I have spent over one-hundred hours in crisis management meetings specifically figuring out how to cover up your bulls-it. Including all three of your straight-up murders. While you were out in the club with your crew, or getting your toe sucked by Popclaw, who, let’s not forget, you also murdered. Yeah, that’s right. I know about that. You did not give a s-it about all the collateral you caused then. Now, all of a sudden, you care because it happened to you? Go f-ck yourself. Yeah, that’s right. I said that. Out loud.
~ Ashley's rant to A-Train.
He was the best-! He was the f-cking best assistant I ever f-cking had. And I fired him to get him away from this f-cking place. I had Cameron killed.. I had him killed.. (...) I could’ve done that some other way. He didn’t have to die.. It’s-it’s so easy to become a monster around here.
~ Ashley realizing her actions with A-Train.

Ashley Barrett is a major antagonist in the Amazon series The Boys and a supporting antagonist in Season 1 of its 2023 spin-off Gen V. She is the De Jure CEO of Vought International, taking over the position after Stan Edgar resigned until Sister Sage was given the position.

She is portrayed by Colby Minifie, who also played Virginia in Fear The Walking Dead.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Nothing is known about Ashley's past, but she previously stated that her mother died of cancer when she was just seventeen years old.

Season 1[]

Ashley was Madelyn Stillwell's assistant and ended up being assigned to work with the Seven's newest member, Starlight. Ashley booked her an appearance at the Believe Expo, but amid Vought's mistreatment, Starlight had enough and revealed the truth about The Deep's sexual abuse on live TV, resulting in Ashley's firing. According to Barrett, she had a breakdown and had sex with numerous men in Barcelona.

Season 2[]

After Madelyn's death, Homelander hired Ashley back to Vought due to her being obedient in his eyes. Ashley becomes Vought's vice president, taking on the role of Madelyn and directing marketing campaigns such as the Seven films. Ashley tried to get Blindspot into the Seven, but Homelander fatally injured him and threatened Ashley, reminding her that she doesn't make decisions by herself. She soon develops trichotillomania due to the stress of her work as Homelander's mental state declines from Stormfront's popularity, and she was one of the few survivors of Victoria Neuman's "head-popping" during the congress court hearing.

After Homelander brought Ryan with him, Ashley took care of him, but after the supe returned, Ashley was asked by Stormfront what happened to her hair.

Season 3[]

After Stan Edgar is terminated from CEO of Vought-International, Homelander manipulated the chain of command to assign Ashley as the new CEO, because she would be one that wouldn't resist any ambitions or whims he wanted to follow. She also has a secretary, who is also named Ashley.

Season 4[]

Despite the reason for her assignment as CEO was to enable Homelander's every whim, he grew bored with the sycophancy, as well as afraid of his awful decisions sinking the company, which created pressure and responsibility he hadn't realised were a part of the job of being in charge. As such, Homelander sought out Sister Sage, who essentially filled the role of CEO in terms of actual planning, management, and decision making, while Ashley was relegated to being a figurehead, or as she notes, a mascot, which Homelander confirmed.

While Ashley would continue to berate the Deep, due to Sage's supe supremacy spiel, the normally hapless oceanic supe was able to exert an awkward but effective menace that frightened Ashley, thereby he became yet another asset that made her fear for her life.

Ashley is caught by A-Train at Homelander's apartment, yet she likewise caught him, thus they agree to keep each other's presence secret, since consequences would be dire.

Due to Sage's search for a mole leaking intel, A-Train realised that he would be running out of time, so confessed about his theft of security footage to Ashley, which makes her an accomplice by default; while she considers exposing him to Homelander, she altered her decision. When trying to engage with her usual domination sex roleplay with Cameron Coleman, he rejected her commands and breaks up with her due to her now being a figure head with no real power anymore. In retaliation and also to aid A-Train, Ashley framed Cameron for the theft of security footage, thus Homelander commanded members of the Seven and the so-called "Guardians" of Godolkin to beat Cameron to death.

Despite being a powerless human, she was still invited to Tek Knight's party for the ultra wealthy and most of the Seven; when Sage argumentatively questions her presence, Ashley smugly reveals her connection to Tek, as they once dated. While no longer in a relationship, Ashley and Tek still operate as sex friends, with her playing dominatrix to his activities when needed. In the sex dungeon, known as the Tek Cave, Hughie - disguised as Webweaver - is bound, with his feet bare; Ashley repeatedly tickles his feet, pausing to express vulgar desires. Ashley achieved climax, so lustfully parted with Tek, as she returned to the party; as such, she wasn't present for when the Boys bound and interrogated Tek, nor when Tek was strangled to death by his butler.

