B.B. is a supporting antagonist in the 2001 video game Max Payne, and the main antagonist of its 2008 film adaptation.
He was a DEA agent who became a mole for the Aesir Corporation to hinder the agency's progress in the Valkyr case, and is pivotal in kickstarting the events of the game by killing Alex Balder.
He was voiced by Adam Grupper and performed by Aki Järvilehto. In the 2008 film adaptation, he was portrayed by Beau Bridges, who also played Clel Waller in NightJohn, Bob Gault in Eden and Roy Gilbert in Bloodline.
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known about B.B.'s past, but at some point he joined the Drug Enforcement Administration around the 1990s. When the DEA started to investigate the Valkyr drug, B.B. became a spy for Nicole Horne and the Aesir Corporation, making sure to prevent the Valkyr case from progressing. It's implied that he was bought by Horne and agreed in exchange for wealth, as he is seen wearing jewelry and clothes that any cop or agent couldn't afford on their salary. Around this point, B.B. became the partner of Alex Balder, and he and Alex were only ones to know that Max Payne had gone undercover.
Max Payne[]
Seeing that Payne was making progress in the case, B.B. decided to get rid of him and Balder before he or Aesir could exposed for their crimes. Contacting the detectives, he sent them to a street station on a lead on Jack Lupino, the underboss of the Punchinello Crime Family. However, B.B. sent them there in hopes they would be killed by the Mafia's men, as the organization had planned a bank robbery and were heading to the station. Despite his plan, Max and Alex survived the shootout, resulting in B.B. himself murdering Balder from behind before leaving the area. Payne was then framed as Balder's murder, and he was forced to evade the New York Police Department while continuing his investigation.
As Payne learned more of Aesir's ties to the Valkyr case, B.B. decided to lure Max out in another attempt to kill him. Contacting Max, B.B. has him meet at a garage where his men would eliminate the agent. Unbeknownst to B.B., Max had deduced that he was one behind Balder's murder and was a mole for the pharmaceutical corporation. When confronted by Payne, B.B. attempts to escape while sending his men to eliminate Max. This fails as his men are killed and B.B.'s car crashes, leaving him no choice but to face the agent by himself. B.B. attempts to kill Payne to no avail, as he is shot and killed.
2008 Film[]
B.B. has a larger role in the 2008 adaptation, acting as the main antagonist of the storyline. Unlike the game, B.B.'s name is revealed to Hensley, and he was the one who murdered Max's wife and child. He's also the head of the Aesir's security, having left the police department after mentoring Payne.
