~ Astarion Ancunín's introduction

Astarion Ancunín is one of the main protagonists of the 2023 fantasy video game Baldur's Gate III. He is the titular main protagonist of his storyline the Pale Elf.

Astarion is a High-Elf rogue who is also a vampire who once served under Cazador Szarr, a High-Elf Vampire Lord in Baldur's Gate, serving heavy abuse (physically and mentally) by his master. Following being captured and infected by the Mind Flayers, Astarion joins a group of adventurers who are also infected with tadpoles in hopes of using his new found powers to kill Cazador as revenge for the abuse he endured and finally be free of him.

He is voiced by Neil Newbon, who also voiced Elijah Kamski and Gavin Reed in Detroit: Become Human and Karl Heisenberg in Resident Evil Village.

Personality[]

Astarion is very charming, eloquent, cunning, witty, sarcastic, and practical who tends to be snarky with people. He is largely apathetic toward the feelings of others and has little interest in helping them for no reward, as he feels that if he didn't get help, nobody else should. He also holds prejudices against the Gur people (since they were responsible for causing his transformation) and small races such as gnomes. Although despite his apathetic and uninterested nature, he has rare occasions of wanting to help someone (even if it's for his own self-worth). While he tends to be snarky and sometimes rude towards his companions, he does have some sense of care and love for them, genuinely viewing them as his friends.

But underneath his charming and apathetic persona, having been forced to be out for himself and having felt abandoned by the world and its heroes, Astarion is also very bitter, cynical, self-centered, manipulative, distrustful, prejudiced, and vengeful. Another of his flawed personality traits is also very fear-motivated and has a low self-worth, despite his confident and arrogant persona. He will attempt to manipulate others with sex to get them on his side so that he has protection from Cazador, as he believes sex is all he is good for and it is one of few ways he knows how to form relationships with other people. He is also willing to do almost anything to gain power or advantage so that he can secure his own safety and avoid being under Cazador's control again, even if it means trampling over others or doing something he finds personally distasteful. Although, he has reservations about sacrificing his bodily autonomy even if it means he can gain an advantageous power.

However, as the story progresses, Astarion can develop and change his personality depending on how he is guided during his questline.

  • If Astarion is guided down a good path where his fears, beliefs, and unhealthy behaviors, are not wholly validated, he will grow into his best self by beginning to deconstruct his cynical worldview, learning to truly value and stand up for himself, showing empathy and care toward others, reconciling with those he has hurt in the past, developing a healthy relationship with sex and romance, forming genuine bonds with other people that he trusts, breaking the cycle of abuse, and healing from his trauma. He even encourages the Dark Urge, who is Bhaalspawn, to not give in to his urges and become a better person just like he did for him.
  • But, if Astarion is led down a evil path where his behaviors, fears, and beliefs are validated and encouraged, he will instead become the very worst version of himself, a fearful, power-hungry, and abusive man who has repressed his trauma and continued the abuse cycle he was trapped in. He is even compared to the likes of Cazador, something he angrily does not like.
