Humans have ruled the seas for far too long. Looking down from their ivory towers. Towers built on the backs of fishmen. Your government fear my people, so you forced us into slavery. (…) Save your sympathies, boy. Our abuse and persecution end now. I will lead the fishmen as we mount a revolution for the ages. It’s your turn to know humiliation and pain. (…) I’m just getting started, darling. But, Nami, you… you could have been spared, taking your place right by my side. But no, just like the rest of your kind, you betrayed me. And for what? For this? (…) I’m just playing by human rules. With these maps, I will create a world where the fishmen reign supreme. With knowledge of every Marine base and pirate stronghold, nothing can stop me from taking the East Blue and every other sea after that. Oh yes. And, Nami, it’s all thanks to you. Hmm. So tell me, Pirate King…Could you have used her so effectively?
~ Arlong reveals his master plan to Luffy and Nami.
I'll do you the kindness of killing you all together.
~ Arlong to Luffy

Arlong is the main antagonist of the first season of the 2023 live-action series One Piece, based on the anime/manga franchise of the same name. He is a strong, sadistic and ruthless fish-man who is the leader of the Arlong Pirates and ruler of Arlong Park, and the arch-enemy of Nami.

He is portrayed by McKinley Belcher III in his first villainous role.

Biography[]

Arlong first appears where he arrives at Buggy the Clown’s circus tent where he explains Buggy’s place in the food chain and that if he pulls a job in the East Blue, he has to pay tribute. Then Arlong’s head officer, a stingray fishman named Kuroobi, tells him that Buggy has ransacked Orange Town, and Buggy lies about it and says that it was destroyed when he first came in. Arlong consoles the clown and attempts to take a bite out of him, but then Buggy coaxes Arlong to let him live because there’s a rubber guy in a straw hat that goes by the name of Monkey D. Luffy that’s out there disrespecting him now that he just knocked over a Marine base in Shells Town and keeps talking about finding the One Piece. Arlong hesitates and realizes in his own misanthropic thoughts; that the One Piece is a filthy excuse for humans to spread their filthy presence across the seas. Buggy makes a deal with Arlong, which is if he let him live, he’ll help him go after Luffy, and soon, Arlong orders Kuroobi to stuff the clown’s head in a bag. Arlong then appears a second time, terrorizing the Baratie along with Kuroobi and Chu, a fishman with big lips. He states that he’s hunting for Luffy. Then, the restaurant’s owner, Chef “Red Leg” Zeff, bribes the gangsters that they can get anything off the menu with no charge, but then Arlong makes a deal with him. The deal was that if Zeff doesn’t find Luffy by the time he finishes his meal, he will start eating the customers. Then Luffy and his friends, Usopp and Sanji, walk in and confront Arlong. Luffy asks how Arlong found him, and Chu pulls Buggy’s head out of the bag. Luffy soon realizes that Buggy was tracking them this whole time, because Buggy secretly snuck one of his ears in Luffy’s hat and told Arlong where to find him. Luffy then challenges Arlong to a fight. Arlong accepts the challenge…and beats him up completely. But then, Nami shows up and passes Arlong the map to the Grand Line. She says that she was never on Luffy’s crew and that she conned him into giving her the map so that she could give it to Arlong. Nami tells Arlong to not waste his time trying to kill a devil fruit eater and just throw him into the water and let him drown instead. Arlong then appears where he is in the Map Room of Arlong Park, having a word with Nami, saying that Nami should be proud of herself because now they now know every Marine base and Pirate stronghold and that they are one step closer to the Goa Kingdom because of Nami’s maps that she drew for him. Arlong then tells Nami that one of the villages in the Conomi Islands is late with their tribute payment…Coco Village. Nami says that she isn’t exactly welcome there and that Arlong should send some of his officers instead, but Arlong refuses and says that the job requires a human’s touch. The reason why she isn’t welcome in Coco Village is because that when she was a kid, Arlong and his army placed the villagers under their control and stole their money, one hundred thousand Berry per adult and fifty thousand per child. Then, Arlong and Kuroobi broke into Nami’s hut, where Nami’s adoptive mother, Bellemére, stood unarmed to pay Arlong a hundred thousand Berry, while Nami and her adoptive sister, Nojiko, hid inside a cellar door. But then, Arlong notices that there are three plates of tangerines on the table, and Bellemére soon confesses that she has two daughters. Then, Nojiko and Nami get out of the cellar, consoling their mom and saying that why didn’t she just lie about it. And then Bellemére decided to sacrifice her life for the sake of her children’s wellbeing, so she makes Arlong take the money as tribute for her children. Arlong asks if she’s sure about the choice she’s making, and then he pulls out his gun and shoots Bellemére. The girls cried in horror. The next day, when the villagers paid their money to the fishmen, Nami decided to step up and join Arlong’s crew. She shows Arlong one of the maps she drew, and then Arlong accepted her enrollment on one condition, if Nami was able to pay him a hundred million berry, he will grant the villagers their freedom. She accepted it and was never welcomed into the village again. She then arrives at Coco village in the present day and then says that they’re short. The village’s sheriff, Genzo, explains to Nami that Arlong has bled them dry, but Nami cockily tells him to go find more blood. She then leaves. Arlong appears another time throwing a rave party at Arlong Park with his fellow comrades. Nami walks up to him saying that they need to talk about Coco Village’s tribute and their deal terms. Arlong says that they can talk tomorrow because Coco village would still be there, provided they paid the tribute in full. Then, a snobby Marine Captain named Nezumi and his men walk in and tell Arlong that there’s been sightings of fishmen stirring up mischief around the Conomi Islands, suspecting that it was Arlong. But then, Arlong says that they’re having a party and that they should just talk about this in the Map Room. Arlong demands Nami to join them. After Arlong has a talk with Nezumi to cover up his crimes, Coco Village isn’t able to pay the monthly tribute, so Nami, having raised enough funds, decides to buy back Coco Village from Arlong before he destroys it. Arlong agrees, but he sends Nezumi to Nami’s house to prevent her from liberating the village. Arlong then appears at the center of Arlong Park, rallying his troops to a pep talk before they set out to rule the seas. He says to them that it is time to go out and get revenge on the humans who’ve done them dirty and that they won’t surrender until their plan succeeds. The latter then attacks the village and they set it on fire. Arlong makes his final appearance where he battles Luffy in the Map Room while Usopp, Zoro, and Sanji battle his minions outside. Luffy then realizes that maybe he can’t beat Arlong, but he can destroy everything he built. So Luffy crushes Arlong and the entirety of Arlong Park with his Gum Gum Battle Axe. Nothing is known of what happened to Arlong but it is probably presumed that Arlong has been arrested by the Marines.

Personality[]

Arlong is a very intimidating and sadistic man.
