Villain Overview

Welcome to Baldi's Basics In Education & Learning! That's me!
~ Baldi's introduction on the title screen, as well as an iconic line from the series.

Congratulations, you found all seven notebooks! Now all you need to do is...

GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!
HAHAHAAA!

~ Baldi's villainous breakdown and most famous quote, as he threatens the unnamed Explorer Student once he has collected all seven notebooks, being mind-controlled by Null.

Professor Baldi Baldimore, simply known by his first name Baldi, is the titular main antagonist of the Baldi's Basics series.

Like his original comic strip counterpart, he is an inventor living in the city of Baltimore and is depicted as a young man who would break the fourth wall for the reader and eat more of what he wants. During his life in the 1980s, Baldi was shown to be a hot-tempered person such as being denied all of his cookies and throwing tantrums at people who had hair, because his hair did not grow and was considered unnatural. Despite his hot-tempered nature, he still feels remorse for his actions and has redeemable qualities. At one point in his life, he became a superhero, earning his nickname as Baldiman, and would help and assist anyone in trouble.

A few years later, he founded two elementary schools, where he is depicted as a calm and encouraging head teacher to his students. However, a small change reveals a more sinister side to his personality when one of his students makes his first mistake on the first day in 1999. On the second day, it is revealed that the underlying personality of Baldi is that he is being mind-controlled by the corrupted entity Null, which causes him to be tortured by the entity because he does not want to hurt his students. By the 2000s, he was freed from mind control by the entity.

He is voiced by the game's creator Micah James "Mystman12" McGonigal, who voices most of the characters in the same series, with exceptions being 1st Prize, Johnny, Mrs. Pomp, and Beans (excluding voiceless characters).

Appearance[]

Baldi slap hand

Baldi slaping his ruler.

In contrast to his original comic strip counterpart, this Baldi has a plainly colored appearance in the game, although his youth in the comic strip heptalogy is also similar to that in the original comic strip series. He is a humanoid man with light skin, long, thin fingers, red lips, eyebrows, and a single strand of hair on his head that appears orange/red. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and light brown shoes. His left elbow is gray in the original game and Birthday Bash, and blue in Plus. Like his original comic strip counterpart, although he does not have visible ears, his poster mentions that he has an excellent sense of hearing.

Baldi's facial expression when chasing the player is neutral and does not show anger, although his expression is very compressed and distorted. This is most likely due to dithering.

Personality[]

Baldi comic 20180619

Baldi discusses himself as a young man.

Like his original comic strip counterpart, when he was a young man in the heptalogy of comic strips, Baldi was a good-natured guy who liked to break the fourth wall, although he could get angry easily or to the point of violence such as in Baldi Hair where he threatened to burn everyone's hair. However, despite his hot-tempered personality, he actually felt remorse for his actions towards others and had to correct and take responsibility for his mistakes. Despite his temporary setbacks, he is also a very intelligent man, able to create things that are wrong, like his original counterpart did and even break the fourth wall in an efficient manner.

He also has a heroic nature as shown in the Baldiman comics, where he became a superhero and would help a young boy with the ability to create anything such as Jackhammer99, although he once made a mistake when he accidentally told the boy that the tool would cut off someone's toes. It is also implied that during his time as a superhero, Baldi seems to have helped and rescued several people in his neighborhood, as well as facing several enemies that attacked the earth. That's why Baldi is popular today.

Like his original counterpart, Baldi also has a big appetite and loves to create various things in his spare time, such as Jackhammer99, You Can Think Pad, math machines, fog machines, a kind of gravity reversal machine, Portal Poster, shrinking machines, and others.

Great teacher due to his incredible hearing abilities! He can not only tell where any sound came from, but who made it too!
~ Description of Baldi himself, as an adult.
Baldi frown

Baldi got angry as adult.

During his adult life in the game, Baldi is shown to have matured and changed, as well as being a friendly and popular teacher, as the students and other staff refer to him as "Great Teacher" as evidenced by his poster in the Principal's office. He is also shown to be very brave and defensive when helping others in both of his school buildings, as if a thief were to rob Johnny's store, he would come and arrest the thief for any stolen goods. He does not do many of the silly things he did when he was a young man, or even show much emotion towards others in general, also implying that Baldi cares a lot about young children.

