Biography[]
Arturis was a member of a species the Borg referred to as Species 116. They had resisted assimilation for centuries but by the mid 24th century they had been worn down and their only hope was that the Borg were occupied by their war with Species 8472. When the crew of USS Voyager, judging 8472 as the bigger threat, helped the Borg defeat them, the Borg quickly turned on Arturis' people, assimilating first their colonies and then their homeworld, with Arturis among 10-20,000 who escaped.
Learning of Voyager's involvement and seeing them as having sacrificed his people in order to get home, Arturis sought revenge. He used his people's natural linguistic abilities to help Chakotay, Tom Paris and Neelix with a negotiation and was invited back to Voyager as a result. Captain Janeway quickly asked for his help in decoding a message they had received from Starfleet some months earlier which had become corrupted. Arturis managed to create a message directing Voyager to certain co-ordinates. There, he had left a shift which he had disguised as a Starfleet vessel named USS Dauntless, equipped with a slipstream drive. He left a fake message claiming the vessel had been sent by Starfleet on remote control to bring them home. He expected the crew to immediately use the ship and was surprised when Janeway instead ordered a full investigation.
Arturis came close to activating the ship's drive with a repair team on board but was spotted by Lieutenant Torres. Janeway then arrived with a security team, having seen through his deception. Arturis first tried to place the blame on Seven of Nine before erecting a forcefield around himself. Starfleet evacuated most of the security and engineering personnel but Arturis went into slipstream with Janeway and Seven on board and imprisoned them behind a forcefield. He explained his motivation and revealed his intent, to pilot the ship back to his home system where they would be assimilated by the Borg. He had intended to hand the entire crew over to them but would settle for Janeway and Seven, and was unconcerned by the fact he would be assimilated as well.
Janeway and Seven broke free and tried to alter course but Arturis destroyed the navigational controls, making it impossible to change course. Janeway confronted him as Voyager, which had managed to enter slipstream after him by reverse engineering the Dauntless' engines, opened fire and disabled the shields. Arturis fired on Janeway, ignoring her offer to come with them, but she and Seven were both beamed aboard Voyager before the blast could hit. With Voyager turning away, Arturis was left trapped on his ship as it delivered him to the Borg.
