Auntie Ethel is a minor antagonist and boss in the 2023 fantasy video game, Baldur's Gate 3, serving as the titular main antagonist of the Hag storyline.
She is a cruel and sadistic Green Hag (a race of witch monsters) who disguises herself as a kind old merchant to lure and capture victims for her experiments.
She is voiced by Rena Valeh.
Description[]
In her human disguise, Ethel presents herself as a kindly old woman that goes out of her way to help the needy.
Her true form is a hideous green crone with a hunched back.
Ethel used her human disguise to pursue her own selfish aims, which she furthered by manipulation, outright lies, and various forms of torture. She was thoroughly evil in how she used others, exploiting their greatest desires or fears for her own gain. Though, she usually keep her word.
History[]
The player character will meet Auntie Ethel in her human form in the company of a community of Tieflings that has been exiled from Elturel, working as an herborist and maker of potions.
Ethel secretly made a deal with a pregnant woman named Mayrina, offering to bring her husband Connor back from the dead in exchange for her unborn baby. She kept Mayrina within her hut in the middle of a swamp until the baby was born, offering promises that she would provide a better life for the child than the poor woman ever could. While returning to her lair in her human form, Ethel was confronted by Mayrina's brothers Johl and Demir.
When the Player's party arrives at this location, Auntie Ethel can be found forcing Mayrina to eat. If the party takes Ethel up on her offer for help, she will attempt to remove the Illithid Tadpole before stopping and declaring the Tadpole modified by ancient Netherese magic. The price for her help is to give up an eye to her, which she refuses to reverse despite failing to cure the protagonist.
If the party refuses her offer, initiates combat, or attempts to infiltrate down into her lair, a cave under the swamp, Auntie Ethel will reveal her true form and attacks the party.
Much later, she will appear again, this time disguised as Captain Grisly, in the Blushing Mermaid inn, in the lower side of Baldur's Gate city, with her new lair in the basement of the inn. Some time after taking over the inn, she kidnapped and ate a girl called Vanra, in order to 'incubate' her and make a new hag. She also tricked several innocent people into 'meetings' in the basement, only to capture them and force them to wear a whispering mask, essentially turning them into mindless thralls. Ethel reveals she is virtually immortal due to her life force being maintained in magic mushrooms, which explains how she came back after her first defeat. If killed previously, she's more hostile with the party, preventing the party from demanding a counter-offer to leave her alone. A potion called Hag's Bane can also be thrown at Ethel, forcing her to regurgitate Vanra, but this will immediately make her hostile and order her redcap minions to kill the party.
Powers & Abilities[]
Auntie Ethel is skilled in the use of druidic and illusion magic.
