Asimov Solensan is a minor antagonist in the anime series Cowboy Bebop, serving as the main antagonist of the episode Asteroid Blues. He was a member of the Syndicate who betrayed it and killed his own henchmen, causing him to get a bounty of 2.5 million woolongs that makes him being targeted by three sides - police, bounty hunters as well as the syndicate which he was formerly a member of. He was also the husband of Katerina Solensan and a drug addict who was addicted to the drug named Bloody Eye.

He was voiced by Tarō Nishi in the Japanese version, and by Kirk Thornton in the English dub.

History[]

Asimov was a member of a crime syndicate until he betrayed his fellow members and killed them by exploiting the infighting took place within the organization. After this, Asimov stole lots of potent narcotics called Bloody Eyes - the syndicate's main source of revenue. He and his wife Katerina then tried to make money by selling Bloody Eye to highest bidder so they could escape to Mars in order to have a better life. (Bloody Eyes in Asimov's possession are worth 1,500 woolongs, enough to change and elevate a man's life) However, due to the murder his own comrades, Asimov got a bounty on his head worth 2.5 million woolongs, causing Spike Spiegel and Jet Black to hunt him.

One day, Asimov decided to sell a sample of Bloody Eye to a shop owner to get money. However, four members of the Syndicate appeared and killed the owner and tried to kill him and his wife, but due to the effects that Bloody Mary had on him, he was easily able to kill them. However, it became clear that after being relentlessly chased by syndicate killers, police and by bounty hunters and with Asimov using Bloody Eye every time to get out of crisis were taking an immense physical toll on Asimov.

Asimov would later go to a bathroom in order to make sure no one noticed that he used Bloody Eye, but Spike notices him and is able to understand he was Asimov, but acted like he didn't. Spike would then talk to Katerina, but after both understood that Spike wanted to capture Asimov for his bounty, he came along and choked Spike, nearly killing him, and only didn't because Katerina begged him not to.

They would then try to escape by using the planet's Astral Gate, but before they could do that, they try to sell a few samples of Bloody Eye to a buyer who was actually Spike in disguise. The three have a brief fight with Spike easily getting the upper hand over the more impulsive and violent Asimov. Both the police and the syndicate then find them, and they decided to run away and go to their ship. Unfortunately, events in the episode reveals that Asimov is more concerned with Bloody Eye than his own wife, much to Katerina's despair.

Asimov then tries to escape with Katerina by passing through the Astral Gate, only to be caught between rock and a hard place: Spike on Asimov's back, an army of police waiting for him and his wife at the front. Katerina understood that they are trapped and would be killed by the police before they could enter it. To prevent Asimov from getting killed by the police as well as wishing to relieve him from suffering (Asimov at this point was visibly deteriorating), she shoots and kills him before the ISSP fire at the ship, killing Katerina as well. It's also revealed after Katerina is shot that she wasn't pregnant and was only hiding samples of Bloody Eye.

Because police killed Asimov and Katerina instead of Spike capturing them, Jet and Spike were unable to get the bounty and ended up leaving empty-handed.

Trivia[]

  • Asimov's appearance seems to be based on Mariachi character from the movie Desperado, as both of them have long brown hair, medium skin, dress in dark clothes, travel with a beautiful Latina woman and are able to defeat a bar full of dangerous henchmen sent to kill them.
  • Asimov's name references the science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.
