The Authentic IRA are the main antagonists of the 2017 action thriller film The Foreigner. It is a radical terrorist organization who striked London.
Overview[]
Not much known about the Authentic IRA, but the group was formed either as an autonomous group of Irish Republican Army or splintered from it sometimes between 1998 and 2017, and they continues to hold extreme views of merging the Northern Ireland by the Republic of Ireland. They even committed terror attacks in England, most likely to gives an attention to the British authorities.
In 2017, a member of the Authentic IRA, Patrick O'Reilly bombs the street of London, killing some people (including Fan Quan) and the others in the process.
While Liam Hennessy tries to identify the guilty people with the aid from his contacts and orders that known IRA weapons dumps be searched for missing explosives, the Authentic IRA catches on and outsmarts him.
Commander Richard Bromley reports to Hennessy that Hugh McGrath is the ringleader of the Authentic IRA. So, Hennessy tortures McGrath into giving him the identities of the bombers with Maggie who is actually named Sara Mackay. The father of Fan, Ngoc Minh Quan also learns about that. So, he entered into the Authentic IRA's hideout in the guise of a handyman while the police and MI5 are ready to raid the building. After Quan kills all Authentic IRA's members, except Maggie whom he injures with a shot, the police begins storming the building and interrogates Maggie about the bomb and she replies them the bomb was planted inside of the laptop of the reporter Ian Wood whom Maggie seduced. After the laptop was thrown by the authorities and it exploded without harming anyone, Maggie is executed. The nephew of Hennessy, Sean Morrison visits her aunt Mary Hennessy and shoots her dead for being part of the Authentic IRA. This eliminates the entire Authentic IRA's cell for good.
Quan confronts Hennessy and shows him the pictures of Hennessy kissing Maggie, which is sufficient to throws suspicion on Hennessy and his role in the bombings. He points a gun at Hennessy to force him to post the picture, publicly exposing his association with the Authentic IRA and destroying his political career.
