Armand is the secondary antagonist in Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles series.

He is a centuries old vampire with the appearance of an androgynous seventeen year old boy, although on the surface a charming, sweet and caring person he is in actuality cold hearted, possessive and impulsive to a dangerous degree, arguably being one of the most dangerous vampires in the whole series.

He appears as the main antagonist of Interview with The Vampire and The Vampire Lestat while taking a backseat in most other installments while also getting time in the limelight as the titular protagonist of The Vampire Armand.

He was portrayed by Antonio Banderas in the 1994 film adaptation of Interview with the Vampire who also played Miguel Bain in Assassins and Burger-Beard in SpongeBob The Movie: Sponge Out of Water. He was portrayed by Matthew Newton in the 2002 film adaptation of Queen of the Damned.

Personality

Armand on surface value appears to be a polite, noble and decent person and much nicer than most other vampires however this is quickly shedded when it's revealed that in actuality Armand is an immature, possessive, perverted, manipulative and two-faced opportunist who merely puts on a nice façade to get what he wants. This is primarily due to the fact that he was turned into a vampire at such a young age and as such never had the opportunity to mentally mature, this makes him a somewhat tragic figure as he genuinely doesn't and will never know any better.

Armand also does show some genuine redeeming qualities, namely in that his love for Louis although twisted was genuine and was close to bringing him to redemption however after finding out his true colours and remembering his involvement with Claudia's death Louis called their relationship off thus bringing him back to square one.

Appearance

Books

Armand is described in the books as a young man of seventeen with thick, curly, long red hair and brown eyes. He has an extravagant and elegant although not outlandish fashion sense and also exhibits many typical vampire traits (i.e his skin, eyes, fangs).

1994 film

In the 1994 film Armand is depicted as a man who although still young is a fully grown and has a thick head of long, sleek, black hair and brown cat-like eyes, he also has typical pale skin that shows off prominent veins in dark lighting and fangs seen in vampires and has a very elegant and flamboyant fashion sense. This incarnation of Armand is also perhaps best remembered for his long, sharp fingernails with a glossy sheen.

2002 film

Armand in the 2002 film looks vaguely similar to his book counterpart, being a much younger man than as depicted in the 1994 film although one who is still significantly older than Armand is described as in the novel. He has blonde hair, chalk white skin and almost orange eyes. His face also distorts far more significantly in his vampire form than previously.

Trivia

  • Armand was changed drastically in the 1994 film because it was feared that his presence as was described in the novel could have unfortunate implications in regards to potentially justifying offensive stereotypes circulating towards homosexuality in the mid-90s, due to the very homoerotic nature of some elements in the film. In the 2002 film however he was given a look much more reminiscent of his book counterpart.
