Axl Ro is a minor antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run. He is a former American Soldier that served in the American Civil War in 1863. In 1890, he was tasked by Funny Valentine to kill Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar. He wields the Stand known as Civil War.
Personality[]
Axl Ro is a man heavily burdened by guilt and the desire to transfer it to someone else. In his youth he had ambitions of being a musician like Dvorak but grew depressed dreading the civil war and his position in it. One night while on lookout for a remote town he spotted the enemy troop advancing to the town he was supposed to look after, out of fear of being spotted and killed Axl refused to light the signal for his troops, leading to them and the town to be massacred effectively sacrificing their lives for his own. In 1890 Axl still carried guilt regarding this event which manifested in his Stand Civil War Axl seeks to use it to "purify" himself by transferring his stands manifestation of the deceased "ghosts" of the townsfolk to others. When talking through his Stand Axl can be arrogant, mocking his enemies while they're under the effect of his ability, though he will also be fair as he told Gyro his stands weakness.

In 1863, Axl Ro was enlisted into the American Civil War, it is his heavily implied from his dialogue of "my side experienced constant losses" and his uniforms color scheme that he fought for the confederacy. One night while stationed near Gettysburg in the treetops keeping watch for enemy troops, Axl took to booze to cope with his fear but ended up oversleeping only to discover enemy troops approaching. Given the option to sacrifice his own life by lighting the lantern signal for his troops or do nothing and survive Axl chose the latter. Immediately after this inaction the town he was meant to be guarding along with his troop were massacred by the enemy, leaving Axl as the sole survivor. It is unclear whether he was dishonorably discharged following this event but it is clear that the guilt weighed on his mind for the next 27 years. In 1890, current president Funny Valentine enlisted Axl as a subordinate due to him developing a stand.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run[]
Axl is stationed in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on orders to retrieve the Holy Corpse from Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar as well as to kill them and any other enemies. While residing in a church Axl tricks Hot pants one of the users of the corpse parts into the church where he activates Civil War on her, triggering manifestations of her guilt. When Johnny and Gyro arrive they are attacked by these manifestations and Axl's physical stand, though Johnny manages to nullify the stand with holy water. While Johnny manages to find Gyro and lethally wound Axl, as he bleeds out Axl reveals that Johnny sacrificed him, fulfilling the conditions of his stand Civil war and was now purified before dying from his wounds. A copy of Axl's body is then manifested from his Stand as he reveals that part of his ability allows for the sins of the one killed to be transferred to the perpetrator (in this case Johnny) which transfers the ghost manifestations of the Gettysburg troops and townsfolk to Johnny.
As Johnny is nearly torn to pieces by the ghosts he activates Tusk Act 3 to manifest within a wormhole and shoot Axl, however Axl reveals its pointless as he as well as the ghosts are manifestation of Johnnys guilt effectively making him and the other ghosts invincible. Johnny then attempts to destroy the corpse forcing Axl to lose an arm and kill Johnny, however by rule of Civil War's ability due to Axl's sin and miniscule guilt of killing Johnny, his body was replicated and "purified" making the sins of Axl return back to him including the ghosts. Axl attempts to force Johnny to kill him one more time but is shot in the neck by Funny Valentine, Valentine explains that since hes not in Axl's stands range and he acted to "save" Johnny his ability would not effect him as well as the fact he feels no guilt toward Axl, Valentine leaves with the corpse as Axl dies from his wound's with his ability unable to save him.

Axl Ro's Stand, Civil War, manifests itself as a humanoid figure, with its face taking the form of a metallic mask with filter like discs pressed on the side of its head. Its primary ability is to manifest objects and people from the minds of its targets causing the psychological distress. Its secondary ability allows for pseudo resurrection which Axl describes as purification, if someone is killed within the stands range and the killer feels even a miniscule form of guilt the deceased will be reanimated by the Stand ability, creating a new body for the victim as well as transferring their sins to the perpetrator. In this state the victim is effectively unkillable by the perpetrator unless they are attacked out of range by someone who lacks guilt.

- Axl Ro and his Stand's namesake are based on the Guns N' Roses lead singer Axl Rose and their song Civil War respectively.
- Interestingly, Funny Valentine had also fought in the American Civil War with his uniforms color scheme heavily implying he fought for the Union contrasting off of Axl.
