~ Astarion Ancunín's introduction

Astarion Ancunín is one of the main protagonists of the 2023 fantasy video game Baldur's Gate III. He is the titular main protagonist of his storyline the Pale Elf.

Astarion is a High-Elf rogue who is also a vampire who once served under Cazador Szarr, a High-Elf Vampire Lord in Baldur's Gate, serving heavy abuse (physically and mentally) by his master. Following being captured and infected by the Mind Flayers, Astarion joins a group of adventurers who are also infected with tadpoles in hopes of using his new found powers to kill Cazador as revenge for the abuse he endured and finally be free of him.

He is voiced by Neil Newbon, who also voiced Elijah Kamski and Gavin Reed in Detroit: Become Human and Karl Heisenberg in Resident Evil Village.

Personality[]

Astarion is very charming, eloquent, cunning, witty, sarcastic, and practical who tends to be snarky with people. He is largely apathetic toward the feelings of others and has little interest in helping them for no reward, as he feels that if he didn't get help, nobody else should. He also holds prejudices against the Gur people (since they were responsible for causing his transformation) and small races such as gnomes. Although despite his apathetic and uninterested nature, he has rare occasions of wanting to help someone (even if it's for his own self-worth). While he tends to be snarky and sometimes rude towards his companions, he does have some sense of care and love for them, genuinely viewing them as his friends.

But underneath his charming and apathetic persona, having been forced to be out for himself and having felt abandoned by the world and its heroes, Astarion is also very bitter, cynical, self-centered, manipulative, distrustful, prejudiced, and vengeful. Another of his flawed personality traits is also very fear-motivated and has a low self-worth, despite his confident and arrogant persona. He will attempt to manipulate others with sex to get them on his side so that he has protection from Cazador, as he believes sex is all he is good for and it is one of few ways he knows how to form relationships with other people. He is also willing to do almost anything to gain power or advantage so that he can secure his own safety and avoid being under Cazador's control again, even if it means trampling over others or doing something he finds personally distasteful. Although, he has reservations about sacrificing his bodily autonomy even if it means he can gain an advantageous power.

However, as the story progresses, Astarion's display of character can change depending on how he is guided during his questline.

  • If Astarion is dissuaded from becoming a Vampire Ascendant, he adapts to the life in the shadows, becoming an assassin or a leader to other Vampire Spawns, should they survive. A possible target to monster hunters, he can only rely on his cunning and skills to see the other day. Ruthless at times, Astarion is more than capable of forming personal connections to others. The inability to walk in the sun deeply upsets him, but he takes solace in the newly found freedom, possibly seeking for a cure for his vampirism.
  • If Astarion is helped to become a Vampire Ascendant, he manages to claim the power he sought and is finally free of the grievances his kind is known to suffer from. All mortal sensations are now open to Astarion, and he can share them with a Dark Consort of his own. Completely independent from the party by the virtue of his elevated abilities, Astarion still helps his companions to defeat the mindflayers. In the epilogue, the player learns that Astarion is plotting to take over the city. Having regained his status as an Upper-City Nobleman, Astarion throws many soirées and banquets for the high society, gaining influence. His ambitions are growing by the day, and he intends to rule the Baldur's Gate covertly.
