The Arne's Demon is the titular secondary antagonist of the 2021 supernatural horror film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the eighth installment in The Conjuring Universe.
It is the unnamed demon that possessed Arne Cheyenne Johnson for Isla the Occultist to complete her curse.
In the Isla's form, she was portrayed by Eugenie Bondurant. It was also portrayed by Julian Hilliard as David Glatzel and by Ruairi O'Connor as Arne Johnson.
Biography[]
In ancient times, this demon was once an angel in Heaven who served God. However, a fellow angel named Lucifer rebelled against God and gathered other angels to become his followers, including this demon. After the rebellion, Lucifer, this demon, and the other angels were cast out of Heaven. Lucifer became Satan and this demon and the other angels who were cast down became demons.
In the process, this demon was not only stripped of its status as an Angel, but was also stripped of its special powers it had as an Angel. This demon assumed an unknown rank in Hell and came to Earth to tempt and torment humans, becoming known across centuries by various names, while also being worshipped and summoned by humans for their own gains, mainly through a Stregheria curse.
In order to avoid having her own soul damned due to her mingling with the dark arts, Isla cast the Stregheria curse that involves summoning a demon from Hell and has two steps: The demon possess a human host and force them kill another person and then make them kill themselves, and then, the demon possess three other human hosts, described as the child, the lover and the man of God, and force them into committing suicide.
The first step is successfully completed when the demon possesses Jessica Strong and forces her to kill her friend, and them manipulate her into killing herself by falling from the cliff.
When the Glatzel family arrives, the second step takes place, and the demon possesses eight-year-old David Glatzel and subjects him to torment until Ed and Lorraine Warren are called to investigate. During the exorcism, Arne challenges the demon to take him instead.
Sometime after the possession, Arne kills his landlord and is taken to court. With the threat of being sentenced to death on his shoulders, Ed and Lorraine take it upon themselves to provide evidence to prove that Arne was under demonic influence. After discovering a witch totem belonging to Isla, they pay a visit to ex-priest Kastner who is later revealed to be the adoptive father of Isla having taken her in whilst investigating the Disciples of the Ram.
Isla sends the demon to kill Ed and Lorraine when they arrive to a morgue so Lorraine could use her psychic abilities to determine the scenario that led to the murder-suicide of Jessica and her friend. The demon takes on an abominable form of a bloated, decomposing corpse in its attempt at stopping them from foiling the Occultist's plans. He later takes possession of Arne again and nearly has him kill himself to complete the curse.
Returning to speak with Kastner, Isla kills her own father and has the demon possess Ed. Through Ed, the demon nearly kills Lorraine with a sledgehammer but is thwarted when Lorraine speaks to her husband to remind him of the love they have for each other. Back to his senses, Ed destroys Isla's altar.
Because the demon still required a soul before it returned to Hell, it briefly takes Isla's likeness and contorts her limbs and stabs her in the head, claiming her soul.
Trivia[]
- This demon is unique in the franchise as its actions aren't done out of malice or insanity, but a purely transactional nature.
- This demon is the first in the Conjuring franchise to currently have an unknown name, the second being the Mirror Demon.
- This demon is also the first in the Conjuring franchise who's true form is never shown.
- This demon was originally going to be referred to as The Lost Demon and director Michael Chaves expressed hope to direct a film centered around the same entity. It was originally going to be revealed in the third film but was cut in the final cut. There was going to be a subplot where Isla was working with the demon, and that the filmmaker noted that it is the same demon that torments David Glatzel in the waterbed and ultimately entered his body.
