Imbecile! Because of you, i lost my saloon, and you know it's absolutely necessary to my plans!
~ August Oyster berating Baby Sam for losing in the arm wrestling, losing ownership of his saloon in the process.

August Oyster is the main antagonist of the 1967 Lucky Luke comic book Calamity Jane.

He is the former owner of the Saloon Hotel of El Plomo who attempts to smuggle weapons to the Apaches using his own saloon, with the help of his associate, Baby Sam. He is interrupted when Calamity Jane and Luke arrive in the saloon. With Calamity Jane trying to take over the saloon, he sends in his associate for a duel of arm wrestling, only for Calamity Jane to win the match as well as ownership of the saloon.

Wanting to get his saloon back at all costs, he uses multiple tactics to attempt at getting Calamity Jane and Luke out of town. Later in the story, his true motives are revealed when Luke finds boxes of ammunition inside a secret cave that is connected to the saloon.

Biography[]

August Oyster first appears when Calamity Jane and Lucky Luke enter the saloon-hotel of El Plomo, asking what is going on (as Calamity Jane was causing noise by shooting everywhere after she was denied entry for being a lady). He introduces himself as the owner of the saloon, saying he doesn't like loud noises. As Calamity Jane asks for a room, August tells her that all rooms were full, leading to Calamity Jane threatening him with her shotgun. Finally accepting to have a room for Calamity Jane, he asks Luke if he wants a room as well, but Luke decides to sleep at the Sheriff's office, leaving Calamity Jane with them.

Later at evening, Luke sees Calamity Jane telling stories to the crowd, which doesn't please August Oyster, who orders them to leave. However, instead of leaving, Jane decides to have an arm wrestling against him in order to take ownership of the saloon. Reluctant at first, he accepts the deal, but as he has a weakness in his arm, he sends in Baby Sam, his associate. During the match, Baby Sam seems to have the upper hand at first, with August Oyster saying that it is all over for her and that it is a good thing that she is a woman, as she would have been covered in tar and feathers. This, however, motivates Calamity Jane, who quickly overpowers Baby Sam, burning his hand and winning the duel. Disappointed by this, August attempts to murder Calamity Jane by pulling out his hidden gun, but Luke stops him at gun point, saying that Calamity Jane had won fair and square.

Later, August berates Baby Sam for making him lose his saloon thanks to Calamity Jane, saying that it is absolutely necessary to his plans. He then notices that a delivery was being sent to them, leading to it being delayed due to Calamity Jane owning the saloon and Luke still being in town. He then decides to send Baby Sam and his gang outside the saloon in order to catch Calamity Jane when the saloon is empty. When Calamity Jane serves crumpets to the customers, they run out of the saloon, allowing Baby Sam to get inside the saloon and shoot all over the saloon, breaking everything. The plan is thwarted by both Calamity Jane and Lucky Luke, who both shoot at them, causing them to leave the saloon.

August is disappointed at Baby Sam for his failure, as he really wanted to have Calamity Jane out of the saloon. At this point, he gets visited by Gomino, the chief of the Apaches, who tells him that the Apaches did not receive any weapons that were promised last night. August tells him that he had issues(which are Calamity Jane and Lucky Luke), promising to resume deliveries. As Gomino warns him if he doesn't bring them weapons, he will be considered as a treacherous coyote. Later at night, he sends Baby Sam at the saloon again, attempting to burn down the saloon, but is stopped by Luke, who beats him up, only to be interrupted by Calamity Jane, who quickly recognizes him. Unfortunately, a fire spreads around the saloon due to Jane's crumpets being left in the oven for too long. Early in the morning, the fire is extinguished.

August then gets a brillant idea, which is sending the Ladies' Guild in an attempt to have the saloon destroyed (as they are against alcohol), but Calamity Jane manages to strike up a deal with them, with the president allowing to take a test to enter the guild so she can stay in town. This angers August, who stomps his hat in fury for having his plan foiled once more. He then goes back inside his hotel to take a whiskey, only to encounter Gomino again, who reminds him of the smuggling, giving him time until the next night to smuggle weapons to the Apaches.

He then calls for Baby Sam, planning to get inside their secret tunnel to smuggle the weapons, which fortunately hasn't been discovered by Luke yet. However, all of the barrels that were supposed to contain the weapons were empty, which makes them worried. Little do they know, however, is that Luke actually found out about this earlier and caught them in the act, now knowing why August Oyster wanted Calamity Jane out of town. August then begs Lucky Luke to let them smuggle the weapons, as he and Baby Sam would both get attacked for their treachery, but to no avail as both of them are then locked in prison for their crimes.

August Oyster and Baby are then taken away to custody by the United States Cavalry.

Trivia[]

  • Due to American censorship in the Hanna-Barbera adaptation of the comic, August Oyster doesn't smuggle his weapons with the Apaches. Instead, he smuggles with a duo of bandits.
