Badgey was an anthropomorphic holographic antagonist of the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode Terminal Provocations.

He was voiced by Jack McBrayer, who voiced Weird Tom in Odd Squad: The Movie and Charlie Bainbridge in Phineas and Ferb.

Biography[]

Badgey was created by Ensign Sam Rutherford of the USS Cerritos as a tutor for his holodeck training program, and resembled an anthropomorphic Starfleet combadge Badgey was intended to work with trainees in order to guide them through various training scenarios, including spacewalks.

While Rutherford was guiding Ensign D'Vana Tendi through a spacewalk training program, the computer systems on the Cerritos malfunctioned, turning Badgey into a psychopath who was determined to kill both Rutherford and Tendi. When Rutherford switched the program to a Bajoran market Badgey chased them through the market, killing a number of Bajorans in the process.

Rutherford and Tendi fled up a pathway to a monastery on top of a mountain. Realizing that the hologram was also becoming tired due to the physical exertion, Rutherford switched the program to a frozen environment, which eventually caused Badgey to freeze solid. This finally enabled Rutherford to destroy Badgey just before the safety protocols reengaged, after which Badgey rebooted and offered to assist both Rutherford and Tendi, who declined his offer.

Later, needing a computer virus to disable an attacking Pakled vessel, Rutherford reactivated Badgey and disengaged the saftey protocols, allowing Badgey's psychotic tendencies to manifest again. Badgey created a virus to disable the Pakled vessel and using his implants Rutherford carried Badgey's program over to the Pakled vessel and began the process of uploading the virus before Badgey slowed the upload down and activated the ship's self destruct program in order to kill Rutherford. Before that could happen Lieutenant Shaks ripped off Rutherford's implant and put him on the shuttle they arrived in, and pushed the shuttle free of the Pakled ship. The ship self destructed a few seconds later, killing Shaks in the process.

In a post-credits scene in the Season 3 finale, "The Stars at Night", an unknown party locates Rutherford's old implant (still floating in the space junk) and beams it up. While it's being beamed up, it briefly flashes with Badgey on screen, revealing that he did in fact survive the prior events.

In Season 4 Episode 7, "A Few Badges More", after being salvaged by the Drookmani, Badgey deceived the captain in order to seize control of the ship and exact his final revenge on Lieutenant Rutherford. With a recent Bynar ship's destruction, Badgey used it to fake a distress call near the Cerritos' location in order to give Starfleet a reason to send it instead of a more notable ship. Using his knowledge of Starfleet systems he abused every weak point in the Cerritos' shields to draw out Lieutenant Rutherford, causing him to leave the Cerritos to take action. However, unbeknownst to Badgey, Rutherford choose to reconcile with him rather than engage him. This caused Badgey to learn forgiveness and he briefly began to accept Rutherford's proposal for peace. Unfortunately his desire for revenge was as great as his forgiveness, causing Badgey to partition himself, thus creating Goodgey. Badgey then returned his attention to the assault on the Cerritos, once more drawing Rutherford out of hiding. Once again however, Rutherford attempted a new approach, this time appealing to Badgey's A.I. logic-minded nature and like before caused Badgey to briefly cease his attack before partitioning himself again, this time creating Logic-y. Badgey changed his strategy after this, instead attempting to breach all electronic devices across the subspace network, thereby becoming a digital god in which he was successful. After doing so however, Badgey realized the pointlessness of his actions up to this point and the beauty of life, synthetic or organic, and chose instead to utilize his godhood to travel to an empty dimension in which he could create his own universe.

Trivia[]

  • Badgey was a parody of the widely unpopular Office Assistant virtual assistant included in Microsoft software at the turn of the 21st century.
