The Lord? I was once an Angel of the Lord. And I know a lot more about God than any mortal. He won't lift a finger for you. He merely stands by and watches. You've been praying for him to save your daughter and what has he done? Her health continues to deteriorate and still he does nothing.
~ Azazel to Maria.

Azazel is the main antagonist of the anime series Supernatural: The Animation, based on the CW TV series Supernatural.

He is a fallen angel and the leader of the demons, as well as the one responsible for turning Sam into a Special Child with his demon blood. His goal is to open the Devil’s Gate to release his army of demons from Hell. He is also the arch-nemesis of the Winchester Clan.

He was voiced by Naoya Uchida in Japanese and Alain Goulem in English.

Personality[]

Azazel retains most of his traits from the original series, such as his sadism and manipulative nature. He likes to play with his victims' emotions and manipulates them into making deals with him, only for them to be possessed by his demons that he sends out to do his work. And just like the original, he likes to corrupt others and finds doing so to Sam more fun due to the latter's kind-hearted nature.

However, one thing this Azazel lacks is the loyalty to Lucifer, who seemingly doesn't exist in this continuity, so his agendas are entirely on his own. Additionally, he doesn't mourn his demons' deaths unlike the original Azazel who mourned Meg and Tom and even took his anger on Dean for killing them. As such, he is viler than his original counterpart due to having been stripped of the latter's redeeming qualities.

Biography[]

Azazel was once an angel in Heaven in service of God, before falling from grace and turning into a demon. He became the ruler of Hell and leader of demons. He likes to make deal with people and let demons possess them, although twice he does uphold the end of the bargain.

Azazel eventually decided to create a group of Special Children by feeding babies his own blood, so that they would develop psychic powers in their mid-20s. He kept tabs on every child and would kill their mothers if they interrupted him. One such mother was Mary Winchester, mother of Sam Winchester. Because of this, Mary’s husband, John, as well as Sam’s older brother, Dean, and Sam himself dedicated their lives to stop him to avenge her.

When a woman named Maria prays for God to heal her ill daughter Meg Masters, Azazel appears and offers her a deal to heal Meg, allowing a demon to possess the latter in the process. Maria at first refuses, but gives in once Meg’s condition gets worse. The demon is then sent by Azazel to kill the hunter Henderson, who has long investigated the fire Azazel was causing.

Azazel would then approach the vampire Gayle and offer to save his son, who is dying from the hunters’ attempt to kill him, in exchange for Gayle himself being possessed by a demon. Gayle agrees and Azazel has the demon find the Colt. The demon succeeds only to lose it to the Winchesters, who also kill Gayle in the process.

Azazel later gathers all Special Children and put them into a fight to the death. The one who comes out on top is Jake Talley, who Azazel orders to open the Devil's Gate in Wyoming with the Colt. Although hesitating at first, Jake eventually gives in when Azazel threatens his mother and sister. After Jake successfully opened the Gate despite Missouri, Dean, Sam and Bobby's efforts to stop him, Sam beats him to death and the hunters try to close the gate, so Azazel decides to intervene. He takes the Colt from Dean and telekinetically pins Sam and Dean to graves stones, then taunts Dean before attempts to kill him with the Colt, only to be stopped by John's ghost. Dean then grabs the Colt and kills Azazel, ending his reign of terror once and for all.

Trivia[]

  • In this incarnation, Azazel is heavily implied to be the Devil himself, given his origin as a fallen angel, and he never denies it when being called such. Bobby also claims that Demonic Omens that Azazel is implied to have caused are characteristics of the Devil.
