NOTE: This article is about the novel version of Azog. You may be looking for information on his Peter Jackson counterpart.

Gandalf: Your grandfather Thrór was killed, you remember, in the Mines of Moria by Azog the Goblin.
Thorin: Curse his name, yes.
~ Thorin and Gandalf, remarking of how Thrór was killed by Azog

Azog the Defiler is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside the Necromancer) in both J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 classic fantasy novel The Hobbit and its 1989 graphic novel adaption. He was a powerful and ruthless orc chieftain who led the Orc armies of Moria and swore to wipe out the line of Durin, first slaying Thrór, then proceeding to slay Nain, Dain Ironfoots's father, before getting killed by Dain.

Biography[]

Azog and his orcs took over the mines of Moria, having possibly been sent there by Sauron, and he became one of the most influential orcs in the northern lands. When the dwarf lord, Thrór, visited Moria in the hopes of possibly rebuilding it, he was captured and brought to Azog. Declaring Thrór a thief, the goblin had him tortured for two days, killing and beheading him upon hearing of more dwarves outside Moria.

The orc proceeded to call out to the dwarf, Nár, from over the gates, that those who tried to steal from him would meet the same fate and that he was the king of Moria. Azog even refused to let Nár take Thrór's head back, throwing a sack of coins at him as if to pay for Thrór's life to scorn him, and ordered his goblins to hack up Thrór's body and feed it to ravens.

This action would generate incredible hatred for Azog amongst the dwarves and Thráin, Thrór's son, would mass an army of dwarves in the war against the goblins. After nine years, Azog's forces in Moria met the dwarves in battle, and killed Náin. Azog was finally killed in the fight by Dáin Ironfoot, Náin who beheaded the mighty Orc. Azog's head was set on a stake, with a bag of money he gave to Nár put in his mouth. Azog's body and head were probably disposed of.

Azog's son, Bolg took his dad's place as leader of the Orcs and planned revenge for his father's death. Hundreds of years later, Bolg would be destroyed in The Battle of the Five Armies.

Appearance[]

Azog appears as a giant Orc with heavy armor. He wields a giant sword. Like all Orcs, he is an ugly, disgusting monster.

Personality[]

Not much is known about Azog's personality, but he seems to be a cruel and ruthless Orc. He ruthlessly beheaded Thrór, and taunted the Dwarves by mockingly tossing the head at them. He eventually had himself killed by Dain.

Killed Victims[]

  • Thrór
  • Náin
  • Numerous dwarves

Video Games[]

Azog appears in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch-king.

In Lord of the Rings Online, Azog is revealed to have another son named Mazog, as well as a grandson by Bolg known as Gorgar.

Trivia[]

  • In the Peter Jackson films, Azog survived the battle of Moria and lived on to become Thorin Oakenshield's arch-nemesis.
