Azure Lion is the main antagonist of Season 4 of Monkie Kid.
He was a Lion Demon that previously served the Jade Emperor as a Celestial Warrior, but subsequently defected to the Brotherhood, a group established by Monkey King with the aim of deposing the Jade Emperor and improving the world.
He was voiced by Christopher Sabat, who also voiced many Dragon Ball characters in the English dub.
Appearance[]
Azure Lion possessed a striking azure complexion, complemented by spiky orange hair that extended to his shoulders. Two tufts of hair at the front were secured with purple bands. Over the course of time, the majority of Azure Lion's fur underwent a transformation to black, but reverted to its original blue hue upon his ascension to the position of the Jade Emperor. He also has sharp fangs, a broad chest, and knees resembling those of a feline.
Azure Lion was adorned in a regal ensemble, featuring resplendent golden shoulder armor, complemented by a singular right breast-plate. His attire was further embellished with gold armored tassets, and a gold belt, which boasted a striking center of purple and pink hues. Additionally, he was draped in a tattered yet elegant purple cape, which added a touch of grandeur to his overall appearance.
In his capacity as the Jade Emperor, Azure donned up-turned pauldrons and a cropped gold chest plate that revealed his midriff. His cape was fashioned from gold fabric with a purple back and featured intricate designs at the ends. The skirt he wore was purple with gold lining, complemented by a gold loincloth and belt. As a colossal figure, his attire was proportionately larger, and his musculature had increased significantly. His twin tufts had elongated into lengthy strands of hair, and his hands and feet were adorned with four and three claws, respectively.

Past[]
Azure Lion served as a Celestial Warrior under the Jade Emperor, observing the suffering of the mortal realm and its inhabitants. During his service, he formed a close bond with two demons, Peng and Yellowtusk, after sharing a feast together. However, Azure Lion recognized that the Jade Emperor and his people were not taking action to address the issues plaguing the mortal realm.
Consequently, he departed from the Celestial Realm and journeyed to Flower Fruit Mountain, where he encountered Monkey King. Impressed by Monkey King's compassion towards the monkeys and the flourishing state of his home, Azure Lion became his sworn brother, along with Demon Bull King, Macaque, Peng, and Yellowtusk. During a convivial gathering with his sworn brothers, Azure Lion attentively listened to Monkey King's account of the "Havoc in Heaven" and their deliberation on deposing the Jade Emperor to assume his position. The Demon Bull King proposed that Azure Lion should assume the role, but the latter dissented, asserting that Monkey King was the rightful candidate as he had instigated the sworn brothers to challenge the Jade Emperor and champion righteousness.
During the battle for the Celestial Realm, Azure Lion and his sworn brothers were on the brink of triumph until the arrival of the Jade Emperor, which led to their defeat as Monkey King surrendered. Following the battle, only Azure Lion, Peng, and Yellowtusk remained as sworn brothers. They established Camel Ridge as their abode, but depleted all the surrounding energy to construct it. Subsequently, the Brotherhood confronted the pilgrims, who employed the Scroll of Memory to incarcerate the demons, except for Azure Lion, who was banished to the Underworld by Monkey King and imprisoned there for centuries. Eventually, the Nine-Headed Demon liberated Azure Lion, oblivious to the demons's true motive for doing so. Upon gaining his freedom, Azure Lion was determined to liberate Peng and Yellowtusk from the Scroll of Memory. However, his intentions were thwarted by Protective Curse that had been intricately bound into the scroll. The curse held captive anyone who dared to be free anyone to the scroll as it secured its captives. Furthermore, the curse was in a volatile state, ensnaring anyone who came into contact with the scroll whenever it was unfurled. Nevertheless, Azure Lion refused to be discouraged by the obstacle. He devised a cunning plan to outsmart MK, the only individual known to him who had potential to break the curse.
Season 4[]
Azure Lion embarked on a journey to Flower Fruit Mountain. During the mission, MK and Mei faced trouble, but Azure Lion defeated the Ink Demons and sealed the scroll. However, the two attacked him and stole it. Azure Lion demanded its return, but MK was hostile. He revealed that he knew of them and explained the scroll's history, cautioning against using it. He agreed to help them rescue their friends if they trusted each other. Azure Lion teleported them inside and cautioned against tampering with the memories excessively. He provided new attire to blend in and directives for Tang. After destroying the protective curse, Azure Lion met up with the Monkie Kids and Monkey King. He transported himself and the Monkie Kids to Camel Ridge, leaving Monkey King trapped in the scroll.
