~ Athena revealing her true heartless nature to Lore, also her most famous quote. |
Athena is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Wrath) of Alexandra Bracken's 2021 Greek Mythology-inspired novel Lore.
Biography[]
Seven years before the events of the book, Athena slaughtered and butchered Lore's family because she stole Athena's Aegis shield.
In the present, Athena stalked and followed Lore for many years, trying to find her but unable to due to Hermes' protective spell over her. After using her sister Artemis to wound her so she could trick Lore into helping her, Athena betrayed her sister and worked alongside Castor, the man who Artemis hated more than anyone, to try and find her Aegis, and assisted in Artemis' death to get her out of the way.
After Lore learned that Athena was the one who killed her family, Athena tortured Lore to try and make her give up the location of the Aegis, but Lore stayed strong and didn't reveal it.
Athena eventually turns to try and manipulate Wrath into the two of them working together so they can try and end the Aegis, but Lore shows up and reveals to Wrath the truth behind Athena's actions. Once Wrath realizes Athena is a liar, they fight, and try to kill each other. Athena decapitates Wrath, but not before he poisons her.
As Athena starts to slowly die, she tries to reach for the Aegis, only for Lore to stab a dagger in her heart so that she can claim Athena's powers and heal herself. Athena dies, and whether or not she ascends back to Olympus like Apollo did is unknown.
