Bakekujira are a type of malevolent yokai found in Japanese folklore. They are large skeleton ghost whales accompanied by strange birds and fish that are said to bring pestilences, diseases, and natural disasters.
History[]
The Bakekujira entice hunters by floating to the top of the water at night and in the rain, in order to mask their supernatural qualities. Upon seeing them, hunters are often compelled to try to harpoon it, but then realize their mistake upon hitting reanimated bone. They sea is then swarmed by monstrous fish as the sky is blotted out by unsettling birds, neither of which are recognizable to man.
The Bakekujira then drifts towards the horizon, followed by the beasts that accompany it. By this pint it has inflicted the hunters with deadly curses, to which they unknowingly carry this curse to their villages. Villages inflicted with the curse Bakekujira give are often the victims of famine, disease outbreaks, and natural disasters.
