~ Armisael to Rei Ayanami. |
Armisael is the main antagonist of episode 23 in the television anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as its manga adaptation series, appearing in two chapters of Volume 10. It is designated as the Sixteenth Angel in the original anime, whereas the manga adaptation classified it as the Twelfth Angel.
A levitating worm-like entity with the ability to assimilate other organic beings, Armisael is canonically the last of Adam's naturally created progeny. Unlike its predecessors, Armisael did not express desire to invoke the Third Impact, but instead to "merge" with Rei Ayanami, seeking to understand thinking of human beings.
Biography[]
Television Canon[]
Armisael first appeared hovering above the forest not far away from Tokyo-III. Wanting to investigate the creature's powers, NERV Organization send Evangelion Unit-00 piloted by Rei Ayanami and equipped with a Pallet Gun. The Angel immediately proceeded to attack its opponent, changing its shape from halo to worm and trying to stab through Unit-00, only to be blocked by its AT Field. In response, Unit-00 grabbed the Angel by one tip of its body and shot it with the Pallet Gun, but its efforts proved futile when it stabbed through its chest and started to merge, causing Unit-00's veins to visibly bulge.
Pinning Unit-00 against the mountainside, Armisael ignored immobile Unit-02 trying to distract it and continued merging with Rei, effectively entering her consciousness. Angel manifested itself in Rei's mind as her mirror reflection, asking if she wants to bond with it. Although Rei calmly refused, Armisael said it's too late and it will give her its feelings. Armisael then felt an intensive feeling of loneliness in its mind, asking Ayanami what it is. She explained that loneliness is a feeling of being alone.
Unit-00 then suddenly developed a massive growth on its back, resembling the previous deceased Angels from Sachiel to Arael. Commander Gendo Ikari decided that Unit-01 (who was unavailable in use ever since the incident with Zeruel) must be deployed to save Unit-00, whereas Unit-02 has been removed from the battle field. Fulfilling given command, Unit-01 summoned its AT Field, drawing the Angel's attention. Although Unit-01 managed to dodge the incoming attack, Armisael destroyed the Pallet Gun, and when Unit-01 tried to block another attack, the Angel started to assimilate it alongside the pilot. Shinji then resorted to using the Progressive Blade, which made Armisael bleed from the stabbed wound.
In response, Armisael took the form of pale Rei Ayanami's upper body. This made Rei Ayanami realize that the only way to destroy the creature is to kill a being assimilated by it, which was her. After setting Unit-00's AT Field to its maximum density, Rei Ayanami initiated the self-destruction protocol. Moment before dying in the explosion, Rei saw Gendo (without glasses) smiling at her. Unit-00 briefly transformed into a pale humanoid with a halo above its head, just as an enormous explosion obliterated it alongside large portion of Tokyo-III, successfully killing Armisael.
Manga Canon[]
Armisael was discovered by NERV Organization in chapter 62, making its first appearance in a form of cameo. In next chapter, Unit-00 (piloted by Rei Ayanami) and Unit-02 (piloted by Kaworu Nagisa) were immediately deployed to terminate the creature. Misato ordered Rei to observe the target, but Ayanami responded that the Angel is already attacking. When Pallet Guns proved ineffective against it, Armisael proceeded to attack Unit-00, which was pushed aside by Unit-02. As a response, the Angel focused its attention on Nagisa, who managed to dodge its first attack. Armisael suddenly split itself into multiple directions, starting to assimilate both pilots.
When Unit-02 managed to break out from assimilation process, Armisael sliced its left leg off before resuming their assimilation. Rei Ayanami then saw projection of the Angel inside her mind, appearing as her mirror reflection. Descendant of Adam asked her if she would like to become one with it, but First Child refused. The Angel said it's too late, just as the veins across Rei's body started bulging, before asking her about the pain in her heart. Rei said it is loneliness and explained to Angel that it's the feeling of being alone while being surrounded by others. The Angel also noted her feelings of jealousy for Shinji Ikari's attention, who directed it into Asuka Langley Soryu, which was currently in comatose state.
