| “ | Creating a god... Yes, we are using human wisdom to create a god! If humanity cannot attain omniscience and omnipotence, then we shall create a god to reveal them! This is the pinnacle of human wisdom. We shall regain a god's guidance at long last. No longer will we flounder in the interminable void of consciousness and knowledge. Even Irminsul will be freed from its plight. For our nation of scholars, this is the ultimate aspiration — no cost is too great to realize it. | „ |

| “ | Gods exist on a plane that far eclipses humanity's. Lesser Lord Kusanali... What can she even do? Care for the people? Fend off sandstorms? Fabricate silly fairy tales? These are but child's play for the Akademiya. Does that make us equal to the gods? We are a people favored by Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. Though I may have personally not seen it, our forefathers bore witness to "true wisdom." The ascension of the Lesser Lord has brought nothing but bewilderment to the scholars. They all ask, "Is that truly what true wisdom is supposed to look like?" With that in mind, it is better to keep her isolated in the Sanctuary of Surasthana so our academy will not become embroiled in turmoil. | „ |
| ~ Azar's Hypocritical thought on Lesser-Lord Kusanali. |
Azar is a supporting antagonist of the 2020 action role-playing fantasy game Genshin Impact, who serves as one of the two secondary antagonists of the Sumeru Archon Quests (alongside Scaramouche), being the overarching antagonist of the first, third and fourth acts including the Song of the Welking Moon archon quests, and the main antagonist of the second and fifth acts.
He is a Rhtawahist Sage who is the Grand Sage of the Sumeru Akademiya, which basically makes him Sumeru's head of state. Holding a huge disdain for fun and entertainments, he is the head of an experiment he and his lead engineer Setaria (who was inducted to the Akademiya to help the sages in their God-Creation Plan beyond her will) devised to utilize the Akasha Terminal to harvest the populace's dreams by repeating the Saberuz Festival in a loop.
He was voiced by Kim Yong.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Not much was known about Azar before he became the Grand Sage of the Sumeru Akademiya. At some point while being Grand Sage, he declined Cyno's request to investigate data he submitted to the Akasha System surrounding the sages' plans to create the new God of Wisdom, claiming that the matra work for the sages and shall not question them, leading to him to resign from his position as General Mahamatra. He also had Alhaitham to reject researcher Siraj’s hive mind thesis out of its practical concerns, in addition to violating the sins of the Akademiya, leading to his vendetta against Alhaitham.
God-Creation Plan[]
He and the sages wanted to replace Lesser Lord Kusanali with another God of Wisdom after Kusanali was detained 500 years before the events of the game, seeing her as a "disappointment" in his eyes. So, he accepted the offer of expelled Akademiya student and Fatui Harbinger Il Dottore to help him ascend Scaramouche to a god, in which the sages accepted out of their desire to worship a God of Wisdom that matched the wisdom of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata in their eyes. He and Setaria sketched a plan to make a dream samsara to harvest dreams from the people at Sumeru City, subjecting them to 168 days of torture and dream harvesting. After the Traveler and Dehya foiled their plans convincing Nilou, the host of the samsara dream, as soon as Azar and his cronies tried to torment her even further for mentioning Kusanali, by making her realize that she was the subject of the sages' mad plans.
Nahida then manipulates Setaria and three other close contacts to lead her away from the Akademiya due to her immense guilt for betraying the desert people after she was hired to work with the sages. This lead to her revealing that Setaria was working for Azar to engineer the samsara dream to gather dreams to power the new God of Wisdom with the body of Scaramouche, leading to her detainment. The Traveler proceeds to the Akademiya only for the The Doctor to manipulate everyone through the Akasha into greeting the Traveler to let their guard down and cowardly dispose of them, only for Nahida to remove the information uploaded to the Akasha Terminals, angry at the Doctor for controlling her people. With The Doctor sensing the Dendro Archon's presence, they head off to Pardis Dhyai.
With the Dendro Archon recaptured, the Traveler and Alhaitham would settle in Aaru Village to unravel more of the sages' plans. It is revealed that the Grand Sage had utilized the abandoned hospital in Dar-al-Shifa to manufacture Divine Knowledge Capsules from the recaptured scholars to fuel Scaramouche with forbidden knowledge so that he could ascend into a god. Alhatiham comes up with a plan to release Kusanali since her presence is required to cleanse Sumeru of its corruption, especially forbidden knowledge, future Withering Zones and Eleazar, after finding out that the Akademiya tried to cover up all traces of forbidden knowledge and its corruption on their people.
