Atticus Shane or also known as Professor Atticus is a major recurring character in The Vampire Diaries franchise, who acts as one of the main villains of the fourth season along with Silas in The Vampire Diaries series.

Personality[]
Shane presented himself as a passionate academic who had traveled the world exploring his interest in the occult. He used his charisma and modesty to manipulate vulnerable people and distract those who were suspicious of his true intentions. Despite having perpetrated terrible massacres, his motivation stemmed from deep sadness over the loss of his wife and child, something anyone could understand. However, his lack of control between pain and madness did not allow him to win sympathy.
Appearance[]
Atticus was of average height and build, with dark brown hair and greenish eyes. Despite having an attractive appearance, he can quickly change into a maniacal and obsessive look when he approaches his target. Although he is in good physical shape, he probably won't win a physical fight and prefers to use his mind to achieve his goals.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Atticus Shane lost his wife and son in a tragic accident. Desperate to get them back, he came to the island in search of the well that would allow him to see the dead. Upon finding him, he spoke to Caitlin and explained that by raising Silas, she and her son could be revived. This is his ultimate goal and the reason behind all of his current actions.
Season 4[]
Shane is a teacher who talks about witches, vampires, and doppelgängers in his class. He also appears at the murder house party, where he gives Bonnie some of her grandmother's things and talks to her about different ways to practice magic. He later reveals that he has the Hunter's Mark symbol in his office and that he sent Connor to Mystic Falls to kill vampires.
Later, Shane offers Connor information about his tattoo in exchange for him continuing to kill vampires. He also tries to hypnotize Bonnie to help her get over her fear of her magic. Shane then approaches Jeremy and Matt with April and tells them about artifacts. At a conference, he talks about Silas and Qetsiyah, mentioning Silas' possible return and the chaos he would bring. Shane says that Qetsiyah is powerful, but nothing compared to Silas.
Later, Damon and Bonnie question Shane about the hunter's mark, and he explains the legend of potentials. Later, in her office, Bonnie asks how she knows so much and Shane tells her that he is her greatest ally and that she will need her help when Jeremy completes his mark. He tells her that she needs to trust him.
At the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, Shane looks up the judges, then talks to Damon. Damon asks if he has a name for another member of the Five, but Shane can't help him. Damon also mentions that there are no vows of mercy for April Young, whose father recently died, and asks Shane how he convinced Pastor Young to kill all those people. Shane is shocked that Damon thinks he's behind it and leaves to join the other judges.
Later, Damon pressures Shane for the name of another hunter, threatening to kill him if he doesn't reveal it. Shane tells him that he is sealed with a spell that only Bonnie can perform, and asks who he trusts the most. Damon lets Shane go, who tells him that 5 seconds of him are seeing that he needs him alive. Later, Shane talks to Hayley in her office and tells her that she didn't father another hybrid.
Shane finds Hayley in her office and tells her that he will give her information about her birth parents after she unhooks 12 hybrids. During girls' night out, Bonnie reveals that Shane calls the magic he is teaching her "Expression". Later, when Hayley informs him that she has 12 unsir hybrids, Shane tells her that her parents are dead but he can make her see them again and says "We're the beginning."
Elena invites Shane to the Gilbert Lake house to help Jeremy with his hunter training. Shane explains that the hunter's mark can be a curse and that the only way to be free of it is to kill a vampire and embrace her true self. Jeremy is reluctant to accept the idea and says hurtful things to Elena, prompting her to leave the house. However, Shane tells Jeremy that he has to be honest with himself and admit that her sister is a vampire and he needs her help to protect her. Eventually, Jeremy accepts the training and works on controlling his fear and emotions as he hunts vampires with Damon.
Shane shares his personal story with Elena and reveals that he has also loved someone too much. Later, Damon interrupts their conversation, threatening to kill Shane, but Shane tells them that he can lead them to the cure for vampirism if they dig up Silas, and when Jeremy's mark is complete, he will have the map containing the spell to unearth. to Silas. Shane refuses to reveal Silas's location to stay alive, but promises to lead them there.
Damon tells Elena his theory that Shane killed Pastor Young and the other council members. Later, Bonnie sees Kol and follows him to Shane's office. Kol kidnaps Shane and Bonnie runs to get help.
Kol and Rebekah take Shane to Mystic Falls High School to tell them where the cure is. When Shane refuses to talk, Kol begins to choke him. Shane finally admits that he knows where Silas is buried and that he is responsible for the death of the Council. Meanwhile, Bonnie arrives at the school and finds out what is happening. She casts a protection spell on Shane. Kol kills Shane after hearing his confession, and Rebekah lashes out at him for ruining her chance to find the cure. Shane then reveals that he was faking his death.
Shane returns to his office and is met by Bonnie, who is furious. He warns her that Kol will be trouble and she tells him that she doesn't want to do black magic anymore. Shane explains that the "Expression" is not black magic, but a way to do unlimited magic without controlling it. He assures her that she is the key to everything and that she will not let anything bad happen to him. Shane then teaches Bonnie how to control her new powers. However, their conversation is interrupted by Sheriff Forbes and Mayor Hopkins, who inform them of the city council's death. Shane is taken to the Mystic Falls police station and questioned to no avail. Finally, he admits to orchestrating the barn explosion, and explains to Bonnie that the murder of 11 people was actually a ritual to resurrect Silas, who will bring back all the dead.
Bonnie confronts Shane about his role in the death of the town hall and the massacre at the barn. Shane tries to calm her down and offers her information about her grandmother. However, when he begins to put her down, she attacks him with magic, but Bonnie manages to calm her down using the methods she taught him before her. Shane is released from jail and takes Elena, Damon, Stefan, Bonnie, Jeremy, and Rebekah to the island where Silas is entombed. There, Shane reveals more about the history of Silas, Qetsiyah, and the cure, as well as the existence of a magical well. However, Damon and Bonnie question Shane's motivations and question him.
After escaping with Silas' headstone, Shane meets up with Massak, who has kidnapped Jeremy and Bonnie. Together they reach Silas' tomb in an underground cave. Shane reveals that the tombstone contains a small amount of Qetsiyah's blood and leads them to a circle carved into the rock floor. Bonnie uses her magic to trigger a cave-in and a rock falls on Shane's leg. As he tries to venture into Silas's grave, she begs them to help him up, but they leave him behind.
After Shane is abandoned by Bonnie and Jeremy, Stefan finds him injured and Shane pleads with him to feed him vampire blood to heal himself. Stefan refuses and considers Shane dead due to his guilt in the deaths of innocent people. Shane has a vision of his dead wife, who assures him that Silas will heal him when he is released and that he will not give up.

