Augustin IV, also known as Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, was the guildleader of the Azorious Senate and major antagonist of the Ravnica block of Magic: the Gathering. His guild was formed by the sphinx Planeswalker Azor and was responsible for creating the laws that help Ravnica function and keep the ten guilds from waging war on each other. As the Grand Arbiter, he has the ultimate say over all the laws of Ravnica. When the Guilpact was broken, he wanted to exploit the crisis to conquer the entire plane.
History[]
For most of the Ravnica block, Augustin appeared to be a mostly reasonable person. Though many Ravnicans agree with the laws he made or the rulings he declared in court cases, there wasn't anything to hint of his nefarious nature. After Agrus Kos accidentally broke the Guildpact by arresting Szadek, the magical pact that kept the guilds at peace was broken. Augustin wanted to use this opportunity to reconstruct Ravnica into a lawful utopia and an authoritarian state. To do this, he needed to either create or formulate as much chaos as possible. After Szadek was sent to prison, Augustin infiltrated it, killed the vampiric parun, and enslaved his ghost. He sent Szadek to infiltrate the Boros's lair called the Parhelion and slaughter all of the angels on board including their guildleader Razia. After Kos slew the Simic guildleader Momir Vig and ended his plot to destroy Ravnica with Experiment Kraj and the Rakdos guildleader Rakdos was put into a coma, Augustin gathered the rest of the Senate and they voted to put Ravnica under martial law with Augustin overseeing the entire plane. He was challenged by Kos, but he threw a grounder that released Szadek's spirit. Free from his imprisonment, Szadek got his revenge on his murderer. After his death, Leonos II became the new guildleader of the Azorius Senate and the guild was set into a better direction.
