Atsushi Kanamoto (in Japanese: 金本 敦, Kanamoto Atsushi), better known by his online handle Johnny Black (in Japanese: ジョニー・ブラック, Jonī Burakku), is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Shouichi Shinkawa) of the Sword Art Online franchise.
He is one of the ten thousand players who were trapped in Sword Art Online, and a member of the infamous guild Laughing Coffin.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Ryota Ohsaka. In English, he was voiced by Alejandro Saab.
Appearance[]
Like the other members of Laughing Coffin, he wears a hooded cloak of dark color covering his face one, and a black mask resembling a sack with holes cut for eyes.
In the real world, Atsushi is a tall young man with a uneven tangle of silver hair, beady irises, thin cheeks covered by a stubby beard, and silver earrings on his ears. He wears a thick silver necklace, a discolored black T-shirt with leather pants of the same color and high laced boots.
Personality[]
Atsushi is defined by his sadism, preferring to torture and humiliate his victims before killing them. For example, after having captured Schmitt, Caynz, and Yolko on the Hill of the Cross, he suggested to XaXa and PoH forcing the captives into a fight-to-the death, with the last man standing being declared winner and given freedom. However, PoH revealed that he had killed the winner of such a game the last time anyway.
Biography[]
Aincrad Arc[]
In April 2024, Johnny Black, along with PoH and XaXa, was hired by Grimlock to assassinate Schmitt, Yolko, and Caynz to prevent anyone from learning the truth behind the murder of Griselda, the leader of the Golden Apple guild. While Schmitt was being confronted by Caynz and Yolko at the Hill of the Cross, the three would be poisoned without realizing before it was too late. As Johnny celebrates crippling the three (with XaXa holding Yolko and Caynz at swordpoint), he excitedly suggests forcing their targets into a fight to kill each other upon PoH contemplating how they could derive amusement from their prey. However, PoH reminds him the last time they did that they killed the last man standing anyway, with Johnny complaining as a response. Before any of the Laughing Coffin trio could kill the three, Kirito intervenes. As Kirito was prepared to stall for time until reinforcements could arrive, the Laughing Coffin trio withdrew from the area. Later on in August, the SAO players launched a raid on the Laughing Coffin compound to destroy them. During the battle, Johnny was captured and imprisoned along with eleven other members. However, he would go on to survive and clear the game and return to the real world.
Phantom Bullet[]
As the Shinkawa brothers further developed the Death Gun murders plot, Shouichi needed a new accomplice. Shouichi would invite Atsushi to assist him and his brother with their plan to kill prominent Gun Gale Online players in real life in a way that it would appear their targets had been killed from within the game. During the second BoB tournament, Atsushi would break into the houses of Pale Rider and Garrett and injected them with a lethal dose of succinylcholine at the same time as Shouichi's GGO avatar Sterben shoots them with his pistol in-game. After Kirito foils the Death Gun murders plot, Atsushi would escape with one last syringe of succinylcholine before the police raided his apartment.
Alicization[]
Several months after the Death Gun's defeat, after evading the authorities, in June 2026, Atsushi finally located Kazuto and Asuna as they were walking to the latter's house in an attempt to ambush them. However, Kazuto found out that they were being followed at. After his initial plan of ambush failed, Atsushi would confront the two, as Kazuto ends up subduing Atsushi by stabbing in the thigh of his umbrella, while he injects Kazuto with the succinylcholine that causes cardiac arrest that leads to brain damage and a coma.
Trivia[]
- While in the light novel, it was revealed that Atsushi was arrested, his fate in the anime is left unknown. As he was never seen again after the fight with Kazuto.
- Atsushi's real life design was very likely inspired by real-life serial killer Richard Ramirez.
