~ Flass' breakdown as Batman threatens him with his own gun over killing Harvey Dent.
Detective Arnold Flass is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Harvey Bullock) of Season 1 of the 2024 DC animated series, Batman Caped Crusader.
He is a corrupt cop who kills criminals rather than arresting along with his partner Harvey Bullock, under the payroll of Rupert Thorne.
Arnold is a corrupt policeman who works for the GCPD, not being against using abusing his power, committing police brutality and murder as a way to meet his goals. He is also greedy, manipulative, and also willing to put his own fellow policemen in danger, showing no care for them. Arnold also treats Harvey Bullock like a slave rather than his ally. Hypocritically, he tries to have Catwoman arrested for theft despite committing having committed theft himself. Another example of his hypocrisy is when he tries to claim himself to be a "righteous" cop, even though he was willing to attempt mass murder and enable terrorism of other criminals, like what he did with The Penguin by having her to blow up the GCPD after learning her son was trying to rat her out.
He can also be lazy at times, as he prioritized in eating his lunch rather than helping Montoya apprehend Clayface, only showing up after she and Batman had already gotten the job done, showing how self-centered and neglectful when he isn't supposed to work. Flass can also be petty as well, as he kills criminals instead of arresting them for no reason and tried to kill Catwoman simply for "embarrassing" him and Bullock with her prior burglary. Another moment of his pettiness is when Bullock asked for a pickle during lunch, just for Flass to deny him of such and eat a pickle right in front of him, all without breaking eye contact.
He is also willing to have Firebug, an unhinged inmate at Arkham, freed to cause crimes of arson just for the sake of getting Batman’s attention, even though this would threaten various lives. When cornering a surrendering Firebug, Flass insisted Bullock to shoot him out of spite, fearing that he might tell the GCPD about his escape to cover their tracks, leading to Bullock killing Firebug.
He is also not against targeting innocent people just to save his own skin and cover his tracks, as shown as he was willing to have Barbara Gordon, Harvey Dent, and Batman killed. This lead to Harvey sacrificing himself to save Barbara from getting shot by, leading to the former's death. Flass also had the audacity to excuse his murder of Dent as a "righteous shoot" and defend his title as a cop as Batman forces him into a corner with his own gun, showing how pathetic and delusional he is.
Biography[]
Arnold Flass is one of the corrupt cops within the Gotham City Police Department along with Harvey Bullock. In the pilot episode, "In Treacherous Waters", he informs the Penguin that her son Ronnie is informing on her to the GCPD, resulting in her firing a shot at the building to try and kill him, endangering everyone else inside.
In "Kiss of the Catwoman", he along with Bullock go after the titular cat burglar after she got off scot-free the first she's arrested. Flass shot her in the leg and Bullock takes out the cuffs, but Flass states that won't be necessary and tries to kill her. But Batman intervenes and knocked Flass out, while taking Catwoman into custody.
In "The Night of the Hunters", the GCPD has been ordered to catch Batman after the events of the previous episode. After their initial attempts to catch him had failed, they get help from Harleen Quinzel in order to figure out how to lure the bat out. She tells them they need a masked criminal, in which Flass gets an idea and proceeds to release Firebug, a dangerous pyromaniac, from his cell. Flass and Bullock drive along with him in tow with the two saying things to entice Firebug into escaping with all hid gear, with Flass helping that by playing with a lighter.
Once Flass escapes, Firebug goes to set fire to a building in the Eastside Flats, endangering everyone inside, while Flass and Bullock make it look like Firebug actually had to fight to escape. Once Batman takes the bait, the two gather some cops to head inside to catch him and Firebug with orders to shoot on sight. The two eventually find Firebug, with the pyromaniac surrendering since he's out of fuel. Flass, however, mentions to Bullock that Firebug will talk about what they did, causing his partner to kill him to keep him quiet. Unfortunately, despite Gordon knowing what they did, the next morning's paper positions them as heroes for "stopping" Firebug, and the two are put in charge of the Anti-Batman Task Force.
In the Season 1 finale, "Savage Night", Flass was tasked by Thorne to kill Harvey Dent on account of him knowing too much, Flass and Bullock abduct Harvey as he's about to be taken before a judge. Harvey manages to escape by ticking Flass off and then getting Bullock to accidentally tip the car over. After Barbara and Harvey escape, Flass and Bullock head for the docks where they were seen heading to with some of Thorne's goons, with Flass ordering them to shoot on sight. The two then spend some time tracking the two down, eventually coming across a trail of blood with Flass follows, eventually finding them and preparing to shoot at Barbara.
Harvey sees this and intercepts the shot, which ends up fatally wounding him. Flass prepares to fire another shot to kill Barbara, but Batman intervenes and disarms him. He then proceeds to point Flass' own gun at him, to which the corrupt cop pathetically begs for his life and attempts to justify his his actions as a "righteous shooting" before multiple gunshots are heard, only for it to be revealed that Batman intentionally missed every one of them. Enraged and disgusted over using the same gun that took his parents, Batman promptly knocks him out and throws his gun into the water. While Flass' fate isn't revealed, Thorne's phone call at the end of the episode implies he was finally arrested.
