You dare suggest I betray Iroh? My first born? Directly after the demise of his only beloved son? I think Iroh has suffered enough. But you, your punishment has scarcely begun!
~ Azulon to Ozai, after the latter demanded that Iroh be passed over as heir.

Fire Lord Azulon, simply known as Azulon, is a posthumous antagonist in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is the father of both Iroh and Ozai, as well as the grandfather of Zuko and Azula.

Cruel, frightening, ruthless and power-hungry, Azulon was a firebending prodigy and a cunning strategist who led the Fire Nation to many victories. Azulon reigned for almost the entire duration of the Hundred Year War, and his actions directly resulted in the near-complete destruction of the Southern Water Tribe, specifically its waterbenders.

He was voiced by the late Walker Edmiston, who also played Enik in the Land of the Lost TV series, and Catso in Runaway Ralph.

History

Azulon was born to Sozin and his unnamed wife (or concubine) sometime after Sozin's Comet arrived. He was crueler than his father and led some battles that ended in victory.

After Sozin died, Azulon was crowned Fire Lord. During his years as Fire Lord, he was responsible for the genocidal attacks on the Southern Water Tribe which nearly wiped out all of the waterbenders. He later conducted another raid that killed Katara and Sokka's mother, Kya.

When his firstborn son Iroh lost his only son in the Siege of Ba Sing Se, Ozai tried to usurp Iroh's birthright, stating that his children are alive. Azulon, outraged ordered Ozai to murder Zuko to see how it feels to lose his son. However, what Azulon didn't know was that Ursa discovered the order. She planned with Ozai to spare Zuko and that would make him Fire Lord. During that night, Ozai with Ursa's help killed Azulon and Ozai was crown Fire Lord the next morning.

Personality

Despite his short appearance in the show, Azulon was characterized as cold, inhumane, calculating, and merciless (much like his son Ozai and grandaughter Azula). He does respect his son Iroh more so than Ozai and was offended when the latter tried to take advantage of the death of Iroh's son to be eligible for the throne; Azulon simply ordered Ozai to murder his son Zuko, so he can learn what is like to lose a child.

In the end, this personality trait is what indirectly caused his death, since he never displayed any true love for Ozai - thus would later reflect on Ozai's relationship towards Ursa, Zuko, Azula, among others.

Trivia

  • Azula was named after him.
  • Azulon is the only Fire Lord during the Hundred Years War to not fight any incarnations of the Avatar, this is due to Aang being frozen for 100 years.

While Sozin targeted the Air Nomads and Ozai targeted the Earth Kingdom, Azulon targeted the Southern Water Tribe, and even created an entire unit of the Fire Nation Navy for this purpose. By the end of the Hundred Year War, the Southern Water Tribe was almost completely wiped out, and had been cut off from the Northern tribe for many years.
    • Due to Azulon's genocide of the Southern Water Tribe, bloodbending was invented.