However, unlike his original comic strip counterpart, he is later shown to be a rather cruel and abusive head teacher; hitting his students with his ruler if they do not answer math problems correctly, fining his staff if they do not follow school rules, and he considers all of the other staff to be weak. Baldi is also shown to be quite supportive of his students, as he has helped and rescued them when they were in trouble, much like he did when he was a young superhero, or giving Explorer Student a Quarter after he answered three math problems in his first notebook. He is also shown to be a manipulative teacher, having Explorer Student take his friend's first notebook and have his math problems answered by his students. Baldi is also shown to be lovable when he congratulates Explorer Student after he has collected all seven of his friends' notebooks. However, he soon threatens his student to get out while he can.

Despite his treacherous nature, he actually knows how to apologize and be polite to his students and staff in school, and he has to overcome his anger issues. This is shown in the description of the Camping Field Trip in Plus, where he only gets upset when you put the wrong fuel in and asks you to try again. Baldi's entire personality throughout the series after Explorer Student collects all seven of his unnamed friend's notebooks on the first day is that his mind has been controlled by the corrupted entity Null. As shown in several secret endings in the main series; hacking him into a giant, ordering him to capture Explorer Student, and even worse, locking him in a development room, thus subjecting him to torture by the entity.

After Null disappeared from the game world, Baldi's persona as a manipulative and backstabbing teacher finally ended after he was freed from Null's mind control. Although he did chase Explorer Student, he was very kind to him in the secret ending of Classic Remastered after NULL Style was defeated; explaining negative numbers to his student, playing a special song for him, and allowing him to help him test his new Shrinking Machine in Classic Style, Party Style, and Demo Style as an apology for his previous behavior and atonement for his sins.

Powers and Abilities[]

Being a concept of mathematics itself, Baldi is an extremely powerful entity. Although his power when he was young is still ambiguous, the powers shown by Baldi's greater feats include:

