Shoot him in the f--king head!
~ One of the translations of the Bandits' catchphrase.

Bandits (Rus.: Бандиты; Uk.: Бандити) are the secondary antagonists of the Ukrainian FPS Survival Horror franchise S.T.A.L.K.E.R..

The Bandits is a mostly decentralized organization that consist of representatives of the criminal world in the Exclusion Zone. Bandits are one of the most numerous groups in the Zone.

Bandits has been voiced by Grigory German in Russian and Ukrainian versions

History[]

In 2011, Yoga due to his leadership qualities turned Bandits from small gangs and groups of thugs to a fully functional fraction who took a favorable location at Garabge. Yoga's men quickly took over the, mostly abandoned location. They started to demand payment for passage and activities on their territory. The latter primarily affected the local diggers, some of whom were captured and forced to collect artifact for them. However, The fraction found themselves in a difficult situation, when the Garbage became a battlefield between Freedom, from the east, and Duty from the west, using this opportunity, the Loners, under Father Valerian's leadership decided to organize a repulse to the Bandits. In late 2011 and early 2012, Yoga's Gang started to rapidly lose control and eventually collapsed into small gangs

After Freedom left to Army Warehouses, Borov, the former bartender, with part of the former group occupied the old Freedom base on the Old Factory in the Dark Valley, and also sent several bandits to guard the entrance to laboratory X18. What happened to Yoga during all these events is unknown, most likely he was killed or exiled by Borov himself. Not all bandits agreed with such leadership, so many gangs outside the Dark Valley didn't submit him and led their own way of life led by their own "kingpins". Later, Borov was killed by Mechenyj, and the remnants of the gang were destroyed by the military during the sweep of the Dark Valley.

After disabling the Scorcher, stalkers came to new territories in search of artifacts, and with them, the Bandits. The Sultan's Gang established neutrality with the free stalkers in Skadovsk, continuing to rob them during raids and hoping to establish "their own law" on this base, their succuss is fully determinant by the player. Several small gangs led by Jack and Shishak settled in the vicinity of the Jupiter plant, taking stalkers "on the counter" or hostage. Unlike Sultan's Gang, whom would leave Skadovsk if they failed, Jack's and Shishak's Gangs can be destroyed completely

Ranks & Structure[]

Just like the Loners, Bandits is decentralize organization with no leader. However, unlike Loners, Bandits DO have hierarchy, and they usually work in gangs or with someone and not on their own: Kingpin (Rus.: Пахан; Paxán) is the leader of the gang who commends them with an "unspoken rules" that can change according to different situations: Boss (Rus.: Бугор; Bugór) is a high-ranked member that commends bridges within the gang: Bridges (Rus.: Бригада; Brigada) is a squad consisting of numerable thugs.

Membership[]

Bandits can be divided into regular ones and the ones in gang

Trivia[]

  • Despite their role as antagonists, they serve as them only in Shadow Of Chernobyl where fighting them is important to the plot, since killing Borov, their leader is part of the narrative. Although, the player can still make them neutral by joining Freedom
  • The Bandits' catchphrase "Ah noo, cheeki breeki i v damké!" which, outside of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. community has become the stereotype of Gopniks and Soviet/post-Soviet criminals
  • The meaning of the phrase "А ну, чики-брики и в дамки", which the iconic "cheeki breeki" is derived from, is related to the board game of checkers - one of the favorite pastimes of Russian inmates - and is also part of a Russian nursery rhyme.
  • A common misconception of the expression "cheeki breeki" says that it is a crooked pronunciation of "shake it, break it", but the actual phrase itself has two possible and closely related translations:
    • Shoot him in the f--king head: The one used on the page. It relies on the Bandits use of Russian slang. "Чики-брики" is often warped into a vulgar threat of shooting someone while "и в дамки" means "the head" which roughly can be translated as the named phrase
    • One, two, I'm on top: In context of Russian checkers is said when two pieces are stacked to create a "king". Simply put, this phrase expresses that one player has the upper hand over the other, or that the speaker is in control of the situation.
    • It also should be noted that the phrase can have purely cathartic function, that is, to convey excitement or anticipation and therefore serve no other purpose than to display emotion and threaten the enemy much like "F––k yeah!" or "Hell yeah!"
  • In Shadow Of Chernobyl Bandits has 4 additional members:
  • Bandits have become very popular characters in Internet memes.
  • Bandits are one of three groups that use abusive language. The other two are Renegades and Mercenaries.
  • Only in Shadow Of Chernobyl Bandits wear gasmasks.
