The Azure Dragons are the main antagonist from Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade, Dragon Slayer campaign, supporting antagonists from Heroes Chronicles: Clash of the Dragons and supporting protagonists from Heroes Chronicles: The Sword of Frost. These creatures were the strongest and most dangerous dragons in the known world of Enroth.
History[]
Very little is known about the azure dragons, it is certain that they appeared in the world of Enroth after the failed invasion against Erathia, and that they got their name from their azure color. They were rarely seen, but they were huge creatures and very few survived the battles against them. They were not much bigger than the other known dragons, but they were much stronger and tougher, and their enemies began to fear them if they fought against them for a long time, even the infamous black dragons and other dangerous monsters feared them. These creatures caught the attention of a wizard, Dracon, who wanted to become a famous dragon slayer and gain fame by killing the biggest dragons, the azure dragons. He set out to find the main nesting place of the dragons and kill them. The largest nest of azure dragons was located in the middle of the kingdom of Bracada in a snowy, mountainous area. These dragons lived almost exclusively in snowy, icy, cold, and mountainous areas, so it was no surprise that there were the most of them here. The locals said that the azure dragons had invaded the mountains and were using other dragons to protect their nests. They offered their help to Dracon, who estimated that he had six months to destroy the dragons and the nest before they were bound to another area that they could invade, so he had to hurry, but at the same time he was a little doubtful. He had heard about how strong, tenacious and terrifying these dragons were compared to the others, so he said one more prayer to his god before he left on his journey, which made him a little afraid that he would not return. The news turned out to be true because there were a lot of dragons, wizards and other creatures or people living in the mountains, but the dragon hunter managed to get past them. He also found an artifact after killing a hundred red and a hundred and ten black dragons, it was the Still Eye of the Dragon. After that, he found a tower in the northeast guarded by a powerful wizard, but in exchange for the artifact, he let the dragon hunter and his army pass. After that, they entered a beautiful, magical plain valley where they were attacked by fifty azure dragons and here the creatures really proved how strong and terrifying they were, but in the cruel fight they were all killed in the end. They then entered the valley, where they found frozen cliffs from which a hundred azure dragons launched an attack, and one of them announced that they would fight to the end and not let their leader down. The long and hard fight finally ended with Dracon and his remaining men killing the dragons and finding their leader, who told him that he had been watching their activities for some time and now he could show what he really knew. The creature then attacked them, but the dragon hunter eventually defeated and killed it, completely destroying their nest in Bracada. However, despite his victory over the leader, the fame that Draco had been waiting for fell short and he only looked sadly at the dead dragons and his companions and soldiers.
Although Dracon killed a great many of the azure dragons, they did not die out, but resurfaced later. The Dragon Queen of Nighon, Mutare Drake, wanted to conquer the world, so she created a dragon army from the evil dragons and her allies, the rust and crystal dragons, which, in addition to the forces of Nighon, launched separate attacks against AvLee and Erathia. The azure dragons voluntarily joined him and, taking into account their great strength and stature, they were immediately given a leadership role among the dragons. Only one species of dragon not joined them, the faerie dragons who were allies of the good dragons, AvLee and the immortal hero Tarnum and shared the goal of stopping Mutare. However, the azure dragons preemptively struck at them and started with the faerie dragons, as the two races did not like each other. Five of them began circling over their forests to prevent them from uniting with the elves and the forces of Erathia while the other dragons launched with the forces of Nighon of without them launched attacks. On one occasion, some of them destroyed a small elven village and many died, but Tarnum observed his enemy's strategy. Mutare's many armies were too scattered and his forces of different sizes were fighting on different fronts, so the enemies fighting against the immortal hero were also scattered. When he approached the forests of the faerie dragons, the azure dragons descended to the ground in their arrogance, because they believed that they could defeat their enemies here as well. The immortal hero saw that it would not be easy to defeat his enemies, as the ground beneath the beautiful dragons shook as soon as they landed. The five dragons showed how powerful and dangerous their kind was, but they were eventually defeated and the faerie dragons managed to merge with the forces of AvLee and Erathia. After that, they faced Mutare's forces and the dragon groups, led by an azure dragon, but the war began to decline. As a last resort, Mutare deployed the demon armies as well as her last azure dragons, but ultimately suffered a decisive defeat.
Soon after, however, Tarnum learned that his good friend Gelu wanted to destroy another artifact, the Sword of Frost, with an extremely powerful artifact, the Armageddon's Blade, but when the two superweapons clashed, their power would destroy the world of Enroth. With the elves completely on his side and Erathia tired of the wars, the immortal hero took over the overlords of Nighon and traveled to the island of Vori where the artifact was. However, when Kilgor's barbarians appeared, Tarnum thought he needed allies, so he thought of the azure dragons nesting on the island in addition to the evil dragons. He knew that these creatures were quite arrogant, but extremely powerful, and if he could manage to control them in his armies, his chances would be much better. When he found their nest, only one dragon voluntarily joined him, the others believed that he should first prove to them that he was worthy of their leadership. Then he sought out their frozen cliffs and killed the creatures guarding them, and then the dragons believed that he had proved the immortal hero's strength and courage to him, so they made an alliance. The elves and Kilgor's barbarians were no match against the mighty, brutal and terrifying azure dragons, and Tarnum advanced with ease. Although the immortal hero successfully defeated his opponents with them and captured the ancient city of Volee, his mission failed because Kilgor's wife, Kija, stole the Sword of Frost from the city and thus it was not possible to prevent the two powerful artifacts from clashing. Not a single one of these dragons was seen in Axeoth after the Reckoning, meaning they were most likely extinct.
Powers and abilities[]
Azure dragons were perhaps the most powerful creatures in the world of Enroth. They were not much taller than the other dragons, but they were extremely strong, tough and persistent. They spewed blue fire, and were able to instill fear in their enemies, even the most dangerous creatures, such as ancient behemoths, black or rust dragons feared them. They were completely immune to some of the magic spells, only the extremely powerful spells used by grandmasters damaged or destroyed them. Although they rarely appeared, a single one could destroy an entire army, and several were almost unstoppable with a few exceptions.
