Assemble the Baker's Dozen!
~ Big Jack Horner enlists the help of the Baker's Dozen in his search for the Wishing Star.

The Baker's Dozen are supporting antagonists in DreamWorks' 43rd feature-length animated feature Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, a spin-off of the Shrek franchise.

They are a group of bakers who are also the henchmen of Big Jack Horner. They aid Jack in his quest to find the Wishing Star, which will enable him to gain power.

They were voiced by Betsy Sodaro, James Ryan, Joel Crawford, Januel P. Mercado, Natalia Croembord, Aydrea Walden, and Paul Fisher.

Appearance[]

The Baker's Dozen all wear white chef outfits, and they all wield makeshift weapons that resemble baking utensils and kitchen tools such as a tenderiser mallet and a mixer chainsaw. A number of them have tattoos and unusual haircuts as well, making them look slightly post-apocalyptic.

History[]

In the movie, the Baker's Dozen are the staff members of the Jack Horner Pie Co. (some of the bakers are female), where they bake pies that the Horner family had created. When the map to the Wishing Star is stolen by Puss and Kitty, Big Jack Horner gathers the Baker's Dozen and sets out to find them, deep into the Dark Forest. They almost immediately stumble upon a valley of flowers, one of Perrito's paths, which instantly attacks them, kills one of them (baker #3), but eventually overcoming the path thanks to Jack Horner using the Phoenix to burn the flowers.

Immediately Jack and the Baker's Dozen reach Puss and Kitty near the river kidnapping Perrito to have the map delivered, but as soon as Goldilocks and the Three Bears arrive, a battle begins for all against all during which Jack, in an attempt to hit Puss with the horns of the unicorns, kills three of his men (bakers #6, #10 and #11) by exploding them in confetti. Eventually the map is stolen by Goldilocks, who creates a new path by separating from the other two groups.

While Jack Horner waits for the cats to steal the map from the Three Bears, he continues his journey in the Dark Forest, and to overcome a ravine he uses some of his men as bridge, leaving the Ethical Bug astonished, who is trying to bring out the good in there in him. When Jack lets his carriage pass, however, it brings down the bridge of men and most of the Baker's Dozen, who fall to their deaths except for one (who was on the carriage) who manages to remain anchored to the ravine. Jack, after having flicked away the Ethical Bug who has understood that the man has no hope of redemption, pulls her up and together they reach the Wishing Star, where they find Puss, Kitty, Perrito, Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

The final battle ensues for the map, and during it the last of the Baker's Dozen (baker #13), in an attempt to attack Kitty, is struck by Jack Horner's magic staff, ending up against the edge of the star and crumbling while calling Jack Horner for help.

Trivia[]

  • The group's name is based on the phrase "baker's dozen", which is used to represent a group of 13 objects.
  • If one would count every baker (even though the whole group died) that died throughout the movie, it would result as follows:
    • 1 (baker #3) died against the demon posies.
    • 3 (bakers #6, #10 and #11) were shot by Big Jack Horner during the battle at the River of Relaxation
    • 8 (bakers #1, #2, #4, #5, #7, #8, #9 and #12) were used as a bridge in order for Jack Horner's tank to pass the pit, only for them to fall to their death.
    • The last of them (#13) was disintegrated in one of the Wishing Star's walls  after being accidentally shot by Jack Horner.
  • In the Puss in Boots short The Trident, chronicling Puss's fifth death, not only does the Trident of Poseidon, a relic later found in Jack Horner's collection, appear, but two of the pirates appear to be the same person as Bakers #5 and #11, implying that when Jack collected the Trident later, he hired them to be part of his gang.
