"Aunt" Jane Schmidt is a major antagonist in the 2023 supernatural horror film Five Nights at Freddy's, the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name.
Jane was the greedy, nasty, heartless aunt of Mike Schmidt and Abby Schmidt, wanted to make it seem like Mike was an unsuitable person to take care of Abby and get her custody to receive a monthly check from the government. Jane didn't care about Abby in any way and did everything she could to make it seem like Mike was a bad person, even deciding to hire Max, Jeff, Hank and Carl (a group of vandals) to destroy Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place so that Mike would lose his job and a judge gave Jane custody of Abby, but her Vandals were killed by Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken (Mr. Cupcake) and Foxy the Pirate and presumably Jane was killed by Golden Freddy.
She was portrayed by Mary Stuart Masterson in her first villainous role.
Personality[]
Aunt Jane was a ruthless, manipulative, and cunning woman who feigned kindness toward Abby, but both she and Mike knew her true nature as someone who was greedy and rude. Jane hated Mike and Abby and they hated her back. She called Mike a degenerate for his supposed crimes for having trouble keeping a job due to mistakes that could be understood and forgiven and Abby mentally ill for being an introvert, further showing how horrible she was. Jane didn't treat anyone with respect, not even her lawyer Doug or her workers. She also used crocodile tears to get her way, showing a manipulative side. At one point, she flatly stated that the idea of killing her own nephew was tempting and also displays psychotic tendencies.
Jane was also a huge hypocrite, since while there was some truth behind her saying that Mike is not perfectly capable of taking care of Abby, which even Mike himself admits, she didn't have room to talk since she only wanted Abby for the money she would get from the monthly checks. She also chose to watch TV instead of prioritizing Abby's well-being and checking on her when she locks herself inside her room all day out of frustration, further reinforcing what a bad legal guardian she was. On that note, she has her goons destroy Mike's new workplace, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, committing multiple felonies just to make him look bad.
Biography[]
Aunt Jane was first seen with Mike and her lawyer Doug at Abby's school, where she was talking to Dr. Lillian (Abby's school psychologist). Jane planned to take custody of Abby if Mike didn't take good care of her (which was actually true but was because Mike left her with her babysitter Max, who was secretly working for Aunt Jane along with her brother Jeff and their friends Hank and Carl while he worked). She then pretended to cry when Mike objects to her custody and wanted Lillian to believe in her, she then told Mike to sign the custody papers, to which he asked what would happen if he refused, to which Jane told him that she and Doug would take him to trial, where any good judge would make sure Mike would never see Abby again. Mike and Lillian were left alone and Mike told Lillian that Jane didn't care about Abby and just wanted a monthly check from the government but Mike acknowledged that Jane was right about Mike not being the best to take care of Abby, Lillian knew that Mike was much better for Abby than Jane would ever be and encouraged him to fight for custody of Abby. Mike decided to listen to Lillian and got a job as a security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place.
After Mike's first night at the pizzeria, Aunt Jane and Doug met up with Max and Jeff at Sparky's, a coffee shop, where the waiter asked them what they would eat to which she told him that they would not eat anything to which the waiter told Jane that that was not right but she asked him if they paid him to talk or if he could leave them alone so the waiter left and she thanked him. Being alone, Jane began to talk to Max believing that she was a failure, Jeff told her to shut up and that Max checked the place many times and that if there was anything she would have found it and demanded that she pay them the $200 of the deal, Jane questioned this since Max had the job of finding evidence that Mike was a criminal and she only discovered that Abby was a sweetness and that Mike slept a lot (which was not a crime), Doug started to look scared and Jeff asked what was wrong with him, Doug said he shouldn't hear that and shouldn't even be there so he tried to get up and leave but Jane sat him down, Jane told Max and Jeff that unless they had a good idea which she didn't think they had the deal was over, Jeff suggested just killing Mike, Doug got scared and tried to leave again but Jane sat him down, Jane thought the idea was tempting but he said no, Max remembered that Mike needed his job so that a judge would believe that he was suitable to take care of Abby, then Jeff proposed destroying the pizzeria, as a security guard Mike had to make sure that no one got in, vandals could come in, destroy the place and take whatever they wanted as a bonus, Mike would lose his job, the judge would give Jane custody of Abby and Jane would give the Vandals $2000, Jane agreed to give them $1000 but she told them to be quick and not ruin the deal.
After Mike's second night, Vandals entered the pizzeria to destroy it but the Animatronics noticed the intruders and proceeded to stop them and Freddy, Bonnie, Chica (Mr. Cupcake) and Foxy killed the goons without Aunt Jane finding out about their deaths, after Mike returned home Abby found the papers that Jane gave to Mike and he told her that the papers weren't important and Abby asked him why he had them, Mike said it was complicated and mentioned Jane, Abby said she hated Jane and that Jane was bad and always smelled like cigarettes, Mike laughed and Abby told him that it was no laughing matter to which Mike said that she was right and that it was just cute that they agreed that Jane was bad, Abby asked Mike if he planned to give her away which he denied and then Vanessa Shelly (a police officer who became friends with Mike and Abby) knocked on the door.
During Mike's fifth night, Mike called Aunt Jane and asked her for help, in the morning at breakfast time, Abby discovered that Jane was home, Mike tried to explain to her what he planned to do but Abby believed that Mike would abandon her with their horrible aunt and Abby got angry and locked herself in her room, Jane started talking to Mike and told him that Abby reminded her a lot of Mike and she thought they both had a bad temper, Mike got ready to go out and asked Jane that when Abby calm down, tell her that Mike was sorry and that he would be back soon, Jane told Mike that they should have a long talk when Mike got back and Mike left early for work. When night came, Abby was still locked in her room, Jane knocked on her door and said she couldn't stay here, and she knew it, but Abby didn't answer, Jane decided to leave her like this and went into the living room, Jane decided to sit on the couch and watch TV, feeling that she had won, but what Jane hadn't done. it was known that Golden Freddy (the leader of the animatronics) was standing behind her, Golden Freddy came to look for Abby and then presumably killed Jane (it is not known exactly how Golden Freddy killed Jane and whether he killed her, but most likely he struck her a hard blow to the head, which must have been fractured her skull, which caused her to immediately lose consciousness and probably died very quickly), punishing her for bad deeds and forcing her to die along with her workers, Abby heard a loud noise, so she left her room to see what it was, and she saw the Golden Freddy and mistook him for Freddy, the ghost child inside the Golden Freddy (the blond boy) came out, he told her that he was not Freddy and that the others were waiting for her to play, Abby took her things, and when they came out, they saw Jane on the floor., Abby did not know that she was dead, and the blond boy told her that Jane was asleep, and they took a taxi to the pizzeria, leaving the corpse of her despicable aunt (or unconscious) where it lay.
It is not known exactly what happened to Aunt Jane's corpse, but it is likely that after Mike and Abby defeated William Afton and returned home, they found Jane dead and buried her. However, it has not been confirmed that she is dead, so Jane's final fate is unknown.
Trivia[]
- Curiously, Aunt Jane and Golden Freddy were the leaders of their respective groups and Golden Freddy was the one who killed Jane while the other animatronics killed the Vandals. Plus, they both had goals that involved Abby.
- The title "Aunt Jane" is very similar to "Aunt Jen", who is an established character in the Novel Trilogy as Henry Emily's sister and Charlotte Emily's aunt. Ironically, Aunt Jen is a heroic woman who cares for her niece, in comparison to the vile Aunt Jane.
- It is unknown if Mike and Abby ever found out if Golden Freddy killed her. The novelization claims Mike knows.
