Queen Semiramis, also known as the Wise Queen of Assyria and the World's Oldest Poisoner, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Darnic Prestone Yggdmillenia) of the 2012-2014 light novel series Fate/Apocrypha and its 2016 manga & 2017 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a playable character in the 2015 turn-based tactical role-playing mobile game Fate/Grand Order.

She was the Assassin-class Servant of Shirou Kotomine in the Great Holy Grail War.

Semiramis is voiced by Kei Shindo in Japanese and by Allegra Clark in English. Clark has also voiced the mother spider demon in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

History[]

Early Life[]

Semiramis was born during the Age of the Gods, the ancient times when magic and mystery were abundant and the divine still interacted with humanity. She was the daughter of an unknown human man and a mermaid goddess named Derketo, who was worshipped in the area that constituted modern-day Syria. Derketo was embarrassed by her conception of Semiramis, so she abandoned her infant daughter by a waterside. However, due to her divine blood, Semiramis survived and was raised in the wild by a flock of doves who nurtured her as if she was one of their own.

Semiramis was eventually found by a shepherd named Simmas, who cared for her and gave her an education. She grew into a beautiful woman with a keen intellect, and eventually married an aging general named Onnes. Semiramis studied various fields, including magecraft, music, astronomy, hairdressing, cosmetics, clothing, and dancing, and adopted a taste for luxury. Her beauty captivated many men, one of whom was King Ninus, the ruler of the major Mesopotamian civilization Assyria. Ninus forcefully took Semiramis away from Onnes and made her his concubine.

Onnes was heartbroken due to the loss of his wife, which resulted in him killing himself shortly afterwards. Though resentful of King Ninus, Semiramis nevertheless submitted to his whims and began working her way into his good graces. When Assyria went to war with another nation, Semiramis lent her tactical insights to the king's cause. Her unorthodox strategic advice led Assyria to victory, for which Ninus recognised her talents and asked for her hand in marriage. Fuelled by her desire for power, Semiramis decided to accept the king's proposal so she could usurp his throne.

Wise Queen of Assyria[]

Semiramis and Ninus got married, making her the queen consort. During the wedding banquet, she assassinated her new husband with poison and was proclaimed the sovereign of Assyria. The people of Assyria whispered that she had killed King Ninus to avenge her first husband Onnes, but accepted her rule nonetheless. Semiramis reigned over Assyria ambitiously, using poison to assassinate or psychologically decimate political opponents and allies she was suspicious of. Yet she was also highly cautious and mistrustful of others, often waiting for her opponents to act before she made her first move.

Semiramis ruled for several decades, ordering the construction of several monuments and launching several expeditions during that time. She also bore at least one child, a son. Eventually, Semiramis died under contested circumstances. Some believe she was ironically poisoned to death by her own son, and some thought she turned into a dove after willingly giving up her sovereignty. Whatever the case, Semiramis was remembered to history as a calculating witch with ruthless ambition. She was considered the "World's Oldest Poisoner," as her murder of King Ninus was the oldest recorded murder by poisoning in the world.

The Throne of Heroes[]

In recognition of her fame, the World itself sent her soul to the Throne of Heroes that lied beyond space and time so that if the need arose the Counter Force (Earth's natural defense system) could summon her as a Heroic Spirit to protect the planet. Heroic Spirits were entities formed from the stories and histories observed by the collective consciousness of humanity. The identity of a Heroic Spirit, referred to as a Spirit Origin, was formed out of a mixture of a figure's actual deeds and the deeds attributed to them by myth and legend. Typically, the more revered or famous a figure was directly contributed to their power as a Heroic Spirit.

As dictated by how she was remembered in history, Semiramis was a cold-hearted, prideful, and cunning Heroic Spirit who specialized in assassination, poison, and magecraft. It was possible for human mages to summon Heroic Spirits under the unique circumstances of a "Holy Grail War." Holy Grail Wars traditionally consisted of seven mages battling each other for the right to own the Holy Grail, an omnipotent magical relic capable of granting any wish. Each mage, referred to as a "Master," would summon a Heroic Spirit using a ritual which required a catalyst in the form of an artefact connected in some way to the hero they sought to summon.

In the hopes that they could receive a wish alongside their summoner, the summoned Heroic Spirit would form a contract with their Master and become a "Servant." When summoned as a Servant by a human mage rather than the Counter Force itself, Heroic Spirits had to rely on the limited magical energy supply of their Master to fuel their ethereal existences. Additionally, each of the seven summoned Servants had to be classified into one of seven pre-prepared classes based on their Spirit Origin. The standard classes typically fielded in Holy Grail Wars were "Archer," "Assassin," "Berserker," "Caster," "Lancer," "Rider," and "Saber."

Personality[]

Assassin is one of the Servants and masterminds of the Red Faction. A peerless beauty who wears a black dress. She refers to herself quite haughtily, but she is actually a comparatively straightforward person.

Her True Name is Semiramis, the legendary empress of ancient Assyria who is called the world’s oldest poisoner. Though her class is Assassin, she actually has the traits and abilities of the Caster class as well. She likes decadent luxury, but that does not mean that she hates the simple things in life. She also possesses a strange anger, and finally, her chest was pained by a feeling that she tasted for the first time since she was born—a feeling that could be called heartache.

She has the ability to create and command the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, an enormous flying fortress that enhances her abilities. She is a master poisoner from being known as the world's oldest poisoner and is knowledgeable about Magecraft.