Defeat[]
| “ | Azar: ("Lesser Lord Kusanali has escaped from the Sanctuary of Surasthana. Go to the city and arrest the escapee immediately..." How can that be...? Stop thinking about it, stop... It must be a trick of theirs. As long as I personally confirm it...) Ah... (Nahida's cage doesn’t appear at Azar's eyes) ...Impossible. That's impossible. There must be something wrong with my eyes... (Nahida's cage starts to appear at Azar's eyes) Eh? She really appeared again... What is the meaning of this...? Cyno: What a comical sight, Azar. Once the Akasha has put certain thoughts into your head, even the Grand Sage can no longer see what's right in front of him. You all can only see the world in your mind, the one you think you know. And precisely because of this, you disregarded Lesser Lord Kusanali's existence... She has been a wise and worthy archon. |

Azar revealing his true colors to Alhaitham and the Traveler
On Jnargabha Day, the heroes execute their operation to free Lesser Lord Kusanali. Alhaitham plans to infiltrate Azar's office to release the Dendro Archon through its console where the Traveler would help release her. They went to the House of Daena to set up the Traveler's arrest and try to avoid getting spotted, but Azar intercepts the Traveler. They try to talk out his Fatui dealings, but he only states his concerns about the new God of Wisdom. Alhaitham misleads Azar into thinking that the both had betrayed him, but Azar calls out Alhaitham's plan, leading to him to drop the Divine Knowledge Capsule in a fit of rage. He orders the guards to send him to Aaru Village, apprehending the Traveler and Paimon while arrongantly thinking that his plans will be set forth in motion now that they're out of the way, but Alhaitham outsmarts them by faking his insanity. The Traveler and Paimon try to find a way to connect to Nahida trying to find a place with good reception, remembering that Kusanali sealed her consciousness with the Akasha after being recaptured by The Doctor, and the village keepers modified the Traveler's Akasha Terminal to help with connecting to Nahida. The Traveler successfully enters Nahida's consciousness, and destroys the barrier sealing it. With Nahida almost rescued, the second half of the plan begins.
Nilou decides to perform in front of the Sumeru Akademiya to trigger the false order, as the false order of Kusanali escaping to the city gets passed as Alhaitham faked being insane from Divine Knowledge and replaced the capsule containing the act with the one containing the false order, leading to their attempt to pursue Kusanali. With the guards occupied, Dehya and the Eremites have Isak dressed as Kusanali to lead them to an ambush in the Grand Bazaar. Having done what he's told, Azar goes to check on his guards. He discovers the order, wondering where it was transmitted in the first place. When Uday questions Azar, he decides to go and check on the Sanctuary of Surasthana. But when he was about to find out that Nahida really escaped thanks to the Traveler, Cyno catches him and demands him to plead himself guilty to the Dendro Archon before forcing him to release her. Dehya frees the Traveler from the Sanctuary of Surasthana as the plan was a success. Knowing of the full extent of the sages' plans, Kusanali removes the sages' access to the Akasha System and heads to fight Scaramouche alongside the Traveler.
After the Traveler defeats Scaramouche, Kusanali uses the Electro Gnosis she took from him to create an entry point to Rukkhadevata's final memory. In there, they find out that Rukkhadevata had to be erased from existence to remove the forbidden knowledge from Irminsul. Kusanali regretfully complies and decides to undo the Forbidden Knowledge. They return to the real world to meet The Doctor, who puts the Traveler and Paimon to sleep. Nahida negotiates with him for the Electro and Dendro Gnoses, having tricked him into destroying his segments in exchange for the former, and gave him the latter seeing no use for it after termimating the Akasha System in exchange for information that "piques her interest", which is about how the sky in Teyvat is fake.
The next day, Azar is banished to the Avidya Forest and is forced to cultivate wisdom by the Dendro Archon for eternity as a punishment for his crimes, "regretting their old ideologies" towards the fact that they weren't able to continue with their plans.
Trivia[]
- He is named after Azar, Abraham’s father in the Islamic theology, who rejected his son’s faith in God while making statues of idolatry. Coincidentally, he rejects faith in Lesser Lord Kusanali to the point where he has no qualms with helping Dottore create a new God of Wisdom.
- Additionally, Azar also means "unluck" in both Spanish and Portuguese, which also fits with its fate of being banished to the Avidya forest.
