Welcome to Baldi's Basics In Education & Learning! That's me!
~ Baldi's introduction on the title screen.
Oh, hi! Welcome to my schoolhouse!
~ Baldi welcomes the player.
Congratulations, you found all seven notebooks! Now all you need to do is... GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!! Heh heh heeeeeeh!
~ Baldi threatening the player once they have collected all of the seven notebooks

Professor Baldi Baldimore, more simply known as Baldi, is the titular main antagonist of Baldi's Basics series. He is a teacher who appears friendly and kind at first but gets angry and violent when the player gets his quiz questions wrong and smacks them with a ruler if he catches them.

He was voiced by the game's creator Micah "Mystman12" McGonigal, who also voiced It's a Bully in the same game.

Personality[]

Baldi originally appears as a supportive and helpful teacher, as he helps to guide the player. He was constantly happy until the player makes a mistake with his math question, even if the question is considered unanswerable. Once the player makes the mistake, Baldi's happy face turns into an angry one. He is later shown to be quite cruel and abusive when he inflicts a penalty on the player as retribution for an incorrect answer.

Despite his manipulative and treacherous nature, he is also shown to be pleasurable when he congratulates the player after the seven books are all collected. However, Baldi soon threatened them to get out while they can and starts chasing them immediately afterward.

When playing the game in "Endless Mode", Baldi will make the effort to temporarily slow his pursuit of the player depending on how many problems the player got right.

Appearance[]

Baldi is a tall, slender humanoid with long arms, fair skin, huge blue (visibly black) eyes, red lips, and thin brown eyebrows. He has a big smile on his face (before engaging the player) and his mouth is incredibly red. He wears a long-sleeved green shirt, blue pants, and light brown shoes. Despite being seen as bald, he has one string of brown hair, which is often mistaken for a third eyebrow.

When pursuing the player, Baldi's facial expression goes from a big smile to being completely neutral.

Biography[]

Origin[]

BaldiHD

The cover-art of the self made comic by Mystman12.

Before Baldi's Basics In Education & Learning was released, Baldi was actually created many years ago by Mystman12. His sister created her own comic, which gave him the inspiration to create his own comic, which he named the character Baldimore.

The comic got the name from Baldi being bald, and it is about Baldi always wanting more food. In one scene, Baldi is seen trying to eat the planet Earth.

Role[]

At the start of the game, Baldi greets the player with a wave and welcomes them to the school. He then lets the player find the first notebook, which he will let them take if they do a quick pop quiz. If the player completes the first quiz without getting any problems wrong, Baldi will reward the player with a shiny Quarter that can be used later in the game to activate the Noise Phone or to purchase a BSoda from a BSoda Machine.

However, after missing a problem on the next quiz (this is inevitable), Baldi will suddenly become very angry. The notebook will be collected, but Baldi will become enraged and attempt to punish the player for getting the problem wrong by chasing them down across the school to beat them with a yardstick and presumably kill them. Getting caught by Baldi restarts the game. The player must traverse the school and avoid Baldi and the other enemies while collecting notebooks. Baldi can hear any door opened, and will come to the source of the noise, though using loud objects such as the alarm clock and tape can distract him, and using WD-NoSquee on doors before opening them will ensure that Baldi cannot hear them.

The player must complete a quiz every time they attempt to get a notebook. When they get a problem wrong (this is inevitable again), Baldi will quicken his pace and become harder to avoid. After collecting all seven notebooks, Baldi will congratulate the player, then scream and threaten them to get out while they still can (However, as revealed in Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, the "GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!" line is spoken by an entity named Null, who interrupts Baldi, as Baldi actually says, "Find a way out before I catch you!"). He becomes extremely fast, and will constantly be near the player. And so, if the player is caught by Arts and Crafters during the pursuit, they will be teleported back to the start with Baldi close by, all but guaranteeing a game over. During this time, the exit will constantly appear and disappear in different areas around the school, making escape difficult.

