| ~ Bagoo before fighting Klonoa and Huepow |
Bagoo, true identity The King of Despair, is the hidden main antagonist of Klonoa: Empire of Dreams, a spinoff puzzle-platformer game in the Klonoa series by Namco. He initially appears to be the minister/advisor to Emperor Jillius, but in fact, he is actually an eldritch abomination who wants to turn every resident of the Empire of Dreams into monsters.
Biography[]
Klonoa: Empire of Dreams[]
The King of Despair invaded Jillius's empire one day, disguising himself as the helpful minister Bagoo and taking his place at Emperor Jillius's side. He then cursed Jillius with insomnia to give Jillius a hatred of dreams. (Since Jillius couldn't have any dreams of his own.)
When Klonoa entered the Empire of Dreams by dreaming, he was immediately arrested and brought before Jillius and Bagoo. Bagoo advocated for Klonoa to be punished harshly, but Jillius decided to give Klonoa a chance to prove himself worthy of freedom by defeating the monsters invading the Empire of Dreams.
Klonoa and Huepow went around the Empire, defeating each monster. Upon defeat, each monster turned back into a normal citizen of the Empire, who explained to Klonoa that they had no memories of turning into monsters because it had happened while they were asleep.
Klonoa and Huepow returned to the empire's capital, where they mistakenly believed that Jillius was responsible for turning everyone into monsters. Jillius was possessed by a strange eyeball creature and battled Klonoa and Huepow.
After that battle, Bagoo came forward and revealed that he was not only the mastermind behind the monster transformations, but also a disguised monster himself. The King of Despair revealed his true form and announced his intentions to turn Klonoa and Huepow into monsters as well. However, Klonoa and Huepow defeated him after one final battle, ending the King of Despair's reign of terror.
Klonoa Beach Volleyball[]
An alternate version of Bagoo makes a a cameo in the spinoff sports game Klonoa Beach Volleyball. Bagoo appears in Tat's ending as a shopkeeper who is robbed by Tat and Leorina. Interestingly, this version of Bagoo seems to lack any evil or supernatural traits.
Appearance[]
In his disguised form, Bagoo is an anthropomorphic, tannish-yellow tapir-like creature with a large, pointy snout. He wears a green priestly robe with a green headdress and a red stole.
In his true form, the King of Sorrow is an enormous, bird/dragonlike monster made of a thick, shiny, silver liquid.
Personality[]
Bagoo initially appears to be a stern, stodgy old minister. As Jillius's trusted advisor, he is confident in his ability to manipulate Jillius, and he is shocked when Jillius goes against his advice to punish Klonoa.
Behind the Bagoo disguise, the King of Despair is an ethereal, sinister being with a megalomaniacal desire to turn everyone in the world into monsters.
Trivia[]
- Bagoo is based on the baku, a yokai from Japanese mythology that is said to eat nightmares. Bagoo's Japanese name, Bakuu, makes the connection especially clear.