Azure clarified that he did not intend to deceive them but believed they would not understand. Seeking forgiveness is sometimes more convenient than seeking permission, he suggested. Mei attacked Azure, who retaliated with ink from the Scroll of Memory. The Brotherhood was freed and attacked the Monkie Kids. Azure apologized and offered to explain his plan by opening a memory. Azure expressed gratitude towards MK for their return. Pigsy suggested releasing Monkey King, but Azure Lion explained that he would remain sealed until their mission was accomplished. A fight ensued between MK and Azure for the plank, resulting in its accidental destruction. Azure expressed disappointment and regret, acknowledging that Monkey King's release was no longer possible. Despite Sandy's suggestion to use magic tape, Azure remained uncertain. He urged Peng and Yellowtusk to leave and warned the Monkie Kids not to interfere, threatening to destroy the plank.
The Brotherhood forcefully breached the fortress of the Demon Bull King. Azure Lion defended his actions, reminding the Demon Bull King of their cause. The Demon Bull King questioned Azure Lion's repeated failure, and Azure Lion accused the Demon Bull King of being sentimental. Azure Lion summoned the Scroll of Memory, despite Princess Iron Fan's attempts to impede him. Red Son was spared, allowing him to inform the Celestial Armies. Azure Lion dismissed their concerns of the Demon Bull King and Macaque rejoining the Brotherhood, stating that they possessed enough power to accomplish their coup. As Yellowtusk readied a portal to the Celestial Realm, Azure and the Brotherhood proceeded to teleport to their destination, where they were met by Ne Zha, Red Son, and the Celestial Armies. Despite Ne Zha's warning to leave the Celestial Realm or suffer the consequences, Azure Lion remained resolute in his unwavering determination to put an end to the Jade Emperor's reign.
During the assault on the Celestial Realm, Azure Lion utilized the Scroll of Memory against the Celestial Armies, summoning the Ink Demons as he incarcerated most of the Celestial Warriors and Red Son. Azure Lion challenged the Jade Emperor's authority, claiming that the Emperor viewed all life as inferior and refused to improve their world. Ne Zha attempted to explain the deeper meaning behind the Jade Emperor's rule when it comes to the world, but Azure Lion remained unconvinced and demanded proof. Later, Azure Lion and the Jade Emperor came face to face. The Jade Emperor acknowledged that Azure's chances of overthrowing him would have been minimal if he wasn't already on the brink of death. However, Azure Lion was not concerned about the cause of the Jade Emperor's demise. In a swift move, Azure Lion struck the Jade Emperor with his sword, instantly ending his life. As the Jade Emperor disintegrated, his immense power was transferred to Azure Lion, making him the new ruler of the Celestial Realm. With the Jade Emperor gone, Azure Lion wasted no time in informing Peng and Yellowtusk that they can now bring the mortal realm into a state of prosperity.
The Emperor's Wrath[]
Azure Lion's miscalculation in undervaluing the Power of the Jade Emperor and hastily usurping his authority led to a plethora of challenges in managing the power. Eventually, the power became overwhelming, surpassing his capacity to handle it as it gradually inflicted damage on the universe.
As Azure Lion enters the dining table to meet up with his sworn brothers, he suggests they celebrate, but Yellowtusk reminds him that there is little to celebrate. Yellowtusk expresses concern over Azure Lion's ability to contain his power and the potential destruction it may cause. Azure Lion becomes defensive and pulls out the Scroll of Memory, reminding Yellowtusk and Peng that they were locked away in the scroll and that he is responsible for releasing them. Peng tries to steer the conversation away from the past and towards their plans for the future, but Azure Lion becomes distracted upon learning that Wukong is alive. Azure Lion became fixated on killing Monkey King, believing that he is impeding his efforts to remake it. Yellowtusk tries to convince him that there are more important tasks at hand, but Azure Lion draws his sword and teleports them to face Monkey King and the other heroes, preparing to see if Monkey King is truly immortal.