  • Mathekinesis: Baldi's true essence is the realm of nothingness, an extradimensional void which are at once a type of magic system as well as the being's actual power. All of his abilities can be described as very basic forms of mathematical manipulation, but he can use them more directly to distort questions or change the laws of mathematical concepts.
  • Fourth Wall Awareness: Baldi seems to be aware of his nature as a fictional character. He often tries to interact with the comic's readers by starting dialogue, referring to the fourth wall, and other silly things that highlight his odd nature. He is also shown explaining the controls to the player playing the game's main character, Explorer Student, and once said that the Demo Style of the Classic Remastered was a demo for Plus, as well as promoting the latter style at the end.
  • Food Affinity: Baldi has an unusual hunger. He is always eating everything he sees, as shown in the Pick-Quick-Nic minigame from Plus. During the minigame, he will think of one or more foods that he wants to eat and if a covered plate is opened he will immediately eat it with gusto. Despite being very hungry and eating a lot, Baldi still has a skinny body. This may mean that he has trouble gaining weight, or simply has a fast digestive system.
  • Object Creation: As Baldiman, he can create anything he wants such as a Jackhammer99 that functions as a toenail clipper (or accidentally cut off a toe) and a bat with a rusty blade glued on. It is implied that after retiring from being a superhero, Baldi can create anything again during his adult life, as this is explained in the description of the Portal Poster item in Johnny's store or some of his inventions that he has made.
  • Shapeshifting: Baldi can shapeshift into a sharp-toothed monster, when he becomes angry about not getting enough cookies in his younger years. It is likely that during his superhero alter ego, he often uses this power to fight some of his toughest enemies. However, it is unknown if he is able to shapeshift again or not as an adult.
  • Technopathy: Baldi can read minds through the workings of technology at his will. He often uses it to learn the fears of his students or other staff in the school and exploits this with his ability to distort in the third You Can Think math problem. Baldi also communicates through his TV monitor as a notification of information and/or threats to his students or other staff.
  • Soundbending: He can also cause the sounds he makes to echo further than they should, can distort voices and their sounds after the seven notebooks are collected.
  • Physical Illusions: Baldi is able to create physical illusions such as fake exits and turning his school red, after the player collects all seven notebooks. This power is meant to punish the students in the school from escaping. It should be noted that this does not mean he wants to kill them, as it is heavily implied that he turns his students into objects (if he catches the player and causes a game over) while he is mind-controlled by Null.
  • Void Creation: Baldi is also able to create a void like in the secret ending of the original Baldi's Basics game. After the player makes it to the final exit, a white void will appear, with a message from Baldi that he wants to fix, in front of his office. It is believed that he can also use this to lock up his students and other staff at school as punishment. Baldi usually uses this power in conjunction with time manipulation if he manages to catch the player.
  • Time Control: Baldi is able to manipulate and restart the timeline at will. However, this only applies when he successfully catches the player who caused the game to over.
  • Physical Distortion: to be added
  • Invulnerability: Baldi is neither a human nor a physical entity, so he cannot be killed or harmed by conventional means. The only known way to harm him is to steal his true power, which is heavily implied to be Null stealing his true power with his glitch ability. Before Null disappears from the game, he will punish Baldi by hacking him, rendering him powerless if he does not catch him and, heavily implied, turning the Explorer Student into an object. Null likens to Baldi that he is computer code.
  • Immortality: Baldi's virtual earthly avatar has existed on Earth for thousands if not millions of years. His true power has existed even longer in the void that was most likely created by his parents. Deleting or hacking are the only known ways to destroy the earthly avatar, if it were to occur. However, it is heavily implied that his true power still exists in the void and is eternal and can never be truly destroyed. This means that Baldi could send another physical vessel of himself to revive him at a later date.
  • Regeneration: He can also regenerate rapidly when injured. This is shown when Baldi instantly heals after being squished by Dr. Reflex during his anger.
  • Transmutation: It is heavily implied that Baldi can turn his students or other people into objects with a slap of his ruler, as shown in the original Baldi's Basics game and the Birthday Bash game over, where if Baldi manages to catch the player some of the objects (depending on the game over) are the bodies of Explorer Student.
  • Events Altering: Baldi can change events in both of his schools such as broken rulers, floods, fog, gravity chaos, mystery rooms, parties in the Principal's office, and test procedures.
  • Teleportation: He can also teleport between locations in an instant. During Plus, he is present in front of his bus to take the player on a field trip though also plays his cruel hide and seek inside his school and during Classic Remastered, despite floating in the cafeteria due to a glitch, he can also be seen cowering in a hidden room, as well as waiting for the player in the Principal's office so he can play a special secret song.
  • Superhuman Strength: While it is clear that Baldi does not kill his students, his physical strength is shown to be very strong. He is able to break his ruler during the Broken Ruler event in the Plus and Demo Style of the Classic Remastered, and lift players resulting in a game over, as well as kick them out of the game.
  • Superhuman Speed: Baldi's speed has no limit in endless mode, allowing him to go even faster. This would give him unlimited stamina to reach high speeds. Baldi is also able to eat apples very quickly, which would also help him with his combat speed.
  • Superhuman Agility: Baldi is shown to be very agile, as he is always looking at the player and in the ending of Plus, he can basically move his body using a glitch, despite being a 2D model.
  • Reality Influencing: to be added

Trivia[]

