I never tell people exactly how clever I am. They would be too scared.
~ Artemis Fowl II

Artemis Fowl II is the titular main protagonist of the Artemis Fowl series.

In the film adaptation, he was portrayed by Ferdia Shaw.

Appearance[]

Artemis has black hair and blue eyes. He is very slim. He almost always is dressed in a suit.

Personality[]

Artemis is extremely confident to the point of arrogance. He is very aristocratic and has an elitist attitude, even though he doesn't discriminate against the poor.

At the start of the series he is cold and almost psychopathic in nature. However, he becomes more selfless and sympathetic as the story progresses.

Artemis is very protective of his family and friends, even at the start of the series. It is his father's kidnapping that drives him into villainy in the first book.

History[]

Artemis Fowl[]

After Artemis Fowl I went missing, Artemis did research into fairies in order to find a source of money. He and Butler tracked down a sprite in Ho Chi Minh City. Artemis poisoned her, and offered her the antidote in exchange for her Book. After he and Butler returned home, Artemis realized that his mother, Angeline, didn't recognize him. Artemis managed to translate the Book into English.

After learning about the Fairy ritual, he kidnapped Holly Short. He put her tracker on a ship and when Commander Root came to investigate, he blew up the ship to send a message. He confronted Holly, and tricked her into thinking that she told him information about the fairies.

The LEP laid siege to Fowl Manor. The Retrieval team came to the manor. However, Artemis found a way to see through their shields. He sent Butler to attack them. When Root came to negotiate, Artemis demanded one metric ton of gold. He pretended to slip that the fairies could enter when he was dead.

Root send Mulch to break into the manor. Butler found him, but Mulch knocked him out with Dwarf gas. Holly managed to escape from her cell, but was unable to leave the manor. She confronted Artemis and punched him in the face. However, they noticed the Troll which was sent by Briar Cudgeon. The troll fatally injured Butler but Holly healed him, allowing him to defeat the Troll.

After the ransom was sent in, Artemis gave Holly half the gold to heal his mother. After Holly left, the LEP sent in a bio-bomb. However, Artemis, Butler, and Juliet escaped by taking sleeping pills. When he woke up, he found that his mother was better.

The Arctic Incident[]

The Russian Mafia sent a video to Artemis, showing that they had captured Artemis Fowl I. Artemis and Butler made plans to go to Russia.

The LEP noticed that goblins were using human batteries to power their guns. Holly was sent to arrest Artemis and Butler, thinking that they were responsible. The LEP realized that Artemis was innocent. They asked Artemis if he and Butler could help track down the source of the batteries. Artemis agreed in exchange for help in rescuing his father. They tracked down Luc Carrère, who was sending the batteries to Cudgeon and Opal Koboi.

Artemis, Butler, Holly, and Root traveled to Russia. There, they were attacked by Goblins. Butler and Root were trapped under ice. Artemis and Holly needed to board a moving train to rescue them. The rescue was a success, but Holly lost a finger. Artemis figured out how to restore Holly's magic so her finger could be reattached.

The group then tracked down Mulch Diggums. With his help, they broke into Koboi labs. Artemis and Foaly sent a video proving Cudgeon was planning on betraying Koboi, causing Koboi to attack him. Cudgeon fell into the plasma cannons, and he was killed.

Afterwards, Artemis and the group went back to Russia. There, they tricked the mafia into throwing his father overboard, where he was rescued by Holly.

The Eternity Code[]

Artemis used stolen fairy tech in order to build an amazing piece of technology called the C-Cube. Artemis offered to give Jon Spiro a chance to sell his assets before the Cube was released. However, Spiro stole the Cube and Arno Blunt shot Butler.

Artemis asked Holly to heal Butler. Afterwards, the fairies agreed to help get the Cube back in exchange for Artemis, Butler, and Juliet being mind-wiped. Spiro sent Loafers McGuire to kidnap Artemis. However, he was stopped by Mulch. Mulch joined the group and pretended to hand Artemis to Spiro. Artemis had a plan to cut off Spiro's thumb to break into the vault, and have Holly reattach it. Holly initially disagreed but gave in eventually. Artemis broke into the vault, but Spiro was waiting for him.

Spiro forced Artemis to activate the Cube. Artemis activated the Cube, but it was actually being controlled by Foaly. Artemis tricked them into going to Phonetics. There, Artemis escaped with the Cube, and Spiro, Blunt, Pex and Chips were arrested.

Artemis, Butler, and Juliet were mind-wiped. However, Artemis secretly gave a disc containing fairy information to Mulch.

The Opal Deception[]

Opal Koboi, along with Mervall and Descant Brill managed to escape LEP custody. She murdered Julius Root and framed Holly for it.

