You naive Queen's lapbug. Between us, there can be no compromise. But you shall have an honorable fight! Do your worst!
~ Astotheles taunting Kabbu.

Astotheles is a minor antagonist of the 2019 role-playing video game Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. He is the leader of the bandits of the Lost Sands, who lives by ironic code of honor.

Biography[]

Astotheles is first encountered during Chapter 4: Mysterious Lost Sands. He and his bandits made a deal with the Wasp Kingdom to kidnap Team Snakemouth and hand them over to Wasps in exchange for a huge sum of money. Possessing one half of the Sand Castle Key, which is required to obtain the final artifact, and knowing that Team Snakemouth is looking for the artifacts, he sells them the key for his own hideout in the bottom of the Defiant Root well, while his bandits set the ambush for them, putting the key piece on the pedestal while they all would attack them en-masse, take their possessions and lock them in their prison.

However, despite the fact that the bandits successfully captured Team Snakemouth, the Wasps refused to uphold their end of the bargain and denied them money. Once Team Snakemouth escapes the prison and encounters him, Astotheles unhoods himself and reveals the intentions behind their kidnapping and how he was blinded by Wasps' slimy ways. Team Snakemouth attempts to reason with him, but Astotheles refuses to help those who serve Queen Elizant II, referring to her as "the Ant Witch", but challenges them to an honorable battle. Once defeated, he then pleads to Team Snakemouth to end his life, but instead was shown mercy. Once the bandits arrive, they try to defeat Team Snakemouth to avenge their boss, but Astotheles refused, since they bet their honor in battle, and he lost.

Knowing that Team Snakemouth opposes the Wasp Kingdom, he demands them to deliver justice to them for breaking their pact and hands them over the half of the Sand Castle Key. Repaying his debt, he then demands Team Snakemouth to leave, or they'll be thrown back into the prison. When his room is revisited, Astotheles disappears, but his diary can be read, where he writes about how, after being shown mercy, he got second thoughts about his thieving ways and went away to rethink his actions, leaving the hideout in charge of his most trusted advisor, promising to return one day.

After the Wasp King's defeat, Astotheles can be encountered during the final ceremony on the rooftop of the red house (which, optionally, could be bought by Team Snakemouth). When talked to, he asks Team Snakemouth to keep his presence a secret, which Team Snakemouth agrees to, but "just this once".

Bestiary Entries[]

The leader of the Lost Sands' bandits, Astotheles lives by an ironic code of honor. He vanishes and appears without notice, his every mission dedicated to improve life in his hideout. It is said he wishes to establish his own country. But with the list of his crimes only increasing, this becomes unlikelier every day. But at the end of the day, the love and loyalty of his bandit family is enough for him.

What mastery of the blade, even with just one arm! It reminds me of Maki's strength. With lightning speed he crushes our items... We must make this a quick bout!
~ Kabbu's spy notes on Astotheles.
You crook! What if I'd never found my Beemerang!? And what's with ruining my items? I don't care if you're the boss, you're gonna go down!
~ Vi's spy notes on Astotheles.
Honor... What a joke of a request, coming from one who leads thieves. Break our items if you want. You're going to pay for imprisoning us all the same!
~ Leif's spy notes on Astotheles.

Diary[]

Day XXX. An unprepared moth was spotted near the sandpits. He carried quite a few berries. Although I truly pitied him, the funds will let us get through this month smoothly.
Day YYZ. The flowers bloomed in our garden. Our hideout comes closer to becoming a home.
Day ZZZ. I was shown mercy today. Mercy I have not shown others... I need to think. I've left the hideout in charge of my trusted advisor. But I'll return.
~ Astotheles' diary

Trivia[]

  • Astotheles is comparable to Moustafa from the original Paper Mario. Both are honorable thieves who live in the desert and give heroes the key that is required to unearth the buried ancient temple. However, Moustafa never fought Mario and his party and remained an ally from start to finish, while Astotheles had to be defeated in an honorable combat before allying himself with Team Snakemouth.
  • According to the developers, Astotheles lost an arm while protecting the Bandit Hideout from the Dune Scorpion, and his resentment of Queen Elizant II stems from her constantly rejecting his and his bandits' efforts to establish their own independent country in the Lost Sands.