Bonnie Bennet[]
Bonnie met Shane when she found out that he had taken the Occult Studies class that her grandmother used to teach. Shane quickly became Bonnie's mentor and friend, helping her regain her trust and teaching her everything she knew about magic. Although they developed a friendship, Shane was actually using Bonnie for his own purposes, which included freeing Silas from his grave. Bonnie was a key part of Shane's plans and he manipulated her into helping him in his search for her. Unfortunately, despite all his efforts, Shane was unable to save the family from him, and he died shortly after Silas was resurrected.
Connor Jordan[]
Connor was a hunter and a member of the Brotherhood of Five who worked for Shane. Although it is unknown how they met, it is known that Shane provided her with information about the hunter's mark in exchange for her working for him. Shane sent Connor to Mystic Falls to hunt down vampires and grow the brand, but he was killed by Elena before he could complete it.
Hayley Marshall[]
Hayley Marshall and Shane are seen talking together at the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, while Damon and Tyler look on. Later, Hayley receives a message from Tyler that Kimberly had managed to break Klaus's paternal bond, and she tells Shane in her office. Shane comments that his goals are close to being achieved, suggesting that they are working together on a secret plan.

Damon mistrusts Shane and thinks he's orchestrating something dark. Damon discovers that Shane has ties to Pastor Young, who was killed in an explosion on his farm along with eleven other people, prompting him to accuse Shane of orchestrating his death.