Artemis and Butler broke into a German vault in order to steal a painting called the fairy thief. However, Opal left a bomb in the painting. Butler saved them both, but they were injured. Holly rescued Artemis, and asked for his help. Artemis demanded money in exchange for helping her. However, they were both captured by Opal. The two of them were put in an amusement park filled with trolls. Artemis and Holly managed to survive long enough to be rescued by Mulch and Butler. They gave Artemis the disc that returned his memories.

The group discovered Opal's plan to destroy Haven by tricking humans into sending a probe. However, Artemis tricked her into detonating her bomb on her own ship. Opal and her minions escaped the ship, but were arrested. The group returned to Haven. Ark Sool tranquilized Artemis and Butler and sent them home.

The Lost Colony[]

Artemis and Butler were tracking demons. They found a demon in Spain, which grabbed Artemis. Artemis was pulled through time and space, but was rescued by Butler. The two were joined by Holly, and they sought to find a demon and save the demon island of Hybras. In Italy they tracked down a demon named N°1, who was tricked into entering the time stream by Leon Abbot However, N°1 was captured by Minerva Paradizo and Billy Kong.

They infiltrated the Paradizo Villa. Artemis talked to Minerva and liked her, because they shared many interests. Artemis and the group rescued N°1, but Kong captured Minerva and her family. Artemis offered to exchange N°1 for Minerva, and tricked him into doing it at his chosen location in Taiwan. Artemis managed to rescue Minerva. They found a petrified demon named Qwan, who was healed by N°1. Kong broke into the room with a bomb. Artemis, Holly, N°1, and Qwan took the bomb to Hybras. In the time-stream, Artemis took some magic.

The group was attacked by Leon Abbot. Abbot killed Holly. However, Artemis took advantage of the unstable time to prevent her death. They managed to use the energy from the bomb to bring Hybras back to the world three years in the future. Artemis met up with Butler who told him that he had two younger brothers, Myles and Beckett.

The Time Paradox[]

Artemis used his magic to mesmerize his parents into forgetting that he was missing for three years. Artemis was spending time with his brothers when he found out his mother was dying. Artemis called Holly who discovered that Angeline had Spelltropy. The only cure to the disease was found in the Silky Sifaka Lemur which was extinct, because Artemis had sold the last one to Damon Kronski six years ago. Artemis figured that he gave the disease to his mother but tricked Holly into thinking it was her fault so she would help him. Artemis got N°1 to send them back in time.

However, their information was faulty, They were captured by past Butler. Past Artemis imprisoned them in his car and took them to the zoo to steal the lemur. However, Artemis got past Mulch to help them escape and steal the lemur first. However, Past Artemis threatened to have the lemur killed, so Artemis was forced to give it to him.

Feeling guilty, Artemis admitted to Holly that he lied to her. She was angry, but Artemis made it up to her by helping her talk to past Root. The group managed to steal back the lemur, however, Holly was captured by past Artemis and Butler and sold to Damon Kronski in exchange for diamonds. Artemis infiltrated the Extinctionist Compound and rescued Holly.

Past Artemis felt guilty so he also sent a video exposing and humiliating Kronski. However, during the ensuing struggle, Artemis fell into the incineration pit, which was actually fake, and he discovered that Opal Koboi was behind everything. Opal tried to have him killed, but Artemis escaped along with all of the endangered animals.

Past Artemis felt guilty because he thought Artemis was dead, so he threw away his diamonds to help Holly escape from the Extinctionists. Artemis and Holly returned to Fowl Manor where they met past Artemis. Artemis and Holly returned to the present, along with past Artemis. Past Artemis impersonated his present self to trick Opal, while the present Artemis found where Opal was hiding and tranquilized her. They freed Angeline and Butler from Opal's control. Artemis tricked Opal into chasing him to an island, but Artemis had a stuffed monkey instead of the lemur. Artemis blew up the island, trapping Opal, who later escaped.

Artemis returned home, and was confronted by his mother, who remembered everything. Past Artemis was sent back to his own time with his memories erased. However, he vaguely remembered fairies, causing him to investigate fairies, leading back to the events of the first book.

The Atlantis Complex[]

Artemis had a mental illness called Atlantis complex, resulting in paranoia, obsession with the number five, and fear of the number four. Artemis became paranoid of Butler and tricked him into meeting Juliet in Mexico. Artemis met the LEP, and with Holly and Foaly, in Iceland in order to offer a piece of technology to protect the earth from climate change. However, Turnball Root sent the fairies Martian Probe to crash into them. Many fairies were killed, though Artemis, Holly, and Foaly survived.

