Eduardo! (...) Eduardo! [whistling] We have two ways to settle this shit! The first one, it's you giving me the shit that's mine, and we all leave in peace. The second...
~ Arruda after finding Eduardo at his uncle's house, only to be interrupted by Joe.

Arruda is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Francisco) of the portuguese Netflix series Turn of the Tide. He is a ruthless drug lord, who plans on gaining as much money and power through the cocaine that landed in the Azores. He is also Sílvia Arruda's father and archenemy.

He is portrayed by Albano Jerónimo.

History[]

Backstory[]

Arruda's backstory is mostly a mistery, but there are several details that the show explains about Arruda's past prior to the series. One of them is that when he was a child, a stray dog came to his house several times to try and kill his family's chickens, so he and his father tried to kill it three times with no success, so one day, they brought it to their house and gave it food. Arruda says that the dog stayed with his family for 12 years, and that he never saw such a grateful animal.

He also used to be in the military at one point in his life, and became friends with a man named Agostinho during that time. Sometime after this, he fell in love with a woman, with them later marrying and having a daughter named Sílvia.

While Arruda was an absent parent during most of Sílvia's childhood, when he was present, he did things that traumatized her and made her feel contempt for him, not even daring to view him as her father, such as making her go hunt rabits while she was crying over having watched the scene where Bambi's mother died. It's also heavily implied that Arruda and Sílvia's mother divorced before the show's events. During this time, he became a drug lord, and during Sílvia's teenage years, he had her boyfriend Rafael Medeiros work in his drug business.

Sometime during these events, he also hired a man named Zé as his driver, and would start to abuse him both physicaly and psychologicaly. Zé hated Arruda's treatment of him, but knew that he would never have a future, so he decided to still work for him because Zé believed it was the closest thing he would ever have to a good life, and convinced himself that Arruda was actually being kind towards him by having him as his driver.

Turn of the Tide[]

Arruda is first seen reading a newspaper when Rafael, alongside his friend Eduardo, come to see him. Arruda welcomes Rafael and tells him to sign a shirt, as a client of his told Arruda that he would pay him for Rafael's signature. Rafael then gave him a small bag of hashish, with Arruda asking him to get him a kilo the next time.

Arruda then started talking about how drugs were now going to get legalized, saying that he planned to expand his business. Arruda then gave money to Rafael, with him asking to give part of it to his daughter. Arruda then looked at Eduardo's dog Sky, and grabbed it.

Eduardo then told Arruda that no one was going to legalize drugs and that they would get arrested if they were caught with a brick of hashish. Arruda then told him that his dog wasn't going anywhere, and told him that she would only leave after she had been bred with another cattle dog.

Eduardo then tried to grab the dog, and one of Arruda's henchmen tried to kill him with a screwdriver, but Rafael stopped him and defended Eduardo. Arruda then says to Eduardo that if Rafael weren't his friend, he would have knocked his teeth in, and orders him to leave his garage.

The next day, Eduardo gave Arruda a kilo of cocaine and grabbed Sky and before leaving his garage, Eduardo asked if they were even, with Arruda saying that they were only even when he says so. Arruda is later seen at funeral march of a teenager who got killed from a a cocaine overdose.

He is later seen rewarding a kid who had given him a bag of cocaine with an ice cream, and when the kid asked if he could have two, Arruda told him that he's lucky he didn't beat him up for bringing a bag with a hole in it. He then looks at the amount of cocaine he has in his garage, which is now on the hundreds of kilos.

That night, Arruda had a meeting with his gang, and Eduardo and Rafael took part in it. In the meeting, Arruda told his gang that, due to Rabo de Peixe now becoming news' headlines, they should bring all their cocaine to him and told them that they would share the money they get from selling it.

Zé then asked Arruda how could they know that he wouldn't keep all the money to himself, with Arruda then asking how many of them were once in jail or are now living on unemployment benefit, with several of them raising their hands on both questions, Arruda then tells them that they would either risk giving their cocaine to him and maybe receive some money or receive no money at all. Arruda then mocks Zé's mother, causing the latter to leave in a fit of rage.

The next morning, after he saw Zé trying to sell cocaine by himself, Arruda broke into his car, assaulted him, and broke one of his fingers, with Arruda telling him that he would never sell cocaine in his place again, and that this would be his only warning. The next day, Arruda and his gang were caught by the police during their morning patrol on Rabo de Peixe to ceize all the cocaine in the island.