Due to helping the Boys defend against an assassination attempt that Homelander sent the Deep and Black Noir II on, A-Train was forced to reveal he was a traitor. Afterwards, A-Train went to Ashley's office, revealing this fact. Ashley panics, while also suffering guilt for framing Cameron Cole, as despite his many flaws, she didn't believe he deserved to die, and the regret is increased by the revelation that it was ultimately a futile deflection. A-Train tries to convince Ashley to let him take her anywhere else in the world, so she can escape the toxic and imminently fatal environment in Vought Tower; he relates to her, trying to help her realise that they can only rely on each other. Ashley appeared to consider his offer, but rejected it, seemingly feeling her guilt was too strong to escape. A-Train sincerely wishes her to stay safe, and departs. Ashley solemnly looked at a photo of her college aged self, where she has hairy armpits and a Che Guevara tanktop, revealing that she was once an idealist with beliefs far opposed to the fascist and heartless corporate ideologies Vought propagated and continues to propagate over the decades.

Homelander called a meeting of the Seven to reveal his plan to purge Vought of everyone who had compromising information on any of them, although mostly him. He tasked Ashley to make an essentially list of executions, which she did. While she omitted her own name, the Deep of all people pointed out that she would know more than anyone, so should be on the list, too, which Homelander concurred. Ashley overheard this, thus rushed to Homelander's room to open the secret stash of Compound V; fearing for her life, she reluctantly yet desperately prepared a dose. She injected the V, which shortly began to cause her immense agony, and appeared to be altering her flesh.

Personality[]

Ashley began as an assistant, yet her obedience and talent to avoid the wrath of Homelander allowed her to be granted the position of CEO. Even though she experienced disregard and abuse from higher ups before her own ascension, upon receiving the top position, she repeated the emotional and psychological abuse towards underlings, seemingly without any awareness of irony. While she expresses strong opinions about certain ideas, if Homelander disapproves or even seems to disapprove, she will immediately flip to the opposing argument, with her terror being the greatest motivator for her executive decisions.

Supes that lack the powers and mental instability of Homelander are treated much more harshly by her, with her usually unafraid to point out the Deep's idiocy, or expressing passive aggression to Queen Maeve. Though she seemed to hold two kinds of attitudes towards A-Train, as she was too nervous to openly label his awful ideas as such, she can assign movie concepts that he tries to oppose, yet she ignores him. A-Train is also the only member of the Seven that she openly displayed hostility to, as when he complained about wanting justice for his injured brother, she broke into an understandable tirade about the numerous injuries and deaths caused by A-Train that she had to deal with and cover up. She condemned his hypocrisy for suddenly caring about accountability because it was related to him.

Ashley holds some unusual sexual kinks, with her favoring the role of a violent dominatrix, and having sexual partners who seem to be exclusively weak-willed and pitiful men. It isn't clear if her sexual dominance was always a trait she had, or it was merely the only way that she could feel a sense of power, since in her job dealing with the Seven, she is consistently powerless and unappreciated.

Despite being aware that Homelander put her into the CEO position so he wouldn't have any opposition to his plans, she seems to hold a strong delusion that she is an important, empowered woman; she uses terms like "girl boss" to assert that she is both influential and inspiring, even though she is a pawn that enables unethical and criminal activities, even using children, thus undermining her entire preconception that she is a role model for little girls.

Ashley was initially complacent to Homelander's ruthless goals, but she does exhibit moments of defiance. When security footage revealed that Maeve and Soldier Boy survived the fall from the skyscraper and were taken away, Ashley had the footage deleted, as well as any record of it. Upon Homelander appointing Sage as the CEO with actual power, who starts to doing the few tasks that Ashley was even allowed, she showed token resistance, such as pooping in the upper part of Homelander's toilet. Doing so, she became an unwilling ally to the now rebellious A-Train, who was also there for an unrelated mission; she ended up cooperating with him and even covering his tracks so he can continue to leak strategic information about Homelander's designs for America and the world.

Trivia[]

  • Ashley has trichotillomania, which initially coincided with her aggressive sexual proclivities, however, eventually became based mostly on her stress and anxiety. By the end of season 3, she had gone almost completely bald, and needed to wear a wig.
  • Ashley is similar to Jessica Bradley, the personal assistant to James Stillwell in the comics who goes insane from the stress of her job. In the show, Jessica was introduced in season 4 as the supe Sister Sage.
