Buford, also known as Ax, is a villain in the Valiant Comics universe, being a former member and later enemy of the Harbingers.
Biography[]
Ax is a teen prodigy and computer hacker who joins the Harbingers; however, he is not very popular among them. When asked to decode some disks from the Harbinger Foundation, Ax asks for $500, which he keeps even after he is unable to crack the files. When Sting taps him on the back of the head, however, Ax suddenly gains the power of technopathy and decodes the files as extraterrestrial landing sites. The Harbingers fly up to a spaceship to investigate, only to be gassed and most of them put in stasis by the Spider Aliens, while their human ally, Rexo, takes Ax, seeing some potential in him.
Ax sides with Rexo and the Spider Aliens and, as payment, wants Zephyr as his sex slave, while planning to kill the other Harbingers. Zephyr wrestles out of his grip, whereupon an infuriated Ax sics Rexo and the rest onto the Harbingers. When given the choice of slaughtering his former teammates personally or giving the job to the spider aliens, Ax states that he wants to see the Spider Aliens eat the Harbingers alive. Flamingo offers herself up in Zephyr's place, but when she gets close enough, she burns off his testicles. The Harbingers defeat Rexo and the Spider Aliens and dump Ax in the middle of nowhere.
An angry Ax gets some thugs on his payroll, destroys Torque's house, and takes him hostage, planning to torture him to death. However, he is interrupted by the rest of the Harbingers. Ax sics his dog, Boba Fett, on Kris, telling him to tear her throat out. However, Kris successfully fights Boba Fett off. Incensed, Ax attempts to rape Kris with his hammer and tries to bash her skull in. Fortunately, he is pulled off by Torque and kicked in the testicles by Kris. He and the thugs are left at the mercy of the police while the Harbingers escape.
Ax continues various methods for his bid for world domination. Along the way, he fights with more heroes, trying to beat X-O Manowar to death, coercing the Manowar armor's location out of Manowar's drunk assistant, and enacting vengeance on anyone who wrongs him. Manowar cuts his arm off, the second Manowar puts his eye out, and Bloodshot burns his whole body.
Ax escapes from prison during an attack from Bloodshot's alter-ego, Rampage. He murders a security guard to get cardinal files to Bloodshot's location. Ax tries to kill Bloodshot, but is stopped by Ninjak. Ax's continual attempts to get the nanites lost him his body, and he becomes a cyborg by the year 2028. However, he has a long list of victims behind him. Eventually, however, he murders Bloodshot and takes the nanite blood for himself. However, Ax knows that Toyo Harada also wants the blood and will stop and nothing to kill him, so, before his physical body is killed by Harada's men, Ax imprints a set of his brain patterns into the nanites themselves.
Centuries later, Ax returns to life and possesses Rai through the nanites, using his new body to sadistically beat Spylocke's friends down. He is just about to put Spylocke's eyes out with a heated soldering iron when Rai takes possession of his body back for a little bit. Angry at Rai's refusal to cooperate, Ax reveals that he wants to dominate the world and have everyone worship him. Ax excapes into the net, promises to return to kill Rai and Spylocke later, and tries to get to Nepal to take overy all the networks on Earth. A final battle between Ax against Rai and Spylocke ensues, ending with Ax suddenly possessing Spylocke's gun and turning it on Rai. A while later, Ax rules Earth, with everyone worshipping him and slaves trying to follow his command to move a giant golden statue in his image. When asked, Ax does not remember how he took over the world.
This is quickly revealed to be a simulation in which Spylocke has trapped Ax in a virtual reality catering to Ax's every whim and put him in a fantasy where he rules all.
Personality[]
Though initially seeming to be just an obnoxious slimeball, Ax soon proves to be truly depraved and (possibly) also a bit of a misogynist. He is also hegemonic and has a bad habit of overestimating his own intelligence.
Trivia[]
- Valiant Entertainment would introduce another hacker called Octavio Gonzalez, who is also nicknamed Ax. However, this Ax is a more heroic character, being an ally to the Renegades.
- That said, a future version of this version of Ax appears as a villain, being more similar to the Valiant Comics version of Ax.
