The Astra Militarum also more commonly known as the Imperial Guard, are recurring protagonists in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. They serve as the primary ground forces of the Imperium of Man.
The Astra Militarum, a force of either countless billions or trillions of soldiers and a diverse collection of regiments, represents the Imperium's first line of defense, often deployed when local planetary forces falter.
Supplemented by a massive arsenal of armored vehicles that form the spearhead of their attacks, they are also tasked with guarding strategically vital locations and frequently serve in defensive capacities.
Enduring constant warfare amidst a relentlessly dangerous universe, they rely on overwhelming numbers, massed firepower, devastating artillery bombardments, and powerful armored and aerial assaults to secure humanity's survival.
This strategy has earned them the title of "Hammer of the Emperor," reflecting their capacity to unleash immense force, in contrast to the focused surgical precision of the Space Marines, known as the "Scalpel of the Emperor."
Despite the lack of standardized uniforms and command structures across its various regiments, discipline and loyalty are maintained by mandatory commissars, who are tasked with monitoring each unit. The Cadian Shock Troops, renowned for their effectiveness, have inadvertently set a standard for many units, with their equipment and uniform adopted by many.
