~ Artemis berating Sunny. |
Artemis is a minor antagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands, serving as the main antagonist of the episode "Black Heart, White Mountain".
She is the spirit of a girl who was killed by Sunny long ago, and returns to haunt him after he is put into a coma by Cyan. Her goal is to turn Sunny's son Henry into a killer like his father, and eventually bring back the spirits of every person that Sunny ever killed to devour him as well.
She was portrayed by Hazel Doupe.
Personality[]
It is unknown how Artemis acted when she was alive, but she claimed to have been an innocent person who did not deserve to be killed by Sunny. As a spirit, she was extremely vengeful towards him and wanted to destroy any hope that he had at a normal life. In the nightmare, Artemis convinced Sunny's son Henry that he must become a killer like his father, and eventually even talked him into killing his mother, as she wanted him not to be a killer. During her final confrontation she displayed how much of a callous and sadistic spirit she had become, gleefully mocking Sunny over the fact that she forced his son to kill his own mother, before summing all of the other spirits of Sunny's victims to kill him as well.
Biography[]
When she was alive, Artemis lived with her brother in an unknown part of the Badlands. At some point, the place they lived in was attacked by a group of Baron Quinn's Clippers being led by Sunny, his Regent. Sunny ended up killing both Artemis and her brother in a single sword stroke, and didn't even remember the two of them after this incident. Years later, Sunny gets into a fight with Cyan, a powerful Dark One from the Abbot Monastery, and while he does manage to kill him, Cyan uses a technique known as the Hand of Five Poisons on Sunny right before he dies. This causes Sunny to collapse and enter a coma that will slowly kill him. M.K. and Bajie, two of his allies, begin searching for a way to save him. While in his coma, Sunny enters a dream where he is with his wife Veil and son Henry, and lives happily on a farm. However, this is actually a nightmare where Artemis' spirit has returned to torment him. Artemis begins speaking to Henry in secret, convincing him that he must become a killer just like his father. Eventually, Artemis confronts Sunny and begins strangling him, causing his physical body to begin suffocating. M.K. saves Sunny by putting a breathing mask on him to stop him from suffocating, which causes Artemis to be dispelled in the nightmare. Sunny then finds Veil dead, and immediately runs to find Henry, believing he may be in danger as well. He finds Henry in the farm stables, asking what happened. Henry explains that Veil wanted to stop him from being a killer like Sunny, and so he murdered her. Henry then disappears, and Sunny spots Artemis in the woods, and begins pursuing her. He confronts her on convincing Henry to kill his mother, at which point she reveals who she is. She berates Sunny over having murdered her brother and herself and not even remembering their faces, even though his face was the last thing they ever saw. She then summons the spirits of every person Sunny ever killed, who begin attacking him. Despite his superior fighting ability, he is overwhelmed and his body begins succumbing to death. However, M.K. and Bajie use a set of needles they stole from the Abbot Monastery that can stop the Hand of Five Poisons, and stab them into Sunny's chest, awakening him from the nightmare and saving him from dying.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Teleportation: Inside of Sunny's nightmare, Artemis was able to teleport herself and others at will, allowing her to speak with Henry without Sunny or Veil ever seeing her. It also enabled her to easily slash Sunny across the back despite him being the most skilled warrior in all of the Badlands.
- Summoning: During her direct confrontation with Sunny, Artemis was able to summon the spirit of every other person he killed as a Clipper in order to kill him in his nightmare and cause his physical body to succumb as well.
Trivia[]
- Artemis is the only confirmed spirit in the series.
- It is unknown if spirits being summoned is a result of the Hand of Five Poisons technique or if Artemis specifically appeared to torment Sunny.