  • This version of Baldi is one of four and the only character in the game series that was created many years ago, specifically between the 2000s and 2010s. The others being his original comic strip counterpart, the original comic strip Dr. Reflex, Susan, and his son in the original comic strip, Andrew.
  • Due to his full name being named after his original comic strip counterpart, this version of Baldi is the only human character in the game series to have a clearly stated full name.
    • Before his last name was confirmed, Baldi was commonly called "Baldi's Basics" (the title of the game itself) or "Baldi Baldington" by fans.
  • This version of Baldi when he transforms into a sharp-toothed monster is loosely inspired by the comic book called "Beastly Beastly" created by Cady Ann Bradshaw, sister of Mystman12, with monster-like characters.
  • The audio for Baldi slapping his ruler was made by mystman12 slapping his hand with a plastic ruler, despite Baldi using a wooden one in the game.
  • Teachers doing any sort of action that involves harming students is well notably illegal nowadays in reality. However, this was common and accepted by law between the 19th and 20th century, where teachers would beat students with objects, such as canes and rulers if they did something wrong or broke the rules. This was until it got banned in most countries around the 1980s. However, this is still a thing in some African and Asian regions (e.g. in Indonesia or in Kenya).
  • Despite Baldi being the official head teacher and original founder of both of his school buildings, it is implied that the Principal of the Thing is also a co-founder of both of his boss's school buildings, as after Baldi retired from being a superhero he and the Principal had met early on and they worked together to build both school buildings.
  • Although Baldi is an immortal entity created from the concept of mathematics itself, making him ageless and have an infinite lifespan. Mystman12 has confirmed that Baldi is 29-3X years old and his birthday is June 3rd. Since the game series takes place in the 1999-2000s, it is implied that he was born and created in 1970.
  • Originally, Mystman12 intended for this version of Baldi to teach more subjects besides math in the original game. However, due to time constraints in the Meta Game Jam, and also to be fair to international players, he eventually decided to stick with just one subject.
  • This also means that the game version of Baldi is one of four characters in the game series who knows about math and is obsessed with it. The others being Principal of the Thing, Mrs. Pomp, Dr. Reflex, and Gotta Sweep.
    • In addition to math, this Baldi also loves science, even though it involves a lot of math.
  • It is possible Baldi liking apples is inspired by the stereotype of teachers loving apples.
  • The game version of Baldi has several inspirations from other media such as:
    • Sonic from Sonic's Schoolhouse, as both teach their students, give them instructions, and some of their inventions are similar.
      • Interestingly, the image of Baldi giving a thumbs up when the original game was downloaded over 100,000 times is a reference to Sonic's screen shot when completing a level with 10/10 correct answers.
    • Flippy/Fliqpy from Happy Tree Friends, as both coincidentally wear something green and were originally heroes turned villains, although this has not been confirmed.
    • Waluigi from Super Mario franchise, as both are tall, skinny, and talk like an older man who will trick the protagonist.
    • Slender Man, as both are tall, skinny, bald villains and god-like entities who teleport after the protagonist and have several pages for the player to find.
  • The game version of Baldi is one of three favorite characters from Mystman12. The others being his original comic strip counterpart and Gotta Sweep.
  • The animation of his right arm looks very unnaturally bent, most likely meaning that Baldi has double joints. This animation was actually a mistake, but it was used in the game anyways due to its more jarring appearance.
    • Baldi's waving animation is smoother than other games and demos due to it having all 99 frames, where the animation's total amount of frames were halved in Plus and Classic Remastered.
  • Many fans thought that Baldi said "You failed all seven notebooks!" in the original game and Birthday Bash. However, Mystman12 has confirmed that it is "found" and not "failed", and that he was completely unaware of the debate before being asked about it.
  • When Baldi frowns upon the player incorrectly answering a question for the first time before starting his chase, his lips seem to break on the sides.
  • Although the game version of Baldi is based on of his original comic strip counterpart, in terms of personality and character, there are several differences between the two versions:
    • In the original comic strip series, Baldi is depicted as a man who is always oblivious to his surroundings such as TimTom throwing balls at him and eating his wife's hairbrush. In the game series, however, Baldi is depicted as a young adult man who is aware of his surroundings through his sense of hearing. This is shown by his poster in the Principal's office.
    • Baldi has two professions in the game series, an inventor and a head teacher.
    • In the original comic strip series, Baldi's motivation is to eat as much as he sees. In the game series, Baldi's motivation as a young man is to help and save others when they are in trouble, although this is still implied, and as an adult to teach his students as much as possible, although he was once a traitorous teacher before finally atoning for his sins after he was freed from Null's mind control.
    • In the original comic strip series, Baldi is shown to be able to eat his planet Earth by growing his head to be large, or it is heavily implied that he can eat the entire universe. However, in the game series, despite Baldi being considered a very powerful entity he has not been shown to eat a planet as large as his Earth.
    • In the original comic strip series, it is most likely that Baldi's archenemy is TimTom. In the game series, Baldi's true archenemy is Null, as he stole his true power which is why he is slightly weakened.
    • The original comic strip Baldi has a family; Susan, and Andrew. In the game series, it is not explicitly stated that this version of Baldi has a family. However, he is heavily implied to have a wife or girlfriend with the same name from the original comic strip series.
  • Baldi's speed actually fluctuates in Plus when compared to the original game, which always has a float value of 75. This is because his speed in Plus is handled by this equation (the following is not an exact translation of the code into the exact equation): Speed = Speed Curve Evaluate((Current Rage) + Base Speed + Extra Rage).