However, if the player manages to locate the exit, they will escape from Baldi and the school and win the game. There is a secret scene if the player gets every question wrong in all seven notebooks, which says to go to Baldi's Office for improvement. In Baldi's Basics Classic and Classic Remastered, they will find Null in Baldi's Office, who will congratulate the player in finding him, before going on to tell them to destroy the game. In Classic Remastered, after Null is defeated, Baldi will replace Null in his office, teaching the player advice on subtraction.

Field Trip Demo[]

In the minigame, Baldi takes the player camping in the woods and leaves the player to gather sticks for the campfire as he goes set up bear traps. If the fire goes out before time runs out, Baldi spawns at the campfire and almost immediately catches the player. Currently, the game is still in under-development.

Birthday Bash[]

In celebratory to the one-year anniversary of his game, Baldi invites the player back to the school. He will still attempt to attack the player after getting a question wrong, but once all seven notebooks are collected, Baldi and the other residents of Here School shout "Surprise!" once the player reaches the cafeteria exit. Baldi tells the player to step on a lift and blow out the candle on a large cake. Once the candle is blown out, the lights dim and everyone is lifted into the air, forcing the player to a hallway full of glitched rooms.

The glitched rooms contain corrupted files resembling colored Baldis that do not harm the player. One of these rooms is Baldi's Office. The player must count the Baldis based on their color in buttons in one room littered with balloons; should they do it correctly, Baldi shouts "Wow!" before a room opens. Stepping into the room spawns multiple hostile colored versions of Baldi, forcing them to run. Once enough time has passed, a distorted "thank you" screen appears featuring Baldi and the others.

An alternate ending can be found in Birthday Bash if the player were to use a "Teleportation Teleporter" to get back to the first floor. However, obtaining the teleporter is very hard, as this item has a very low spawn rate, and can only be obtained from the vending machines. Once inside the Principal's Office, the player will find either Null or Baldi, depending on the game. In Birthday Bash, the player will find Null in the office, who will once again congratulate the player in finding him, before going on to explain that Birthday Bash is a demo for Baldi's Basics Plus, before telling the player to destroy the game once again. In Classic Remastered, after Null is defeated, Baldi will take his place, and if the player goes to the Principal's Office again, Baldi will let them listen to music he made.

Public Demo[]

In the public demo for the full game, Baldi wants to play hide-and-seek with the player, and chases after them once they walk a good distance away. Much like the original version, as the player collects notebooks, Baldi gets much faster, until his speed becomes so fast that it becomes almost impossible to escape without a strategy. In one of the random events, Baldi breaks his ruler, causing the player to stop hearing him approach for several seconds. If the player has collected an apple by the time Baldi catches them, he will eat the apple, stopping for ten seconds to eat before continuing chasing the player.

Kickstarter Exclusive Demo[]

In the Kickstarter Exclusive demo, Baldi will behave exactly the same in the Public Demo. The player will have to beat him at Hide-and-Seek in 3 different floors in the Super Schoolhouse. After this is done, the player will be taken to a black room, with Baldi standing before them. Turning around will reveal text saying:

"Some day, you will get the satisfying, canonical, and exciting ending that you deserve."

"Today is not that day."

When the player turns back around, Baldi will dab for a few seconds, before the game ends.

In the demo's new Farm field trip, if the player runs out of time for getting to the flag in the corn maze, a massive Gotta Sweep (officially named Gotta Reap) will being to destroy the entire maze, before Baldi begins chasing the player.

Plus[]

In Baldi's Basics Plus, the gameplay is exactly the same as the Kickstarter Exclusive Demo, with the player required to beat Baldi at Hide-and-Seek once again. This time around, the player will be taken to Baldi's Office upon beating floor 3, where Baldi will dance and sing a song, congratulating them at beating the game. A few seconds after the song ends, the game will pseudo-corrupt, and the player will be taken back to the title screen.

