“ | We listen closely and hear clearly the words of humans. Oh yes, words and texts, the sounds and shapes of bare souls. Should they reach others, it cannot be undone! | „ |
~ Ashen Eye |
Ashen Eye is a secondary antagonist of the first season of the anime/manga series, The Ancient Magus' Bride. He is an ancient Faerie who likes to cause mischief around humans and mages, most notable examples being Chise Hatori, Elias Ainsworth, and Stella Barklem.
He is voiced by Jōji Nakata in Japanese and Greg Dulcie in English, the former of whom also voiced Kirei Kotomine from the Fate series and Kazuya Mishima from Tekken series.
Appearance[]
He wears a brown shroud that makes it look like a desert-wandering nomad, and he wields a simple wooden staff. He has two thin, almost mummified-looking limbs, that could be taken as human but actually has four arms with two usually kept hidden in their shroud. He has three purple eyes with spiraling pupils underneath his shroud.
Personality[]
He is shown to have a mischievous side, as he often play very dark tricks on humans. These tricks consist of games where the outcome of a loss invariably results in tragedy for their victims. However, there is always a way to win for those who are cunning enough, and Ashen Eye may give vague hints to help his victims figure out what they must do. Although, he does not mind losing, showing that he does have some honor.
He shows a somewhat sadistic side as well. While he does not mind losing, as long as he gets to witness the struggle of his victims, he would be satisfied. He simply finds pain to be the most interesting emotion to observe. This is why he chose to observe both Chise and Joseph, especially the latter.
Plot[]
He first appeared greeting Chise and Elias. He gave her an animal skin that she can use to shapeshift as a means of testing how loyal she was to Elias. Ashen Eye is later revealed as the one responsible for the disappearance of Stella's younger brother Ethan, having overheard her request of not wanting him as her brother anymore out of anger and decided to take her up on the offer. He then challenged Chise and Stella to find Ethan and Elias, who is kidnapped as well, and congratulates them upon succeeding. In parting, Ashen Eye also warns Stella against speaking so recklessly since one doesn't know who will be listening.
Later on, Ashen Eye works alongside Joseph by snitching to him about Chise being a Sleigh Beggy. That's when Joseph decided to possess her new best friend Stella to get close to Chise's whereabouts.
During the final confrontation, he tried to help Joseph escape from Chise, Ruth and Elias, but Elias stopped him by decapitating him. However, due to his immortality, he survives and after recovering, he checks on Joseph in the well where he's resting in the aftermath of his confrontation with Chise. Due to finally being relieved from the pain of his curse, Joseph decides to merely lay down and sleep there from that point on, which caused Ashen Eye to lose interest in him and leave.