Just as the tears started escaping Rei's eyes, Unit-00 mutated a ginormous growth resembling Armisael's decreased sibling. After forcible removing of Unit-00's Entry Plug proved failure, Gendo Ikari ordered to deploy Unit-01. Seconds after perceiving another Evangelion Unit, Armisael destroyed its weapons and started to assimilate it. As the Angel took a form of pale Rei Ayanami to seduce Unit-01, Kaworu Nagisa was infected by Rei Ayanami's love for Shinji. Even after slicing the Angel's torso open, Armisael was unfazed and continued its assault.
Rei Ayanami then realized that the only way to kill the Twelfth Angel is to kill herself. Setting an AT Field to maximum, Rei activated Unit-00's self-destruction. The explosion obliterated both her and Armisael while annihilating several city blocks in Tokyo-III, much to everyone's shock. Before her death, Rei briefly recalled her memory when Gendo saved her from Unit-00 during its berserk incident.
Personality[]
Compared to most other Angels and similar to Arael, Armisael seems to take some interest in human psychology, which to Angels is just as alien and bizarre as their physiology to humans. Upon entering Rei Ayanami's mind, Armisael (like Leliel before it) took the shape of her mirror reflection to better communicate. The Angel does not understand concepts such as loneliness, but seems to understand the concept of jealously very well in the manga, even taking it as far as to call Rei's heart "evil".
In a combat situation, Armisael is extremely aggressive and relentless, immediately destroying any weapon its opponents wield. Its methods of attack are based on charging at the opponent with one tip of its body and stabbing though their bodies, almost instantly beginning the assimilation process. Upon its completing, Armisael gains some of its victim's psychological attributes, such as Rei's romantic love for Shinji. It can also infect other beings with said feelings, as demonstrated on Kaworu Nagisa in the manga.
Physical Appearance[]
When not attacking, Armisael takes the form of a massive ring with a DNA-like body structure. Similar to Adam and Arael, Armisael's body seems to be completely made out of light, although the Angel still possesses red blood. It apparently lacks any pre-determined form, being able to shift into an extremely long worm-like creature and later into Rei Ayanami's clone with a ghostly white body and black eyes with bloody red pupils.
Powers and Abilities[]
Armisael is highly elastic, allowing it to freely stretch and bend itself thanks to lacking bones, muscles and organs of any kind, although it still appears to have red blood flowing within its body. According to dr Ritsuko Akagi, Armisael does not have a fixated form and can change its shape to suit its needs, with ring of light being its "default" form.
Armisael possesses high degree of biokinesis, allowing it to biologically merge with living beings, change their body structure, as well as make their attributes appear on other beings' bodies, the latter of which was demonstrated on Shinji Ikari, whose hand grew several Rei faces. It is also visible when Unit-00 grows "Angel Tower", an organic construct resembling amalgamation of every previous Angel from the series, from 3rd to 15th.
When merging with other being, Armisael makes bulging veins appear on entirety of their bodies, having them undergo through "penetration" process in which AT-Field keeping their body together starts to merge with Armisael's own AT-Field.
Armisael possesses instant regenerative healing factor, which combined with Angel's assimilating touch renders it nearly invulnerable to all forms of physical damage. It was demonstrated when Unit-01 slashed it with progressive knife, creating shower of red blood, wound immediately disappeared and Angel continued its assault.
After a certain period of time, 16th Angel gains ability to telepathically communicate with merged beings, speaking to them in understandable language and assuming their mirrored form. Armisael is also able to forcefully induce paralysis and emotions onto its victims, such as when it caused Rei to shred tears, which also happened to Kaworu in the manga.
Armisael has supernatural level of physical strength and durability, being capable of easily overpowering Evangelion Units and instantly shattering their Absolute Terror Fields. Its body is immune to blunt force and gunshots from Pallet Riffles, withstanding them even at point-blank range with no harm.