Artemis manifested a dissociative identity called Orion. Orion did not have Artemis's obsessions or paranoia, but was also naive and clueless. Orion was unhelpful and kept badly flirting with Holly. Holly managed to help Artemis and Foaly escape in a submarine, and warn Haven from the attack. Holly stunned all three of them to reduce their oxygen intake. The shock returned Artemis to his normal identity. The group met up with Butler, Mulch, and Juliet.

They discovered Turnball's plan to destroy Atlantis. Artemis was forced to go underwater and battle a giant squid to get a computer core to track Root. The group ends up being captured by Root, who possesses Artemis, Holly, and N°1. However, Artemis tricked Root into electrocuting him. This caused Orion, who was free from Root's control, to come forth. Orion managed to defeat Root. Afterwards, Artemis agreed to go to therapy to treat his Atlantis Complex.

The Last Guardian[]

Artemis was in Haven completing his therapy. He and Holly were called to the LEP, because present Opal had past Opal kidnapped, and threatened to kill her. Artemis realized that if past Opal died, present Opal would undergo a nuclear explosion, along with anything she built, which would destroy Haven and Atlantis. Present Opal was moved to a nuclear reactor. Past Opal was killed, which destroyed much of Atlantis, Haven, and the surface. The explosion gave present Opal enormous power, which she used to open the first gate at Fowl manor to summon the Berserkers. The Berserkers, led by Oro, possessed Myles, Beckett, Juliet, and many animals.

Artemis, Holly, and Butler pursed Opal to Fowl manor, and met up with Mulch. They planned to stop Opal from opening he second gate, which would destroy the surface world. They fought against the Berserkers, and managed to rescue Myles, who told them about Opal's plan. Opal told Artemis and Holly to surrender. Artemis drugged Holly so she couldn't stop him. He then took Opal's clone and disguised it as Holly. He took the clone to Opal, and tricked Opal into placing the clone's hand on the gate, closing it forever. Opal, enraged, vowed to kill many fairies, so Oro killed her. Artemis's soul was taken by the second gate, and he died.

Holly and Foaly managed to create a clone of Artemis. They then put Artemis's soul into the clone, resurrecting him. However, the process left him with severe amnesia, so Holly begins to tell him the story of how they first met.

Fowl Twins[]

Artemis, now Dr. Fowl, went to Mars with Butler. He left some instructions for Myles and Beckett. He also sent a message to the LEP, saying that since Myles and Beckett had residual magic from being possessed, it would be illegal to mind-wipe them.

Film[]

In the 2020 Disney film, Artemis is significantly less villainous than his counterpart in the first novel. Artemis was a genius who lived in Ireland with his father. His father, Artemis Fowl I, would tell him stories about a hidden fairy world. When Artemis Sr. was kidnapped, Opal Koboi called Artemis II, demanding that he give her the Aculos or she would kill his father.

Artemis and Domovoi Butler searched through his father's things and found his journal on the fairies. Using it's information, they staked out a tree where his Father would meet with Beachwood Short. Eventually, Holly Short appeared there and Artemis and Butler kidnapped her.

Artemis took Holly back to Fowl Manor. There, he, Domovoi, and Juliet prepared for the arrival of the fairies. The fairies placed a Time Stop around the Manor and sent in an assault team. However, Artemis and Domovoi managed to fight them off. Domovoi damaged the Time Stop generator, making it unstable.

Artemis negotiated with Commander Root, demanding the Aculos. Afterwards, he visited Holly and identified with her about their fathers. Root made the decision to send in Mulch Diggums, which was part of Artemis's plan. Mulch broke in and managed to open the safe where the Aculos was kept. Artemis released Holly and asked her to help him. She punched him in the face, but agreed nonetheless.

Artemis and Holly met Mulch, and they told him to keep the Aculos safe. However, Briar Cudgeon sent in a Troll. Artemis, Holly, Mulch, Domovoi, and Juliet all fought the Troll together. However, Holly got stuck. The rest of them tried to fight it. Artemis managed to get hold of Holly's gun but was unable to use it. Eventually, Holly got free and Artemis gave her the gu, which she used to defeat the Troll. However, he Troll fell from the Chandelier and was going to crush Artemis. Butler pushed Artemis out of the way and was crushed instead. Butler was about to die so Artemis said Good-bye to him. However, Holly got her magic back just in time to heal him.

Holly then used the Aculos to bring back Artemis Sr., just before Opal was about to kill him. Once the siege was over, Artemis told Mulch to get arrested so he could threaten the government and media to leave the Fowl Family alone. Then, Artemis II and his father rescued Mulch.

Artemis called Opal to gloat and to tell her that he would defeat her. He, his father, and Mulch set out to defeat Opal.