However, after the regional secretary told inspector Paula Frias that they wouldn't allow her to aprehend the people they had arrested, she reluctantly ordered the release of Arruda and his gang. After seeing Zé running away when they got released, Arruda gained the assumption that he had betrayed them, so he and one of his henchmen threw him to a hole in the Furnas, with Zé only being able to survive thanks to a man who found him the next day, although with half of his face scarred.

Sometime later, Sílvia and her mother went to Arruda's house, where they waited for him so he could pick up Sílvia. However, out of spite against Arruda, Sílvia brought his statue of the Virgin Mary to her house. After this, there was an earthquake, which caused the statue to be broken. Arruda would later call Sílvia and ask where was his statue.

Sílvia, Arruda, and Rafael would then go to see Agostinho so the latter could give Arruda a new statue. During their trip to Agostinho's store, Arruda tried to restart his relationship with his daughter, but failed because Sílvia had no interest in growing closer to her father. Later, Arruda went to see Eduardo and his friends at Sílvia's store with Zé and another one of his henchmen.

There, he questioned what was the detective of the film Dirty Harry, with Eduardo telling him that it was Harry Callahan. Arruda then told Eduardo that he thinks he is smarter than everyone else, and when Carlinhos told him he was, Arruda told him to shut up, with Eduardo saying that Carlinhos could beat him and his two henchmen to a pulp.

This causes a fight, where one of Arruda's henchmen threatened Eduardo with a baseball bat at his throat. Arruda then told Eduardo's group about what happened to Zé, with him and his other henchman mocking the name given to Zé by the population of Rabo de Peixe, Chicken Zé. Arruda then broke one of the statues of the Virgin Mary that Rafael had bought, since he came to know from Agostinho that they were using the statues to transport their cocaine.

When Eduardo tried to explain it to him, he hit Eduardo with his baseball bat, and demanded him to tell him where the cocaine was. Sílvia then told him hat she knew where the cocaine was to free Eduardo. After getting several movie boxes filled with cocaine, Arruda told Eduardo that he would be the first to go to the Furnas if he ever finds out he's hiding something from him before leaving.

While driving across a street, Arruda noticed a kid selling something, so he ordered Zé to go buy what the kid was selling. After buying it, Arruda forced Zé to sniff the cocaine, and after finding out it was really cocaine, he brought the kid to his car and demanded to know where he found the cocaine, but they both start laughing when they see Zé deficating after sniffing the cocaine. Arruda then beat up the kid offscreen, causing the kid to get a black eye.

After Sílvia suffered from a cocaine overdose, Arruda went to the hospital where she was being taken care of with Zé. There, he met up with Rafael, who started to cry, saying that he hated himself and that he only hurt the people he cared about. Arruda then promised to help him relieve the weight he was feeling if he told him everything that happened.

Arruda would then bring Rafael to a boat and have him tell him where the cocaine his group had was. After this, he had him drive to the middle of the ocean. There, he started taunting both Zé and Rafael by singing Ilhas de Bruma, and when Rafael was distracted looking at whales, Arruda chockes Rafael to death with a rope before dropping his body to the ocean. After being done with Rafael, Arruda went back to the hospital and had a talk with Sílvia's mother, whom he convinced into allowing Sílvia to stay in his house.

Sílvia and her parents would then have dinner togheter, and when she tried to drink wine, Arruda forbid her, saying that everything around her was now like cocaine. The next day, Arruda brought Sílvia to the middle of the island and trained her how to use a rifle by shooting at cans, as a way to celebrate her birthday. That night, Sílvia's friend Bruna told her that a scandinavian gang named the Mugnussons were going to kill Bruna's boyfriend Ian.

Bruna then told them that they needed to give the Magnussons a kilo of cocaine in less than a week or they would kill Ian. Sílvia would then ask for her father for help, and while he originaly refused, after Sílvia told her that Bruna helped her when she needed, Arruda decided to go along and went to Ian's house, where he told Ian to sit on his table or he would break one of his arms, which Ian reluctantly agreed.

Arruda then asked how much money he owed to the Magnussons, with Ian telling him that he owed them 60 thousand euros. While telling Arruda how Ian met the Magnussons, Arruda made Ian put a popcorn in his mouth. When Ian tried to leave the table, Arruda squished Ian's chest and demanded him to sit down. Arruda then asked how much cocaine would the Magnussons buy, with Ian telling him that they would buy as many as they wanted to sell.

Arruda would then meet with the Magnussons the next morning, but since they found out that the bags they were selling were made of flour and sugar, a shootout started between the Magnussons and Arruda's gang. It was revealed through a flashback that everything that happened was all a trick made by Eduardo, who had organized a plan to get his cocaine back and kill Arruda.

