Balsaad is a river dragon that appears as one of the primary antagonists of the graphic novel Rose, a prequel to the comic series Bone.
Personality[]
Balsaad is a cruel and prideful dragon. He toys with his victims, and often laughs while causing destruction. He is easily enraged, getting frustrated quickly by Rose's retaliation. Prior to his service, Balsaad was stated by the Great Red Dragon to be unhappy and restless. It is implied that he was once a small dragon but his service to the Lord of Lucut allows him to become a huge dragon.
Powers and abilities[]
Despite being a river dragon, Balsaad is capable of breathing fire. He also has the ability to reattach his limbs, including his head. His powers are the most strongest when he is in the river but his healing ability can work against him as without his limbs he cannot heal.
Biography[]
Balsaad first appears in Rose Harvestar's dream, appearing as a small helpless dragon stuck in a river. After Rose saves him, he leads her to cave. Inside the cave is Rose's parents, her sister Briar, and a giant locust.
Balsaad is later seen during Rose's journey to Old Man's Cave. Rose notices that the area she is traveling in is the same area that was in her dream, and finds the same river she saw before, with Balsaad once again in it. This time, however, Balsaad is much larger and no longer stuck. Balsaad claims that his new master has given him "earthly desires", and that he wishes to hoard "gold and virgins". Balsaad also claims that he and his master will enslave the humans, and attempts to capture Rose. Rose is able to escape by cutting off Balsaad's hand, although he is able to reattach it. This causes Balsaad to give up and leave, claiming that there are "other people to enslave".
Balsaad would later attack the town of Oak Bottom. He allowed one rider to go to the Old Man's Cave to get help. In the middle of his rampage, Balsaad leaves to talk to his master. He asks if it is time to perform the ritual and free the locust, to which his master responds that they must wait. His master commands him to return to Oak Bottom and wait for Rose and her dogs, and that he should not let them escape this time. After Balsaad leaves, it is revealed that his master has been Briar Harvestar the whole time, and that she has made a pact with the rat creatures. Rose goes after Balsaad once more and is told by the Red Dragon how to defeat it – at a price. She must take Balsaad to the river where she freed it, kill him, and then kill the next living thing she sees.
After Balsaad has returned to Oak Bottom, he chases a Pawanian warrior named Toby and an Oak Bottom villager named Bill. He would eventually get into another fight with Rose. Although this time Rose was armed with a Pawanian sword. As she leads him to the river, Rose cuts off Balsaad's head. While searching for his head so he can reattach it, Rose is swarmed by locusts and enters a dream. When Rose reawakens, Balsaad has reattached his head and is once again trying to attack her. Eventually they reach the river, where Rose chops Balsaad to pieces. Due to the river's strong current, Balsaad is unable to heal and dies as he is swept away.