In an endeavor to defeat MK and Monkey King, Azure used the Scroll of Memory to launch an assault on them. With the intention of sparing MK from the same fate as Monkey King, Azure extended a final offer to surrender. However, MK declined, compelling Azure to engage in a fierce combat with both of them. Monkey King countered Azure by summoning the Golden Staff, crushing Azure beneath its weight. Azure harnessed his powers, metamorphosing into a colossal figure as he lifted the Golden Staff off himself and dismantled the Monkey Mech. Without Azure's knowledge, Monkey King acquired the Scroll of Memory, which made him aware of the situation. Azure decided to kill Monkey King once and for all, but MK thwarted Azure's attack.
Azure expressed his lack of trust and belief that Monkey King was not worthy of loyalty, accusing him of being a fraud. MK transformed into his monkey form, resulting in a fierce confrontation between him and Azure. Azure was no match for MK, and his body began to fracture. Azure assumed that MK's monkey form was a result of Monkey King influence, transforming him into a mindless beast. MKrelentlessly assaulted Azure, exposing his treachery until Azure was hurled into the heart of Flower Fruit Mountain. Azure was unable to endure the Power of the Jade Emperor any longer, so he unleashed a surge of energy that began to rip the fabric of the universe apart.
Without Monkey King’s intervention, Azure Lion believed he could fix all the harm done. Nevertheless, MK explained to Azure that he was not to blame. When Monkey King found Azure in his current state, Azure tried to attack him. Monkey King informed Azure that he had won the battle, but at the cost of the universe. Despite this, Azure remained determined to repair the damage and insisted that he had not meant to cause such destruction.
Monkey King questioned Azure Lion about his escape from the Underworld and the theft of the Scroll of Memory. Azure Lion was confused, but Monkey King realized that someone else had given Azure the scroll and warned him that the person intended to destroy the universe, using Azure as a pawn, as the Jade Emperor had warned him before. Azure Lion expressed his remorse and his desire to improve the world. MK encouraged him to take action, as he was the only one who could undo the destruction. Azure restored the universe, but gradually disintegrated. In his final moments, Azure gave MK and Monkey King a tearful smile, accepting his decision and its consequences. Seconds later, he disintegrated completely.

- Like the other characters in Monkie Kid, Azure Lion's minifigure differs from the show, as the black on his torso is portrayed as ink. However, a model sheet made by Christine Wilson indicates that it is, in fact, fur.
- Azure Lion exhibits numerous resemblances to the prior primary antagonists of Monkie Kid.
- The manner in which Azure Lion attends to his sworn brethren is akin to the Demon Bull Family's. Simultaneously, the former aimed to conquer the Celestial Realm, while the latter seeks to conquer the mortal realm.
- Azure Lion's aspiration to conquer the Celestial Realm renders him a pawn for the Nine-Headed Demon, akin to Spider Queen's ambition to rule the mortal realm, which resulted in her being a pawn for Lady Bone Demon.
- Similar to Macaque, Azure Lion initially formed an alliance with Monkey King and regarded him as a companion. However, following Monkey King's loyalty to Tang Sanzang, Azure Lion perceived him as a traitor and adversary. In contrast to Macaque, Azure Lion endeavored to reconcile with Monkey King.
- Similar to Lady Bone Demon, Azure Lion's objectives encompass the realms, advocating for equal treatment of life. Initially, they assisted an emperor, but after witnessing their indifference, Lady Bone Demon sought to obliterate the mortal realm and establish a new one, while Azure Lion aimed to depose the Jade Emperor and install Monkey King. During their service, they allied with others who also betrayed their ruler, leading to the demise of the emperors. Despite imprisonment, they never wavered in their beliefs. Following an initial failure, Azure Lion and Lady Bone Demon rectified their errors and employed formidable tactics. Lady Bone Demon endeavored to utilize Samadhi Fire across all the realms, while Azure Lion employed the Scroll of Memory to depose and slay the Jade Emperor. In contrast to Lady Bone Demon, Azure Lion triumphed. Lady Bone Demon and Azure Lion also deceived MK into believing their benevolence, but later revealed their ulterior motives.
