Armand Dorleac: And if you're thinking just now 'Why me, oh God?' the answer is: God has nothing to do with it. In fact, God is never in France this time of year.
Edmond Dantès: God has everything to do with it. He's everywhere. He sees everything.
Armand Dorleac: All right. Let's make a bargain, shall we? You ask God for help, and I'll stop the moment He shows up.
~ Armand Dorleac as he is about to whip Edmond Dantès.

Armand Dorleac is a supporting antagonist of the 2002 film The Count of Monte Cristo, which is loosely based on the 1844 book The Count of Monte Cristo by the late Alexandre Dumas. He was the former warden of the Chateau d'If.

He was portrayed by Michael Wincott, who also played Top Dollar in The Crow, Michael Korda in Metro, Philo Gant in Strange Days, Guy of Gisbourne in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Gary Soneji in Along Came a Spider, Prophet of Truth in Halo 2, and Scroop in Treasure Planet.

Personality[]

"God will give me justice." People are always trying to motivate themselves. Or they keep calendars, but soon they lose interest or they die. And all I'm left with is a rather unsightly wall, I'm afraid. So I conceived of another way to help our prisoners keep track of time. Every year, on the anniversary of their imprisonment... we hurt them. Usually just a simple beating, really. Although, on their first day here, in your case today, I like to do something rather special.
~ Dorleac revealing what he does to his prisoners as Edmond is being prepared to be whipped.

Armand Dorleac is a sadist who tortures his prisoners like whipping them on the anniversary of their arrival at the Chateau d'If including one who are innocent and even mocked Edmond by "promising" to end his torture when God shows up. Even after torturing his prisoners, he forgets their names after their years of imprisonment.

Biography[]

Armand Dorleac is the warden of the Chateau d'If where he tortured his prisoners including ones that were innocent.

His first appearance was when he "welcomed" Edmond Dantès, who was sent to prison on a false charge by his former friends. Edmond begs him that he was innocent but Dorleac mockingly tells him that he knows that he is innocent and that the Chateau d'If is where they put prisoners they are ashamed of. He and two of his jailers take Edmond to his cell where they prepare him to be whipped as Dorleac reveals what they do to their prisoners who lose track of time. After mocking Edmond about stopping if God shows up, he proceeds to whip the former. This torture for Edmond proceeds to continue on for years.

However, after meeting Abbé Faria, Edmond gives up going mad and he gets used to the whipping from Dorleac. After 13 years, Faria dies from his injuries from a tunnel cave-in during his and Edmond's attempt to escape. One of the jailers informs the other two jailers and Dorleac who proceed putting Faria's corpse into a body bag but unknown to them, after they leave, Edmond takes Faria's place to escape.

Dorleac and two of the three jailers proceed to the outside to dispose of the body bag into the sea. However, one of the jailers discovers Edmond's plot to escape after finding Faria's body in the former's cell and attempts to warn Dorleac. Unfortunately, just as the jailer is trying to warn him, Edmond grabs the keys which also pulls Dorleac with him into the sea.

After Edmond breaks free from the weight holding his body down, he proceeds to kill Dorleac by drowning him as revenge for the years of abuse.

Quotes[]

Armand Dorleac: Welcome, Monsieur Dantes. I am Armand Dorleac, the warden of Chateau d'lf.
Edmond Dantès: Monsieur, I know you must hear this a great deal; I assure you I am innocent. Everyone must say that, I know, but I truly am.
Armand Dorleac: Innocent?
Edmond Dantès: Yes.
Armand Dorleac: I know. I really do know.
Edmond Dantès: You mock me?
Armand Dorleac: No, my dear Dantes, I know perfectly well that you are innocent. Why else would you be here? If you were truly guilty, there are a hundred prisons in France where they would lock you away. But, Chateau d'if is where they put the ones they're ashamed of. Let's have a look at your quarters now, shall we?
