Asuka Matsuda is a main character and one of the main antagonists in the horror series One Missed Call (in Japanese: 着信アリ Chakushin Ari).
She was portrayed by Japanese actress Maki Horikita.
Biography[]
Asuka was a high school student and had a friend named Emiri Kusama. However, when Emiri was bullied by their class, Asuka stood up for her and was viciously bullied instead. Emiri betrayed her and turned her back on her, in fear of being bullied again, thus leaving her all alone to face the abuse. Eventually, Asuka could not take it any longer and hanged herself at their school, causing her to fall into a deep coma and her spirit to leave her unconscious body. She then allies with undead little girl Mimiko Mizunuma and other spirits and opts to take revenge on her tormentors with their help and support. However, she is discovered in the last moment by school janitor, survives and is taken to a hospital. However, with her body still in coma and her spirit roaming free, she appears in her apartment and sits in front of her computer screen, with her class photo on it.
She starts executing her vengeance several months later when her class goes on a trip to Korea and chooses, who's to die, by clicking on the person on a class photo. She starts sending them the cursed messages through the phone, like Mimiko and other ghosts always did. Those who get the message are killed by ghosts soon after, however, they could re-send it to someone else, thus giving their fate to them and sparing themselves for some time. However, Asuka and the others had no intention of leaving any survivors. First, they kill Azusa Kuzunoki, one of the girls who bullied her most, who Mimiko viciously attacks and drags though the streets, before hanging. Then they kill Teruya by strangling and electrocuting him with an electric cord. After this, when the class wonders, what is going on, Mari, Emiri's friend, who didn't bully Asuka, but rather ignored it, likely out of fear of being targeted too, suspects that it's Asuka's curse and that she might be behind it. They suspect that she might've died in hospital.
Soon after, Asuka and others kill Mizue, who Mimiko grabs by the leg, drags under the bed and twists and breaks her body, before stuffing it in the closet. Around this time, Emiri begins calling Asuka to find out her involvement. However, Asuka is reluctant to answer and, for some time, just quietly sits on her bed, looking at the ringing phone, wondering aloud to herself, should she bother to answer or not. Later, Mimiko kills their teacher, Kibe, by toring his heart out of his body. After this, Asuka kills Takehiro by choking him with chicken feathers. After this, they kill Akaike Toru. All this time, Asuka watches it happen through the monitor and laughs. After several more attempts, Asuka finally answers Emiri's calls and ambiguously confirms that she is behind the deaths, by telling her that those who prey on others, will inevitably become prey themselves in the end too. Emiri also calls the hospital to check on Asuka and is informed that she is still in her room. Later, Emiri and her friend, Jinu, uncover the story about Mimiko and she calls Asuka again and asks her, if she knows her. However, Asuka ignores the question and demands her to give the phone to Mari. Emiri complies and Asuka sends Mari the message and taunts her by saying that everyone who picks on others, as well as those who watch it, are one and the same and should all be held accountable and sent to Hell. However, when Mimiko menacingly approaches Mari in the hallway, she panicks and sends the message to Minori, who Mimiko then kills instead. After this, Asuka calls Emiri and apathetically says that it's a pity and that she had hoped Mari would send it to her.
In the end, Emiri calls and finally apologizes to Asuka for ignoring and not helping her, Mimiko briefly appears in Asuka's place and she hangs up. Eventually, Asuka finally returns to her body and wakes up, becoming living human again and losing her spirit powers and connections. However, it does not fase her much and she leaves the hospital and makes her way to her home. She comes to her apartment and sees her computer with a class photo and a moving mouse on it. Emiri's computer connects with Asuka's and the two have a conversation where they aplogize to each other and Asuka begins to feel guilt and blame herself, realising she killed all those people. However, she also admits that she hated them and asks, why she had to die. She also says that Emiri led her to it. After this, Asuka tries to stop Mimiko from killing Emiri, however, she grabs Asuka's hand and teleports them to different places at their school. There Asuka is haunted by the spirits of her victims, including Azusa, Teruya, Mizue and Minori.
Eventually, she runs in the classroom where Mimiko herself appears to her and persuades her to commit suicide together with her by jumping from the school balcony in a fiery pit that has appeared in the courtyard below. Asuka approaches, hugs her and agrees, saying, "Let's put an end to it". Emiri finds them and tries to save Asuka and convince her to live and recalls their promise to visit the sea, but Asuka, driven by pain and regret, is not swayed and apologises that she wasn't able to keep the promise. However, Emiri asks Mimiko to kill her instead and Mimiko seemingly agrees, to Asuka's horror, she sends the message to Emiri and gives her the candy. She takes it and prepares to put it in her mouth. Seeing it, Asuka begs her not to do it, to send the message to her and tries to stop her. At this time, Asuka's computer overloads and explodes and Mimiko disappears, returning Emily and Asuka to their previous locations, after which Asuka wakes up in her apartment and looks around briefly. In the end, in spite of being persistently suicidal, Asuka remains, as the only survivor, while Emiri becomes catatonic, leaving her to be cared by still somewhat regretful Asuka. Some time later, Asuka takes a catatonic Emiri in a wheelchair to the sea, like they once promised each other, where she gives her her scarf and sits down near her.