In the flashbacks, it was shown that Sílvia found out through Zé that Arruda killed Rafael, and that she helped in Eduardo's plan to get revenge on her father. The Magnussons also never attacked Ian or his house, and it was just Ian who destroyed his house to make it look like he was assaulted and robbed. The cocaine was also given to Eduardo and his friends by Zé. In the present, Arruda escapes the shootout, and after noticing Zé at the top of a lighthouse, he followed him.

When he found Zé, Arruda threatened at gunpoint, demanding to know who betrayed him. Zé then told him that it was Sílvia who betrayed him as a final taunt towards Arruda, who then headbutted Zé and threw out of the lighthouse, killing him. A few days later, Arruda threatened Carlinhos' mother and killed one of her birds. After finding out about where they were, Arruda went to Eduardo's uncle Joe's house with two of his henchmen.

There, Arruda hit Eduardo with his pistol and ordered his henchmen to kill Eduardo's friends and his uncle. Despite this, Joe killed his henchmen by throwing a grenade at them. Arruda then threatened Eduardo at gunpoint to know where the drugs were, and Sílvia pointed a shotgun at Arruda and demanded him to let Eduardo go. Arruda then tried to convince Sílvia to lower her gun, but she wasn't convinced and tried to shoot him.

Enraged, Arruda grabbed Sílvia by the neck and tried to choke her to death, but he was stabbed by Eduardo with an arpoon, killing him. The bodies of Arruda and his henchmen were then burried by Eduardo and Joe. A few days later, Sílvia's mother talked to her about Arruda, and showed her a picture book of when she was a child, with some of those images containing Arruda. Sílvia's mother tells her that her father was an asshole, but he was their asshole. She also expressed that she wished Arruda could have given up on his criminal activities, but she knew Arruda and that not even a wife or a child could have changed his ambitions.

Personality[]

Arruda is a ruthless, arrogant, self-centered, power hungry, and vengeful crime boss who desires to use cocaine to expand his criminal empire. He is also suprisingly intelligent despite him being an addict with a short temper. He does not tolerate betrayal, and will go to the point of torturing others at the hint of them being against him. Arruda is also sadistic, and likes to mock and abuse his henchman Zé for little to no reason. Arruda also sees himself as a follower of god and says that he is not the guy to turn his back in people in need.

However, instead of it being portrayed as kindness, Arruda uses such moments of need from others to emotionaly manipulate them, as seen with Zé, whom he gave a job as his driver when he was unemployed. Arruda's cruelty is not limited towards adults, as he has no problem with beating up children nor using them to sell his cocaine. He is also shown to be homophobic, calling Carlinhos and Ian names and even forced Ian to put a popcorn in his mouth.

Arruda's most redeeming quality throught most of the series was his care for his daughter Sílvia, who, despite causing some traumatic events as a child and being absent through most of her life, Arruda tries to help in any way he can, such as giving her money, offering to help her take care of her mother's house for her, and telling one of his henchmen to stop talking when he started making sex jokes about films' titles.

When he found out that Sílvia had betrayed him, Arruda was shocked and saddened by it. However, when he meets Sílvia again, he has no problem with having his henchmen kill her alongside Eduardo, his friends, and his uncle Joe. While at gunpoint by Sílvia, Arruda tried to convince her to lower her shotgun and said that they could go back to their home if she told him where the cocaine was.

When Sílvia tried to shoot him, Arruda became angered, yelling how could she be able to kill her own father, before trying to choke her to death. Arruda's relationship with Rafael also seemed to be one out of respect, as he tells Eduardo that he would have broke his teeth off when he first met him if not for being Rafael's friend. After Sílvia almost died from a cocaine overdose, while Arruda was angry at Rafael for causing it, after Rafael started crying and saying that he only hurted the people he loved, Arruda comforted him and told Rafael that he would help him lose the weight he was feeling.

However, this was revealed to be nothing more than an act of manipulation, as after he convinced Rafael where he hid his cocaine, Arruda killed him and threw his body at the middle of the ocean. When talking about him towards Sílvia, he mocks him and calls him a coward, and when confronted by Eduardo, he says that the latter is weak, and that even Rafael was better than him. When Eduardo angrily told Arruda that he killed Rafael, he denied it and angrily hit Eduardo with his pistol, saying that Eduardo was the one who killed Rafael, showing that he refuses to accept any of his actions.

In his last moments alive, Arruda's thoughts were those of someone with no hint of compassion and kindness left in him, and the last thing he ever did before his death was express his anger at his daughter, the only person Arruda was shown to ever truly care about, and trying to kill her.
