive it was destroyed in an ambush by Warden Scathe, after the vault hunters defeat Scathe and check up on Arjay, they are possessed by The Timekeeper and attempt to strangle him to death. Desperate, Arjay transferred ownership of his ECHO-4 unit to the vault hunters, freeing them from The Timekeepers control, but getting possessed in the process. While under The Timekeepers control, Arjay stabs himself with his knife and falls to the ground.
Despite his injury, Arjay survives his encounter with The Timekeeper, who then proceeded to give Arjay to Vile Lictor. Lictor conducted numerous unethical experiments on Arjay to test the effects of the Phase dimension on human subjects. Through these experiments Arjay was given powers similar to that of a siren, however the experiments took a grave mental toll on him, driving him completely insane. After the vault hunters defeat Vile Lictor, a masked Arjay arrives to relish in the knowledge his torturer had perished. The vault hunters mistaking him for Lilith call out to him, at which point he reveals his identity to the vault hunters. He then explains what Vile Lictor had done to him while harboring most of the blame on Lilith, vowing to keep her trapped in the phase dimension for as long as he can. He warns the vault hunters to go back to reality and drop the vault hunter act, lest they have to face him again.
When the vault hunters assist Zane and Amara with going to Elpis to rescue Lilith from the Phase, Arjay contacts the vault hunters saying that he could feel them attempting to rescue Lilith before it happened, he then warns them that he can’t let them rescue Lilith because of what he saw in the phase, and that if she was freed she will break the rules of the universe. While on the Space Elevator, Arjay ambushes the vault hunters and their crew, attempting to eliminate them all. He temporarily incapacitates the vault hunters by throwing them off the platform, leaving Amara and Zane to fend for themselves. Arjay stabs Amara in the upper arm and pinned her to the ground, but after a well placed shot from Zane and the vault hunters recovering with a tether, Arjay was defeated and thrown down to Kairos from high above, however even the vault hunters acknowledge he is not finished yet.
Arjay then taunts the vault hunters on the path to The Timekeeper, calling them grave robbers who do not care about the people of Kairos, and that they doomed the planet when they freed Lilith. He then sends some enemies from the phase to attempt stop the vault hunter, but when they fail, he says that he will not stop until one of them is dead.
After the vault hunters defeat The Timekeeper, Arjay sets a trap within The Timekeepers vault, trapping the vault hunters in the Phase with him. The vault hunters attempt to empathize with Arjay, acknowledging that his powers are killing him and that Lilith could help him, but Arjay declines as he doesn’t want Lilith's help, he wants freedom. Arjay then attacks the vault hunters and attempts to kill them, however he fails, and before he dies, he warns the vault hunters that they will ruin everything.
