“ | 'm saying you were right. The Night Mother was right. The old ways... they guided the Dark Brotherhood for centuries. I was a fool to oppose them. And to prove my... sincerity, I have prayed for a contract. You lead this Family now. I give you the Blade of Woe, so that you can see it through. You must kill... Me. | „ |
~ Astrid to the Dragonborn, moments before their death (determinant). |
Astrid is an antagonist in the 2011 video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, serving the secondary antagonist in the Dark Brotherhood questline.
Astrid is the sanctuary leader of the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Falkreath, and can recruit the Dragonborn into her ranks if the player starts the quest "Innocence Lost".
She was voiced by Cindy Robinson.
Biography[]
Background[]
According to Astrid, she killed her uncle when he made advances toward her and started to develop a love for killing. Once a young woman, she joined the Dark Brotherhood and became its leader at the Falkreath sanctuary. She also married fellow brotherhood member Arnbjorn.
Skyrim[]
When the Dragonborn first meets Astrid, it is after the quest Innocence Lost, where the Dragonborn kills Grelod the Kind, a contract for the Dark Brotherhood. He/She awakes in an abandoned shack, where Astrid has kidnapped three victims, giving the Dragonborn the choice on which to kill. No matter what he/she choses, he/she is accepted into the sanctuary as an assassin. After the first few contracts for the Dragonborn, Cicero has moved into the sanctuary, also bringing the corpse of the Night Mother, the Dark Brotherhood's founder. She requests the Dragonborn listens to Cicero's conversation with the Night Mother because she is suspicious about who he is talking to, which the Dragonborn finds out he/she is the Listener while doing, which is a person who can hear the Night Mother.
The Lister receives a contract from the Night Mother herself as well, which Astrid is hesitant about, but ends up accepting. The contract, from Amaund Motierre was to plan out a series of murders leading up to the murder of the emporer. She follows these murders, but ends up selling the Listener out to Commander Maro, a Penitus Oculatus agent working to bring down the Dark Brotherhood, in exchange for political immunity. Maro, after ambushing the Listener, which he thinks kills him/her, betrays Astrid, ordering an attack on the Falkreath Sanctuary, which killed a majority of the Dark Brotherhood and severely injured her. She felt deeply remorseful for this, and performed the Black Sacrament, a ritual performed to create a contract for the brotherhood, on herself. Afterwards, she is killed by the Listener.
Alternatively, the Dragonborn can also refuse to join the Dark Brotherhood, simply attacking her upon waking up. Afterwards, he/she can notify Maro, then destroy the Dark Brotherhood himself/herself.
