Balam is a demon-king who served as a major antagonist B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth— The Exorcist and supporting antagonist B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know — Pandemonium.
Biography[]
The Exorcist[]
Balam was once a respected King of Hell, but he was summoned and bound by Eustace Coupland from Yamsay, Oregon. Coupland demanded from the demon where he could find riches in the earth around Yamsay, and in return he would give the demon a fresh soul (that of a child) as sustenance once a year and at the end of his life Coupland would also free him. The human though double crossed Balam, dying of old age without releasing the demon. Despite this betrayal, Balam started to use his demonic powers to influence the daughter of Eustace to lure more souls of children towards him. This influence continued even after the death of the Coupland-daughter, who became a ghost that still lured children during the Ogdru Hem-crisis. Eventually he heard of the death of Satan and most of the other demon-lords, hoping to escape and consolidate more power.
He was eventually discovered by B.P.R.D.-agent and exorcist Ashley Strode, and Balam wanted to use her body as a vessel to escape Coupland's sigil. Strode refused this idea and began to battle the demon, managing to summon a fiery-sword from the spiritual realm to battle the demon and eventually decapitated him with the weapon. With the death of Balam as the souls of the children he had consumed were freed and seemingly ascended into Heaven.
The Devil You Know[]
Following the death of Nunn-Jahad, Balam was later revealed to be alive, and was summoned by the demon Yomyael (while possessing Varvara) alongside Earl of Hell Bifrons. Yomyael sought to rebuild Pandemonium on Earth. The three of them were the last leaders from original Court of the Fly (the most high-ranking demons), and Yomyael hoped to make Earth their new home, and re-enslave the lesser devils of the Hell.
The three demons resided in the ruins of New York City to discuss their potential future plans. Unlike Bifrons, Balam seemed more supportive to Yomayel. He, Yomyael and Herman von Klempt remained in the city, while Bifrons led an aerial assault against the forces of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Bifrons was killed by B.P.R.D.-agent Liz Sherman and strike team led by Hellboy and Abe Sapien entered the city, where the two would battle Balam, while Ashley Strode tried to exorcise Yomyael out of Varvara. With Abe Sapien was Balam down, Hellboy managed to kill the demon, and shortly after Ashley Strode managed to kill Yomyael as well.
With the deaths of Yomyael, Bifrons and Balam, it appears that the leadership of the demons was permanently extinguished, though the B.P.R.D. soon had to worry about an resurrected Rasputin and return of the Ogdru-Jahad.