In version 0.3, the field trips have been reworked, with Baldi having new roles in them. Instead of chasing the player if they fail the objective, Baldi will teach the player how each field trip works, before either standing idly (Camping), or sliding off-screen (Farm). If the player messes up at any point, Baldi will say "Ohhh..." in disappointment and bend over (Camping only), before encouraging the player to try again.

Classic Remastered[]

In Classic Remastered, Baldi's behavior is relatively the same in Classic and Birthday Bash, with the game's Demo Style including a new alternate ending where he is featured. If the player is able to answer all the Math Machines correctly, and then answer 6 bonus questions correctly, they will be given a Portal Poster, where they will then need to use it in the classroom with the Safety Scissors poster in it. This will reveal a ladder leading to Baldi's Basement. Here, before Null is defeated, when the player enters a room with a shrink machine in it, Null will appear behind them, asking them why they haven't destroyed the game yet, before going on to explain that he knows that they want to figure out the game's lore. After Null is defeated, Baldi will appear in his shrink machine when the player enters the room, and will let them help him test it. Once the button is pressed, the machine will make some strange sounds, before the sound of an explosion is heard, and Baldi is heard screaming. The door then opens, revealing a soot-covered Baldi standing there, explaining that the machine still needs a "few tweaks".

Baldi is heard one more time after reaching the normal ending of Demo Style, where he will ask the player if they thought Demo Style was fun, before going on to explain that there's more fun to be had in Baldi's Basics Plus, before Plus' promotion is shown.

Quotes[]

Oh, hi! Welcome to my schoolhouse!
~ Baldi greeting the player after entering the schoolhouse.
You need to collect two notebooks before you can use these doors.
~ Baldi when the player attempts to open one of the side doors.
Now it's time for everybody's favorite subject: Math! Answer the three questions correctly, and you might get something special!
~ Baldi when the player interacts with a notebook.
Just type the correct answer into the empty box. Press the ENTER key on your keyboard when you think you have the right answer.
~ Baldi explaining how to use the You Can Think Pad.
You did great! Come here and get your prize! A shiny quarter! Just click on it with the left mouse button to pick it up! Then, when you find something you can use it on, right click on the object with the quarter selected! That's how you use items, you know.
~ Baldi offering the player a quarter if they correctly answer all three questions in the first notebook.

Trivia[]

  • Baldi seems to be completely unaware that some of his questions cannot be answered. Whether this is actually the case or not is up to debate, though.
  • In reality, physical punishment in schools like harming students (including with a ruler) for doing something wrong or getting the answer wrong was allowed and common between the 19th and 20th century until this action became completely illeagal, specifically in western countries sometime around the 1980s depending on the region, and since then is completely seen as a crime if teachers were to do so. Save for this still being a thing to this day in some african and asian regions.
  • Baldi seems to be the only real staff in the school besides Principal of the Thing and Mrs. Pomp. He seems to only really know math and seems to have an obsession with it.
  • Baldi's appearance kind of resembles the avatar of the YouTube channel, surreal entertainment, except that SE's avatar has hair.
  • Mystman12's first drawings of Baldi were from a poorly drawn comic that he made called "Baldimore". Although this is unconfirmed, "Baldimore" might be his real name.
  • Even though Baldi does not own the school, he still refers to the school as his own.
  • Although his description says he has an excellent sense of hearing, Baldi does not have visible ears on his model. Additionally, many items found in the game can distract or outright nullify Baldi's hearing temporarily.
  • While Baldi moves faster for every problem the player gets wrong, he slowly reverts to a normal pacing speed depending on how many notebooks were collected as long as the player avoids him.
    • Prior to version 1.3 of Baldi's Basics Classic, Baldi would remain at a fast speed no matter how long the player avoids him. After twelve or more questions are wrong, Baldi becomes so fast that he could catch up to the player in seconds.
  • Baldi appears to be a parody of Slender Man, as both are, tall, thin, bald villains who teleport after the protagonist and who has several pages that the player needs to find.
