~ Bangladesh DuPree to Baron Klaus Wulfenbach (Vol. 6 p. 3). |
Captain Bangladesh DuPree, or Bang for short, is a major antagonist in the print-and-web comic series Girl Genius by Phil & Kaja Foglio. DuPree is introduced as a military commander on the payroll of Baron Klaus Wulfenbach. Cheerfully bloodthirsty, DuPree often finds herself needing to be regulated by the Baron in what she is allowed to do on the battlefield.
Backstory[]
Early Life[]
Bangladesh DuPree was born into a family dealing in piracy. Her mother was a deposed queen who turned to piracy in order to get enough of an army to reclaim her kingdom in the North Sea (as explained in the prose novel Agatha H. and the Airship City). Her father was an airship captain and "professional castaway" who deserted the family.
She inherited her mother's royal title and continued her piracy operation. However, she lost her whole fleet and fortress when some of her servants tried kidnapping Zeetha of Skifander, who was able to slay them all. Bang did not know who destroyed her fleet, and so vowed to find whoever it was to get revenge.
Under Klaus[]
In the aftermath of her fort being destroyed, DuPree made a deal with Baron Klaus Wulfenbach that she would work for him until they found whoever destroyed her fortress (Vol. 19 p. 18). She then became a captain in service to the Wulfenbach Empire.
Under the Baron's orders, as explained in a footnote (#55 to be exact) of Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess, DuPree was sent to Paris to teach Gilgamesh Wulfenbach how to deal with crazy people. DuPree considered these to be "fun times" (Vol. 22 p. 2). At this same time, as a footnote (#111) in Agatha H. and the Siege of Mechanicsburg mentioned, she also kidnapped Tarvek Sturmvoraus at one point an forced him to work on her ship.
Bangladesh DuPree makes her first appearance in the comic via a flashback (Vol. 2 p. 89) of her attacking soldiers of the Duke D'Omas. She first appears in person in a meeting with the Baron (Vol. 3 p. 10), discussing a time-window she saw on the battlefield with Agatha Hetrerodyne, Gilgamesh Wulfenbach, Moloch von Zinzer, and a Geisterdame inside of it.
When Agatha Heterodyne tried to escape Castle Wulfenbach, Bang was tasked with hunting her down. She killed Princess Zulenna in the process and briefly fought Von Pinn. Later, she went with Gilgamesh Wulfenbach to keep searching for Agatha. The two bumped into Master Payne's circus, who tricked them into thinking Agatha was dead. After that, DuPree went with the Baron to Sturmhalten to deal with an infestation of slaver wasps in the city. There, she got into a battle with Agatha and Master Payne's circus, and had her jaw broken trying to escape.
She was taken to the same hospital as the Baron, where her jaw was wired shut, much to his amusement. Gilgamesh tasked her with killing any assassin who tried to attack his father. She eventually had her jaw healed and the bandage removed.
News would get to Castle Wulfenbach that the Baron had supposedly died (Vol. 12 p. 32). DuPree expressed genuine sadness at this news, and Gilgamesh took temporary command in his father's absence. But news would later come that the Baron was actually alive, and Gil suspected that his father was infected with a slaver wasp. Gil then forced Bang to drink an anti-wasp formula developed by Tarvek, whom she did not trust. She had also taken an interest in Captain Vole.
Under Gilgamesh[]
After the siege of Mechanicsburg, Klaus Wulfenbach found himself trapped in a time-bubble, and so Gilgamesh inherited the title of Baron and command of the empire. Bangladesh found herself at the young Baron's side.
During Agatha's escape from Martellus von Blitzengaard, Gil and Bang fought against Martellus (with Bang hoping to make Martellus into her new hat rack). Later, when in a private conversation with Gil, she encountered the "Klaus-in-Gil" overlay for the first time, expressing concern for Gil's current state. Following this, she accompanied Gil to the St. Szpac Depot Fortress, where she met Zeetha for the first time.
Much time after this, Bang and Gil did a rescue operation to save Tarvek Sturmvoraus from assassins sent by Martellus. They did so, and all went to England together for safety.
Retirement[]
While in England, DuPree learned that the person who destroyed her fleet and fortress was Zeetha of Skifander (Vol. 19 p. 11). As per her deal with Klaus, Bang quit her job in service to the Wulfenbachs (Vol. 19 p. 17).
Bangladesh DuPree then met Zeetha in person, though instead of a fight to the death, the two settle for sparring (Vol. 21 p. 73). She also gets a job at the English Privateer Museum (Vol. 21 p. 62) as she no longer works for the Wulfenbachs.
Investigation into the theft of Prende's Lantern led to Agatha and her friends figuring that the thieves went to the Rat Island. They arranged to travel to the island by airship to retrieve the Lantern, with Bangladesh DuPree being one of the people accompanying them. On the way it was discovered that their captain was working against them, so Bang took control of the ship herself. On the island, Bang was reunited with her father and scolded him for leaving the family (Vol. 22 p. 103). Bang and her crew later took part in an island-wide fight involving a God-Queen Lucrezia Mongfish (Clank body), a God-Queen Francisia Monahan, a corrupted Deepdweller, and Queen Albia herself.
Personality[]
Bangladesh DuPree is shown to be casual and upbeat with acts of violence. Her enjoyment of killing is something that Klaus often finds himself needing to keep restrained, which causes Bang in turn to see Klaus as rather boring. The chances to commit wanton acts of violence she is given are practically celebrated by her. When interacting with other empire officials, Bang often makes snide and sarcastic remarks about them.
Despite her love of violence, Bang does have standards. She was genuinely saddened by the news of Klaus' passing (Vol. 12 p. 32). She also considers mind-control to be one of the few moral lines she won't cross (Vol. 21 p. 81).
According to the prose novelization Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess (Chapter 10 to be exact), Gilgamesh said her captain's quarters had a "Debauched Barbarian Princess" look. He meant it as an insult, but once she learned what "debauched" meant, DuPree took it as a compliment. In the same novel (in Chapter 12), Klaus mentally called DuPree an "easily-refuted, public voice of unreason."
